1 Accounting-based downside risk and stock price crash risk: Evidence from China
In the past 15 years, an emerging literature has extensively studied individual stock price crash risk, which refers to the likelihood of an abrupt and large-scale drop in stock prices (e.g., Chen et al., 2001; Hutton et al., 2009; Jin and Myers 2006; Kim et al., 2011a, Li and Zhang 2011b; Kim and Zhang 2016). An important strand of this literature focuses on the Chinese emerging markets where, arguably, the extent of “bad news hoarding” is severer compared to developed markets due to China’s less effective corporate governance environment (Wang et al., 2020). In this paper, we examine the relationship between accounting-based downside risk and stock price crash risk using a large sample of Chinese listed firms. The contribution of this study lies in a recently developed indicator of earnings fundamentals that is, arguably, more consistent with “bad news hoarding”: accounting-based downside risk, hereafter denoted as ABDR. Studies have shown that investors care more about downside losses than upside gain potentials and are therefore more sensitive to losses than to gains (e.g., Gul 1991; Kahneman and Tversky 1979). Accordingly, Koonce et al. (2005) show that economic agents judge negative and positive expectations differently in risk management, placing more emphasis on potential loss outcomes. However, earnings volatility and other existing accounting-based downside risk measures consist of both downside and upside variabilities with equal weights and little research has examined the downside risk of accounting-based measures. Konchitchki et al. (2016) are the first to construct measures of accounting-based downside risk and examine its pricing implications in U.S. markets. In particular, this study uses the relative root lower partial moment as a mathematical foundation to capture exposure to downside risk rather than the overall volatility. Accounting-based downside risk measures focus on the below-expectation variability in firm performance measures, particularly return-on-assets (ROA). We extend Konchitchki et al. (2016) by performing an investigation in the Chinese markets. Furthermore, we examine the variation

3 Supply chain leadership and firm performance: A meta-analysis
The effect of transformational vis-`a-vis transactional supply chain leadership on firm performance has been studied in the existing literature, but results remain mixed. Therefore, it is important to provide a meta-analysis literature review to investigate this relationship. In this study, 32 empirical journal articles published over the past 10 years have been reviewed and evaluated through a meta-analysis. The results reveal that supply chain leadership is positively related to firm performance; specifically, transformational supply chain leadership has a more significant influence than transactional supply chain leadership on firm performance. Further, the effect of leadership varies according to region, industry and performance type. This study provides the first meta-analysis on this relationship.

4 Portfolio effects of knowledge management strategies on firm performance: Complementarity or substitutability?
To investigate the mutual effects of knowledge management (KM) strategies on firm performance, we categorize the portfolios of KM strategies into four patterns: unrelated (scope- and type-based), related, extended, and high diversity portfolios. An inverted U-shaped relationship of KM diversity and firm performance is proposed across the portfolios based on the underlying cost–benefit tradeoffs. Supermodularity test results indicate that strategies of unrelated diversity portfolios show substitutable effects, whereas strategies of related diversity portfolios have complementary effects on firm performance. While strategies of extended diversity portfolios exhibit mixed re- sults with complementary and substitutable effects, strategies of high diversity portfolio exhibit a substitutable effect. Our findings indicate that multiple KM strategies, as a firm’s portfolio, mutually generate complemen- tarities or cause substitutabilities in improving firm performance. We also discuss practical implications for managerial decisions on successful KM.

5 Valuing Supply Chain Performance Within and Across Manufacturing Industries: A DEA-based Approach
Journal Pre-proof Managers often use financial metrics based on internal accounting data to gauge firm performance. In this paper, we analyze firm value and related levers of operational supply chain (SC) performance from a financial market perspective. This allows us to study the contributions of profitability (earns) and asset utilization (turns) as the two major drivers of firm value. For this purpose, we apply data envelopment analysis to a large-scale longitudinal dataset of listed US companies (2007–2015) that covers 13 manufacturing industries. In so doing, we shed light on the implications of the 2008/2009 financial crisis for operational SC performance. Our findings can be summarized as follows: First, earns and turns are negatively correlated from an internal accounting-based viewpoint that distinguishes ‘high earns/low turns’ from ‘low earns/high turns’ industries. Second, manufacturing com-∗Phone +49-7131-645636-826, fax +49-7131-645636-27Email addresses: gerd.hahn@ggs.de (G.J. Hahn),marcus.brandenburg@hs-flensburg.de (M. Finally, we observe declining efficacy of approaches to value- based supply chain management in manufacturing industries since 2007 (the last year before the financial crisis). General firm value appreciation in the stock markets overcompensated for this decline until 2015.

