1 Critical thinking in accounting education: Status and call to action
For many years, accounting education research has highlighted the need for students to develop stronger critical thinking skills. This need has become even more imperative as the accounting profession continues to transition, and entry-level accountants are expected to demonstrate stronger critical thinking skills earlier in their careers. In this paper, we revisit the higher education literature to identify key recommendations for accounting education to simultaneously develop desired critical thinking skills and accounting technical knowledge. Based on existing research in higher education, we recommend that accounting educators apply a model of cognitive development—the reflective judgment model—to better understand students’ thinking and to design and employ more effective learning activities. To encourage adoption of this approach, we summarize existing accounting education recommendations for improved critical thinking education. Although we believe that these recommendations are beneficial, we recognize that only limited accounting education research supports the ideas presented here. Accordingly, we propose calls to action for additional research in this area. Our students need for us to identify and adopt educational practices to generate graduates who have the critical thinking skills required by our rapidly-changing profession. To meet this need, researchers should actively engage in activities to fill the gap in empirical data about the development of students’ critical thinking skills throughout the accounting curriculum. Also, accounting departments and faculty need to support both educational research and improved learning design.

2 The potential of simulations for developing multiple learning outcomes: The student perspective
One of the main challenges for higher education study plans in business, management and economics is to go beyond traditional teaching models to foster skills development, and to de- velop interdisciplinary approaches to enhance education for sustainable development. This ar- ticle presents an innovative classroom activity for advancing multiple learning outcomes in economics courses, and measures student perceptions about how useful simulations can be to develop these key learning outcomes. It consists of a simulation in which students represent different countries and carry out international exchanges to implement a set of public policies, attempting to improve their overall social and economic performance through the lens of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. Overall, the findings suggest that students perceived the simulation as a very productive tool to develop multiple learning outcomes. They considered it particularly useful with regard to improving their knowledge acquisition, problem solving, critical thinking and interpersonal skills. They also stated that role-play activities are an effective way to enhance affective-learning outcomes. This simulation is suitable to be implemented in different economics courses, such as international political economy, international economics and other regional economics courses. It could also be adapted to several classroom settings with groups of different sizes.

3 Assessing the authenticity of cases, internships and problem-based learning as managerial learning experiences: Concepts, methods and lessons for practice
It has been long argued that business education must transform itself to support students’ acquisition of twenty-first-century competencies, such as critical thinking, effective communication, and collaborative problem-solving. Recognising the limitations of the lecture model in fostering these competencies, scholars favour approaches that integrate theory with practice. However, the question of how to best introduce practice in the business curriculum remains unanswered. Are some methods for doing so better than others? This paper contributes to this discussion by analysing the three most common approaches currently used to introduce practice in the business curriculum: the case method, internships, and problem-based learning (PBL). Each of these methods is examined in relation to how it incorporates what scholars identify as the four building blocks of a management learning epistemology: (1) ill-defined problems where students(2) execute solutions in real-life (3) in close collaboration with a real organisation, with learning(4) supported by a process of reflection. Based on this appraisal, this paper suggests that none of these popular approaches adequately incorporate the four blocks, but PBL is the approach best suited to adaptation. An adapted version of PBL that incorporates these four building blocks is presented and illustrated with two real-life examples.

4 Community health education re-envisioned: The value of partnership with the local food bank
Baccalaureate-prepared nurses must be prepared to fulfill expanding role and skill expectations in community settings to improve population health. The use of non-traditional community clinical sites provides opportunities for students to learn and use a broad skill set such as leadership, communication, research, teaching, project management, and critical thinking. Students explore utilization of epidemiological systems and nursing theories to assist groups and communities to meet their nursing and community health needs. An example of a successful non-traditional partnership was established between our school and the regional food bank. This symbiotic relationship provides two-way benefits: students are afforded some flexibility and creativity in completion of required course assignments, and the food bank gains additional workers to help accomplish their strategic goals. It is a community health clinical resource that is accessible to schools of nursing in every community.

