3 A relational account of visual short-term memory (VSTM)
Visual short-term memory (VSTM) is an important resource that allows temporarily storing visual information. Current theories posit that elementary features (e.g., red, green) are encoded and stored independently of each other in VSTM. However, they have difficulty explaining the similarity effect, that similar items can be remembered better than dissimilar items. In Experiment 1, we tested (N ¼ 20) whether the similarity effect may be due to storing items in a context-dependent manner in VSTM (e.g., as the reddest/yellowest item). In line with a relational account of VSTM, we found that the similarity effect is not due to feature similarity, but to an enhanced sensitivity for detecting changes when the relative colour of a to-be-memorised item changes (e.g., from reddest to not-reddest item; than when an item underwent the same change but retained its relative colour; e.g., still reddest). Experiment 2 (N ¼ 20) showed that VSTM load, as indexed by the CDA amplitude in the EEG, was smaller when the colours were ordered so that they all had the same relationship than when the same colours were out-of-order, requiring encoding different relative colours. With this, we report two new effects in VSTM e a relational detection advantage that describes an enhanced sensitivity to relative changes in change detection, and a relational CDA effect, which reflects that VSTM load, as indexed by the CDA, scales with the number of (different) relative features between the memory items. These findings support a relational account of VSTM and question the view that VSTM stores features such as colours independently of each other.

4 Prefrontal cortical alterations of glutamate and GABA neurotransmission in schizophrenia: Insights for rational biomarker development
Certain cognitive deficits in schizophrenia, such as impaired working memory, are thought to reflect alterations in the neural circuitry of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Gamma oscillations in the DLPFC appear to be a neural corollary of working memory function, and the power of these oscillations during working memory tasks is lower in individuals with schizophrenia. Thus, gamma oscillations represent a potentially useful biomarker to index dysfunction in the DLPFC circuitry responsible for working memory in schizophrenia. Postmortem studies, by identifying the cellular basis of DLPFC dysfunction, can help inform the utility of biomarker measures obtained in vivo. Given that gamma oscillations reflect network activity of excitatory pyramidal neurons and inhibitory GABA neurons, we review postmortem findings of alterations to both cell types in the DLPFC and discuss how these findings might inform future biomarker development and use.

5 Modal-independent Pattern Recognition Deficit in Developmental Dyscalculia Adults: Evidence from Tactile and Visual Enumeration
Developmental dyscalculia (DD) is characterized by lower numerical and finger-related skills. Studies of enumeration among those DD that suggested core deficiency in pattern recognition, working memory or/and attention were mostly carried out in the visual modality. In our study, we examined visual (dots) enumeration of 1–10 stimuli and tactile (vibration) enumeration of 1–10 fingers among DD and matched-control adults. We used 800-ms stimuli exposure time of either random/non-neighboring or canonical/neighboring stimuli arrangements (visual/tactile). Compared to controls, those with DD responded faster in visual random enumeration and did not differ in reaction time (RT) of canonical stimuli arrangements. However, while the control group had near perfect accuracy in random stimuli arrangements of up to five stimuli, DD participants performed accurately for only up to four stimuli, and they were less accurate in the canonical stimuli arrangements in the counting range. In the tactile task, DD participants showed less accurate tactile enumeration only for neighboring arrangements, more profoundly for finger counting (FC) patterns. The longer exposure time in the visual task enabled us to explore pattern recognition effects when working memory and attention loads were low. We discuss possible modalindependent deficits in pattern recognition and working memory on enumeration performance among those with DD and the unique role of fingers in ordinal and cardinal representation of numbers.