6 Past, present, and future of knowledge management for business sustainability
Knowledge management has gained increasing importance and immense research interest for its promise in advancing sustainability. Despite its proliferation in the literature, little is known about the research profile of knowledge management research intertwined with sustainability. Given this gap, this article aims to conduct an extensive review of knowledge management for sustainability research. Using bibliometrics, which is suitable for large-scale reviews, this article reviews 1136 documents published in peer-reviewed journals indexed in the Web of Science between 2001 and 2021. Noteworthily, the review sheds light on the performance of research con- stituents (e.g., most prolific authors, countries, institutions, and journals), as well as the themes and topics underpinning the intellectual structure (i.e., knowledge foundation, knowledge creation) in the field. Specif- ically, the review reveals that knowledge management for sustainability research has relied on nine foundational clusters (i.e., informed sustainability practice, social network, firm performance, knowledge sharing culture, green innovation, sustainability assessment framework, global warming, knowledge management, and innova- tive performance) to generate new knowledge across 10 thematic clusters, (i.e., ecological knowledge, green innovation, the Shanghai Hongqiao district effect, the Agroscope Research Master Plan, food security, sustainable supply chain management, business sustainability, knowledge creation, knowledge management, and technology management). The article concludes with a new theory that encapsulates extant understanding of knowledge management for sustainability along with promising avenues for future research.

8 Social entrepreneurship orientation and company success: The mediating role of social performance
We examine the impact of social entrepreneurship orientation (SEO), a behavioral measure of the social en- trepreneurship of the organization, on the social and financial performance of a sample of Austrian firms. Despite growing research interests in social entrepreneurship, the field remains fragmented and this has led to calls for a careful examination of the implications of social entrepreneurship for firms. We draw on stakeholder theory and hybrid organizing to hypothesize that social performance mediates the SEO-financial performance relationship. By analyzing a sample of 1,156 companies, we find that the SEO-financial performance relationship is partially positively mediated by social performance even though the direct effect is negative. Our results show that social performance compensates for the otherwise negative effect SEO has directly with financial performance. We contribute to an understanding of the mechanisms by which an SEO affects firm performance and provide richer insights into the various aspects of performance. We discuss the future implications of our study and suggest promising avenues for further research on the SEO construct.

9 Staggered boards, unequal voting rights, poison pills and innovation intensity: New evidence from the Asian markets
This study examines the impact of staggered boards, poison pills and unequal voting rights on corporate innovation intensity using a sample of listed firms in six Asian countries from 2010 to 2017. We analyze the differential effects of antitakeover provisions using the high order fixed effects panel data model that controls for firm fixed effects, industry-year fixed effects and country-year fixed effects. The propensity score matching is used to deal with possible endogeneity issues. This paper provides evidence that staggered boards impede R&D investments. In contrast we show that unequal voting rights and poison pill provisions have no significant effect on long term R&D investments. We also find that a combination of a staggered board and a poison pill provision discourages innovation investments. This study uncovers an economic mechanism on the differential effects of antitakeover provisions on R&D responsiveness to firm investment sets. Staggered boards decrease the sensitivity of R&D to the investment opportunity set, resulting to higher innovative inefficiency. The managerial moral hazard effect of staggered boards disproportionately contributes to low firm performance in innovative firms. This study provides evidence on the source of the efficiency loss from staggered boards by pointing to its governance role in promoting more inefficient allocation of R&D capital.

10 The questions we ask: Opportunities and challenges for using big data analytics to strategically manage human capital resources
Big data analytics have transformed research in many fields, including the business areas of marketing, accounting and finance, and supply chain management. Yet, the discussion surrounding big data analytics in human resource management has primarily focused on job candidate screenings. In this article, we consider how significant strategic human capital questions can be addressed with big data analytics, enabling HR to enhance overall firm performance. We also examine how new data sources that help assess workforce performance in real time can assist in the identification and development of the knowledge stars that contribute to firm performance disproportionately as well as help reinforce firm capabilities. But in order for big data analytics to be successful in the HR field, regulatory and ethical challenges must also be addressed; these include privacy concerns and, in Europe, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). We conclude by discussing how big data analytics can facilitate strategic change within HR and the organization as a whole.
