1 Is the Internet of Things a helpful employee? An exploratory study of discourses of Canadian farmers
The increasing global population and the growing demand for high-quality products have called for the modernization of agriculture. “Internet of Things” is one of the technologies that is pre- dicted to offer many solutions. We conducted a discourse analysis of 19 interviews with farmers in Ontario, Canada, asking them to describe their experience of working with IoT and related technologies. One main discourse with two opposing tendencies was identified: farmers recognize their relationship with IoT and related technology and view technology as a kind of “employee”, but some tend to emphasize (1) an optimistic view which is discourse of technology is a “Helpful Employee”; while others tend to emphasize (2) a pessimistic view which is a discourse of tech- nology is an “Untrustworthy Employee”. We examine these tendencies in the light of the literature on organizational behavior and identify potential outcomes of these beliefs. The results suggest that a farmer’s style of approaching technology can be assessed on a similar scale as managers’ view of their employees and provide a framework for further research.

2 Beyond intentionality in accounting regulation: Habitual strategizing by the IASB
Adopting critical discourse analysis and Bourdieu’s theorization of dispositional use of language, the present study challenges a common assumption in the accounting standard-setting literature, namely, that regulators’ discourse is purposely and deliberately deployed. I draw on cognitive sociolinguistics to empirically explore the specific manifestations of habitual, that is, pre-reflexive legitimation rhetoric in IASB regulatory texts. My analysis shows how taken-for-granted discursive rationalizations and linguistic forms are operationalized. I then argue that the language observed in regulatory texts, which can be considered as examples of ‘collective thinking artefacts’, enacts standard setters’ institutionalized patterns of reasoning associated with their social position. This critical perspective on the subconscious use of rhetoric generates a series of further questions regarding the lack of reflexivity in accounting regulatory processes.

3 Discourses of exclusion on Twitter in the Turkish Context: #ülkemdesuriyeliistemiyorum (#idontwantsyriansinmycountry)
The new communicative affordances of online spaces have transformed the ways and domains we build and negotiate meaning. At the same time, they have introduced diverse channels to produce and disseminate animosity. This article explores online discourses as new communicative environments characterized by their unique textual and semiotic features to unfold the discursive constructions of hate and hostility towards Syrian refugees in Turkey. Building on the principles of the Social Media Critical Discourse Studies (SM-CDS) framework proposed by KhosraviNik (2018) and the Discourse-Historical Approach (DHA) by Reisigl and Wodak (2001), the study analyzes a subset of tweets that includes the hashtag #ülkemdesuriyeliistemiyorum (#idontwantsyriansinmycountry) to understand its functions in constructing and proliferating an exclusionary discourse against refugees. The study focuses on referential, argumentation and intensification strategies used in tweets as well as their wider socio-political implications. The results reveal that refugees in Turkey are delineated as threats, invaders, criminals and potential dangers by the users of online media. It is further observed that a sharper rhetoric and a more intense negative-other representation emerge in Twitter as an online public space compared to print media discourses. While scrutinizing the (re)construction and representation of refugees, our analysis has also uncovered that hate and hostility discourses towards refugees constantly operate to build a collective nationalist identity. This interlocking relationship between constructing refugees through stereotypical attributes as a homogeneously dangerous group and forming a collective Turkish identity is manifested at each level of our analysis

4 Corporate entrepreneurship education’s impact on family business sustainability: A case study in Brazil
Family businesses display distinctive characteristics as compared with non-family companies, and family firms are of great importance to the global economy, which means that more research is needed on how to promote their growth and sustainability. Despite the prevalence of family business, they still need to actively engage in corporate entrepreneurship education in order to stay competitive. This study sought to analyze the effects of corporate entrepreneurship education on a Brazilian family business and to confirm whether company’s investment in corporate entrepreneurship education has, over time, promoted competitive advantages, ensured sustain-ability, and facilitated a carefully planned succession process. The methodology was an exploratory-descriptive case study based on qualitative data based on individual’s perceptions then subjected to discourse analysis. The data were gathered from interviews with the top management of the family firm under study in order to understand their perceptions of corporate entrepreneurship education. The results reveal that the company presents the expected family business characteristics and that the firm’s investment in corporate entrepreneurship education has ensured its growth and sustainability and facilitated a smoother succession process. These findings indicate that the perception regarding investment in corporate entrepreneurship education contributing to family businesses’ sustainability is generally positive. Based on the pre- vailing theories, these firms are extremely likely to cease to exist from the third generation onward often due to successors’ lack of professional skills and the predominance of hiring based on relationships rather than qualifications. This study’s results provide empirical evidence of how investing in corporate entrepreneurship education adds value to family businesses.

5 A critical content analysis of media reporting on opioids: The social construction of an epidemic
Background: The 2000s have seen a proliferation of media reporting about opioid use in North America. Given the significant role that popular media plays in shaping the publics perceptions and understandings of the issues that it represents, analysing the content of this media coverage can help understand public discourse about opioid use. Methods: We conducted a critical content analysis of Canadian newsprint media reporting on opioids using a sociological lens. We performed a qualitative thematic analysis of these texts, coding 826 articles and applying a critical discourse analysis in our interpretation of the findings. Findings: Our analysis showed a slow transition from a conversation primarily about clinical pain care towards a discussion of criminality, especially the increasingly fluidity of boundaries between prescription opioid use and the illegal drug trade. Patients tend to be dichotomized as either innocently following physician prescriptions or drug-seeking, as an aspect of lives characterized by addiction and street crime. These depictions map onto characterizations of physicians as naively following pharmaceutical industry advice or becoming irrelevant once criminality is introduced. Discussion: The social construction of the opioid epidemic polarizes individuals as good or bad with little attention paid to underlying institutional interests both in the creation of the problem or in the solutions that are proposed. We show that as concerns about harms from opioids become more pronounced, the narrative shifts to home in on illicit street-use with a corresponding uptake of stigmatizing references to so-called addicts. Concurrently, most references to the pharmaceutical industry disappear from view. This framing of the problem defines the kinds of solutions that then seem natural. For example, increased criminalization is suggested for people who use drugs and stigmatizing those who suffer with chronic pain becomes a higher priority than implementing safer and more effective therapies for managing their pain.