5 Graduate students mentoring undergraduate students’ business innovation pitches
Pitch competitions are commonplace throughout undergraduate and graduate entrepreneurship curricula. Although they are valuable exercises, advancements are available to further their usefulness and reach a wider audience. Accordingly, we developed an experiential learning ex- ercise rooted in the tenets of corporate entrepreneurship that allows for greater collaboration, learning, and critical thinking. In the exercise, undergraduate student groups develop and present an innovative initiative, then are scored and mentored by MBA student groups prior to the final pitches. The benefits include improved student learning by undergraduate students from grad- uate student mentors as well as improved mentoring and leadership skills for graduate students through the practical and experiential process of helping undergraduate students improve their pitches.

7 Towards a responsible entrepreneurship education and the future of the workforce
This article explores how entrepreneurship education (EE) could be adopted towards improving graduates skills and preparing the future workforce. It adopts interviews with 30 experienced higher education academics, executives of employment and work placement agencies in Nigeria that reveals substantial benefits of adopting entrepreneurial pedagogics, critical thinking and problem-based learning (PBL). The critical question is how can EE practices be utilised in higher education to improve future workforce? Linked to the UN Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME), this study is based on the model of curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular learning pipeline that focuses on ‘learning in the curriculum’ and ‘learning beyond the curriculum’. The model somehow links to the six domains that formed our analytical model – knowledge and cognitive learning, innovation in teaching pedagogy, change in thinking, change in attitudes, social learning and change in action.

8 Trends and research issues of mobile learning studies in nursing education: A review of academic publications from 1971 to 2016
In the past decades, the issues related to mobile learning have been widely discussed around the globe; however, the development and trends of applying mobile technologies in nursing education still lack systematic analysis. In this study, a meta review of the studies published in academic journals from 1971 to 2016 was conducted to analyze the application domains, subjects, adopted learning strategies, investigated research issues and findings of mobile technology-supported nursing education. From the review results, it was found that the use of mobile technologies in nursing education and training have made great progress in the past decades. In addition to the changes in mobile technologies and the increasing number of mobile learning studies in nursing education, the subjects and research issues have also become more diverse in recent years. It was also found that mobile learning has mainly been applied to the training of basic nursing concepts and skills as well as to long-term care and obstetrics and gynecology, while few or even no studies are related to other nursing education domains. In addition, several widely adopted mobile learning strategies, such as inquiry-based learning, contextual mobile learning, snychronous sharing, Mindtools, project-based learning and peer assessment, have seldom been adopted in mobile nursing education. This also reflects the fact that most of these studies focused on skills training and basic knowledge comprehension, while few were conducted in the domains aimed at fostering learners higher order thinking competences, such as problem solving or critical thinking. On the other hand, it was found that the number of studies using an experimental design has increased in recent years; moreover, most studies reported the learners’ cognitive performance and perceptions, while their learning behaviors were seldom analyzed. Accordingly, the research trends and potential research issues of mobile nursing education are proposed as a reference for researchers, instructors and policy makers.

9 Domains and predictors of first-year student success: A systematic review
The predictors of first-year student success received much attention in educational practice and theory. However, first-year student success can be defined in various ways. By studying different theoretical research strands, we developed a conceptual framework consisting of three domains of first-year student success, namely students academic achievement, critical thinking skills, and social-emotional well-being. The goal of this systematic literature review was to illustrate whether the predictors and their effects are similar and/or different across these three domains of first-year student success. A systematic search yielded 80 articles that were eligible. The results indicated that some predictors contributed to multiple domains of success, namely students’ previous academic performance, study skills, motivation, social relationships, and participation in first-year programs. Further, some predictors were typical for a specific domain. Academic achievement and social-emotional well-being were particularly related to factors within the student, whereas critical thinking skills were more related to the learning environment.
