1 Co-production of knowledge and adaptation to water scarcity in developing countries
Dwindling of freshwater resources is a harsh reality of the arid and semi-arid regions of the world and climate change is expected to deteriorate their situation through major reduction of freshwater supplies. Co-production of knowledge, through active negotiation of experts, government and local stakeholders has been used as a strategy to adapt to water scarcity. However, in many developing countries, co-production of knowledge is not common and adaptation efforts rarely reflects the plurality of involved knowledge sources and actors. Given the urgent need of transition towards water-efficient agricultural practices, the Iran’s government applied the knowledge co-production approach and implemented an integrated participatory crop management (IPCM) project in the Bakian village, Fars province. The objectives of this study were to analyze the knowledge coproduction process, identify the factors contributing to adoption of the co-produced knowledge and investigate the corresponding social, economic and environmental impacts. A mixed-method research was conducted comprising a case study on 19 informants selected using purposive sampling and a survey of 150 rice producers selected through systematic random sampling. The results indicated the relevance and pertinence of knowledge co-production in recognizing the real problems of the rice producers and suggesting some potential adaptive strategies. Though a wide range of natural, financial, technical, institutional and structural constraints restricted adoption of the proposed adaptive strategies, application of the co-produced knowledge significantly increased water productivity, ensured higher yields and farm-based sustainable livelihoods, and enhanced resilience of the farm households under water scarcity. Some recommendations and implications are offered to increase adaptation of farm families to water scarcity.

2 GIS-based groundwater potential mapping in Shahroud plain, Iran: A comparison among statistical (bivariate and multivariate), data mining and MCDM approaches
In arid and semi-arid areas, groundwater resource is one of themost importantwater sources by the humankind. Knowledge of groundwater distribution over space, associated flow and basic exploitation measures can play a significant role in planning sustainable development, especially in arid and semi-arid areas. Groundwater potentialmapping (GWPM) fits in this context as the tool used to predict the spatial distribution of groundwater. In this researchwe tested four GIS-basedmodels for GWPM, consisting of: i) randomforest (RF); ii) weight of evidence (WoE); iii) binary logistic regression (BLR); and iv) technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) multi-criteria. The Shahroud plain located in Iran, was selected to research thewater scarcity and overexploitation of groundwater resources over the past 20 years. In this research, using Iranian Department ofWater ResourcesManagement data, and extensive field surveys, 122 groundwaterwell datawith high potential yield of ≥11m3 h−1 were selected for GWPM. Specifically, we generated four different models selecting 70% (n=85) of thewells and validated the resulting GWPmaps upon the complementary 30% (n=37).A total of fifteen ground water conditioning factors to explain the groundwater well distribution over the Shahroud plain were selected. From the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS), a DEM(30mresolution) was extracted to calculate a set of morphometric propertieswhichwere combinedwith thematic ones such as land use/land cover (LU/LC) and Soil Type (ST). Results show that in RF (LU/LC), LR (ST), and AHP (Slope) are the most relevant contributors to groundwater occurrence. After that, using the natural break method, final maps were divided into five susceptibility classes of very low, low, moderate, high, and very high. The accuracy of modelswas ultimately tested using prediction rate (validation data), success rate (training data) and the seed cell area index (SCAI) indicators. Results of validation show that BLR with prediction rate of 0.905 (90.5%) and success rate of 0.918 (91.8%) had higher accuracy than WoE, RF and TOPSIS models with respective prediction rates of 0.885, 0.873 and 0.870 (88.5%, 87.3%, and 87%) and success rate of 0.900, 0.889, and 0.881 (90%, 88.9%, and 88.1%). SCAI results show that all models have acceptable classification accuracy although BLR outperformed the other models in terms of accuracy. Results show that the combination of remote sensing (RS) data and geographic information system (GIS) with new approaches can be used as a powerful tool in GWPM in arid and semi-arid areas. The results of this investigation introduced a potential novel methodology that could be used by decision-makers for the sustainable management of ground water resources.