6 Learning symbols from permanent and transient visual presentations: Dont overplay the hand
Instructional dynamic pictures (animations and videos) contain transient visual information. Consequently, when learning from dynamic pictures, students must process in working memory the current images while trying to remember the images that left the screen. This additional activity in working memory may lead dynamic pictures to be less suitable instructional materials than comparable static pictures, which are more permanent. In order to directly show the influence of transient visual information on dynamic learning environments, we designed a well-matched comparison between a permanent and a transient presentation of an abstract-symbol memory task on the computer. In the task, 104 university students (50% females) had to memorize the type, color, and position of the symbols in a rectangular configuration. In addition, an embodied cognition factor was included where the symbols in the task were either shown with a precision grasping static hand or not. We also assessed how individual characteristics (spatial ability, spatial memory span, and gender) influenced performance. Results showed that (a) permanent outperformed transient presentations, (b) observing hands hindered learning, and (c) high spatial ability and high spatial memory span were beneficial, but gender did not affect performance.

7 Working memory and the Big Five
Previous studies that have investigated associations between working memory (WM) and the Big Five person ality traits have yielded mixed results, with some finding statistically significant associations while others have not. The aim of the current study was twofold. First, we systematically reviewed previous studies on WM-Big Five associations. Second, we investigated associations between three WM composites (numerical-verbal WM, visuospatial WM, n-back) and the Big Five in a large-scale study on adults (n = 503). Here we controlled for possible confounding caused by the way WM is operationalized, the content domain of the WM tasks (verbal vs. spatial), and sample size. The systematic review revealed that the majority of earlier studies show no association between any of the personality traits and WM performance. As regards our empirical study, the only significant associations were the negative correlations between n-back WM updating performance and the Conscientiousness and Openness traits. This means that the more Conscientious or Open to experiences a par ticipant reported being, the worse was the n-back performance. Overall, our study failed to show any robust relationships between WM performance and the Big Five personality traits. We discuss possible reasons for these findings.

9 Pathways to reading, mathematics, and science: Examining domain-general correlates in young Chinese children
Early competencies in reading, mathematics, and science are associated with later school achievement and adulthood socioeconomic status. This cross-sectional study examined how fundamental domain-general capa cities, including language, spatial, and self-regulatory skills, together relate to competencies in reading, mathematics, and science in young Chinese children. A total of 584 Chinese children aged approximately six years were tested individually on their language (receptive vocabulary), spatial (spatial perception, spatial vi sualization, and mental rotation), and self-regulation (behavioral regulation and working memory) skills, as well as their academic competencies in reading, mathematics, and science. The results showed that vocabulary, spatial, and self-regulatory skills were all associated with Chinese reading, mathematics, and life sciences, whereas only vocabulary was related to earth and physical sciences. The relation between vocabulary and formal mathematics and that between mental rotation and life sciences were found to be stronger in boys than in girls. The findings suggest that foundational domain-general skills may provide the building blocks for children’s academic competencies.

10 Discovery of resources using MADM approaches for parallel and distributed computing
Grid, a form of parallel and distributed computing, allows the sharing of data and computational resources among its users from various geographical locations. The grid resources are diverse in terms of their underlying attributes. The majority of the state-of-the-art resource discovery techniques rely on the static resource attributes during resource selection. However, the matching resources based on the static resource attributes may not be the most appropriate resources for the execution of user appli cations because they may have heavy job loads, less storage space or less working memory (RAM). Hence, there is a need to consider the current state of the resources in order to find the most suitable resources. In this paper, we have proposed a two-phased multi-attribute decision making (MADM) approach for dis covery of grid resources by using P2P formalism. The proposed approach considers multiple resource attributes for decision making of resource selection and provides the best suitable resource(s) to grid users. The first phase describes a mechanism to discover all matching resources and applies SAW method to shortlist the top ranked resources, which are communicated to the requesting super-peer. The second phase of our proposed methodology applies integrated MADM approach (AHP enriched PROMETHEE-II) on the list of selected resources received from different super-peers. The pairwise comparison of the resources with respect to their attributes is made and the rank of each resource is determined. The top ranked resource is then communicated to the grid user by the grid scheduler. Our proposed methodology enables the grid scheduler to allocate the most suitable resource to the user application and also reduces the search complexity by filtering out the less suitable resources during resource discovery.