6 The paradox of border security – an example from the UK
The study of borders has experienced a renaissance in various disciplines, but the concept of vernacular security in the field of borders and the politics that surround them has been neglected. This article uses a people approach and examines the perceptions and understandings of the UK civil society and ‘their’ state border. Using the example of the UK is particularly interesting because governments have invested high efforts into constructing a more stringent, efficient and secure UK border for decades. As consequence, the concept of border has gained a raised public profile in the UK, which questions security perceptions by members of the UK civil society and what the UK border means to them. Drawing on a variety of empirical data and employing critical discourse analysis, this article will show an ambiguous and paradoxical picture of the UK border instead of its usually assumed monolithic symbolism of security and protection. The article shows that there is a mismatch present in border politics: security is aimed at however insecurity is generated. This mismatch and confusion among members of the UK civil society have further political and societal consequences. Borders and bordering effectively insecuritize people by which, as the article argues, the concept of vernacular security moves tothe forefront of new theorizations of the relationship between borders, security and politics.

7 News from the pit: Journalistic performativity and discourse on Belgian internment policy
This contribution examines the ways in which newspapers open or close mediated debate on the Belgian internment issue, and whether this can be connected to different journalistic practices. Although human rights guarantees are often articulated as a matter of near-universal consensus, Belgium has been convicted 23 times by the European Court for Human Rights for its treatment of mentally disabled criminal offenders. Considering news media’s central role in shaping debate on human rights issues, we study internment news in two Dutch-language newspapers between 2013 and 2015 using critical discourse analysis. Our research shows that studying media as a site of struggle enables a deeper understanding of how debate is opened or closed, and explores the possibilities of studying discursive strategies that shape the mediated debate together with practices that reinforce journalistic credibility

8 Media representation of digital-free tourism: A critical discourse analysis
Digital-free tourism (DFT) describes tourism spaces where internet and mobile signals are either absent or digital technology usage is controlled. By employing critical discourse analysis of over 450 media texts produced between 2009 and 2017, the study reported the conceptual understanding of DFT, the ways the media representation has changed over time and explored the broad social context and debates in which the concept is embedded. By reading and reviewing the texts, unsupervised (automatic) Leximancer analysis, and manual coding, a shift in the representation of the concept was established. Initially framed simply as a reaction to the pressures of abundant connectivity in the years 2009–2015, recently the possibility for human flourishing, well-being and an enhanced lifestyle have emerged. Holiday making in a digital-free environment is intimately linked to the ways individuals can manage their contemporary relationships and experiences rather than be controlled by the technologies others have created.

9 “It was kind of a given that we were all multilingual”: Transnational youth identity work in digital translanguaging
"این یک نوعی تصور است که ما همگی چند زبانه هستیم": هویت کاری جوانان چند ملیتی در ترا زبانی دیجیتال-2018
Drawing from the framework of translanguaging, this case study counters the notion of separatism in ones multilingual competency as developing separate monolingual capacities in different languages. Building from definitions and integration of theories from translanguaging and digital literacies in the context of transnational connectivity, and using the methodological tools of discourse analysis, this ethnographic case study examined how the case youth drew upon her entire semiotic repertoire in digital spaces to materialize relationships and identities across her local and transnational social fields. Specifically, analyses of the three translanguaging examples demonstrate how the youth progressively expanded her translanguaging scope across contexts of classroom, transnational family, and multilingual youth community, endorsing how the translanguaging approach affords a more comprehensive look into the transnational youths literacy development and identity work.

10 Conceptualizations of Big Data and their epistemological claims in healthcare: A discourse analysis
In recent years, the healthcare field welcomed an emerging field of practices captured under the umbrella term ‘Big Data’. This term is surrounded with positive rhetoric and promises about the ability to analyse real-world data quickly and comprehensively. Such rhetoric is highly consequential in shaping debates on Big Data. While the fields of Science and Technology Studies and Critical Data Studies have been instrumental in elaborating the neglected and problematic dimensions of Big Data, it remains an open question how and to what extent such insights become embedded in other fields. In this paper, we analyse the epistemological claims that accompany Big Data in the healthcare domain. We systematically searched scientific literature and selected 206 editorials as these reflect on developments in the domain. Through an interpretive analysis, we construct five ideal-typical discourses that all frame Big Data in specific ways. Three of the discourses (the modernist, instrumentalist and pragmatist) frame Big Data in positive terms and disseminate a compelling rhetoric. Metaphors of ‘capturing’, ‘illuminating’ and ‘harnessing’ data presume that Big Data are benign and leading to valid knowledge. The scientist and critical-interpretive discourses question the objectivity and effectivity claims of Big Data. Metaphors of ‘selecting’ and ‘constructing’ data illustrate another political message, framing Big Data as limited. We conclude that work in the critical-interpretive discourse has not broadly infiltrated the medical domain. Ways to better integrate aspects of the discourse in the healthcare domain are urgently needed.