3 Groundwater spring potential mapping using population-based evolutionary algorithms and data mining methods
Water scarcity inmany regions of theworld has become an unpleasant reality. Groundwater appears to be one of the main natural resources capable to reverse this situation. Uncovering the spatial patterns of groundwater occurrence is a crucial factor that could assist in carrying out successful water resources management projects. The main objective of the current study was to provide a novel methodology approach which utilized Genetic Algorithm( GA) in order to performa feature selection procedure and data mining methods for generating a groundwater spring potential map. Three data mining methods, Naïve Bayes (NB), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and RandomForest (RF) were utilized to construct a groundwater spring potential map that had over 0.81 probability of occurrence for the Wuqi County, Shaanxi Province, China. Groundwater spring locations and sixteen related variables were analyzed, namely: lithology, soil cover, land use cover, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), elevation, slope angle, aspect, planform curvature, profile curvature, curvature, stream power index (SPI), stream transport index (STI), topographic wetness index (TWI), mean annual rainfall, distance from river network and distance from road network. The Frequency ratio method was used to weight the variables, whereas a multi-collinearity analysis was performed to identify the relation between the parameters and to decide about their usage. The optimal set of parameters, which was determined by the GA, reduced the number of parameters into twelve removing planformcurvature, profile curvature, curvature and STI. The Receiver Operating Characteristic curve and the area under the curve (AUROC) were estimated so as to evaluate the predictive power of eachmodel. The results indicated that the optimizedmodels were superior in accuracy than the original models. The optimized RF model produced the best results (0.9572), followed by the optimized SVM (0.9529) and the optimized NB (0.8235). Overall, the current study highlights the necessity of applying feature selection techniques in groundwater spring assessments and also that data miningmethods may be a highly powerful investigation approach for groundwater spring potential mapping.

4 Deep learning approach for sustainable WWTP operation: A case study on data-driven influent conditions monitoring
Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are sustainable solutions to water scarcity. As initial conditions offered to WWTPs, influent conditions (ICs) affect treatment units states, ongoing processes mechanisms, and product qualities. Anomalies in ICs, often raised by abnormal events, need to be monitored and detected promptly to improve system resilience and provide smart environments. This paper proposed and verified data-driven anomaly detection approaches based on deep learning methods and clustering algorithms. Combining both the ability to capture temporal auto-correlation features among multivariate time series from recurrent neural networks (RNNs), and the function to delineate complex distributions from restricted Boltzmann machines (RBM), RNN-RBM models were employed and connected with various classifiers for anomaly detection. The effectiveness of RNN based, RBM based, RNN-RBM based, or standalone individual detectors, including expectation maximization clustering, K-means clustering, mean-shift clustering, one-class support vector machine (OCSVM), spectral clustering, and agglomerative clustering algorithms were evaluated by importing seven years ICs data from a coastal municipal WWTP where more than 150 abnormal events occurred. Results demonstrated that RNN-RBM-based OCSVM approach outperformed all other scenarios with an area under the curve value up to 0.98, which validated the superiority in feature extraction by RNN-RBM, and the robustness in multivariate nonlinear kernels by OCSVM. The model was flexible for not requiring assumptions on data distribution, and could be shared and transferred among environmental data scientists.

5 Producing water scarcity in São Paulo, Brazil: The 2014-2015 water crisis and the binding politics of infrastructure
In 2014 and 2015, political intransigence combined with a severe drought to push São Paulo, Brazil, to the edge of a profound water crisis. In this paper, I consider the response to the crisis on behalf of the state government. I analyze the suite of actions taken to cope with scarcity, focusing specifically on the states employment of pressure reductions in the water pipes as opposed to a formal rationing. I argue that despite the state govern ments claims that only a small minority was going without water, the reality was that water shortages were being felt throughout the city and residents of the urban periphery were being disproportionately impacted. Uneven experiences of scarcity were produced by the combination of existing inequities in citys water infra structure and the differentiated abilities of residents to store water in small-scale reservoirs commonly referred to as caixas d’água. Understanding the co-production of water (in)security in crisis contexts has implications for how we understand the nature of contemporary urban governance and the techno-politics of the contemporary city, and offers insight into scholarship on the political ecologies of the state and the distributed nature of governance. Additionally, it suggests that more research is needed into the critical role played by adaptive technologies of water storage in the hydrosocial cycle.

8 Modern viticulture in southern Europe: Vulnerabilities and strategies for adaptation to water scarcity
Water is now considered the most important but vulnerable resource in the Mediterranean region. Nevertheless, irrigation expanded fast in the region (e.g. South Portugal and Spain) to mitigate environmental stress and to guarantee stable grape yield and quality. Sustainable wine production depends on sustainable water use in the wine’s supply chain, from the vine to the bottle. Better understanding of grapevine stress physiology (e.g. water relations, temperature regulation, water use efficiency), more robust crop monitoring/phenotyping and implementation of best water management practices will help to mitigate climate effects and will enable significant water savings in the vineyard and winery. In this paper, we focused on the major vulnerabilities and opportunities of South European Mediterranean viticulture (e.g. in Portugal and Spain) and present a multi-level strategy (from plant to the consumer) to overcome region’s weaknesses and support strategies for adaptation to water scarcity, promote sustainable water use and minimize the environmental impact of the sector.
