1 Second law analysis on performance of double stage reciprocating air compressor with inter cooler

Nowadays compressors are playing a major role in many processing industries, manufacturing industries and power sector. At many cases, the compressors are the ultimate comprehensive one on energy consumption in industries. The major grievance of the compression process is heating effect of air compression process which leads to ineffective compression and constant air supply. Many researchers are showing interest to increase the performance of air compressors. Optimizing the suitable designs, working parameters and fluid properties are the three main ways for improving the performance of air compressors. Energy and second law efficiency analysis are the necessary one to recognize the important of energy consumption and conservation. For analysing the performance of the air compressor it is mandatory to measure the working parameters such as pressure, temperature, mass flow rate of air, speed of the compressor and electrical input power. Since the measurementation and instrumentation is playing a vital influence on the performance of air compressor. Therefore investigating the error on instrumentation and its influence on performance of air compressor is compulsory to regulate the eminence of experimental set-up. And these error factors will designate the effect of the uncertainty cause on the performance of air compressor. Uncertainties are significant in all experimental dealings and must be measured throughout the various points of an experimental analysis. In this research work, a study on energy, second law uncertainty efficiency and analysis were done in a double stage reciprocating air compressor with inter cooler setup which is located in Sathyamangalam, Tamilnadu, India. Based on the local ambient conditions and required output for various applications were taken for this performance analysis of double stage reciprocating air compressor with inter cooler. The discharge pressure from the double stage compression is varied from 3 bar to 7 bar. For the corresponding output pressure, first law and second law efficiency of the system was calculated. For the fixed mass flow rate of air the calculated first law efficiency of the system varies from 38% to 64% and second law efficiency of the system varies from 57% to 67%. For the corresponding pressure ratios the uncertainty on the performance of air compressor based on the first law and second law analysis were mathematically modelled. Based on the model the uncertainty on the performance of compressor were found for the error of 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4%, 0.5%, 1%, 2% in all the instruments and it was discussed in the result.

2 Runtime verification for business processes utilizing the Bitcoin blockchain

The usage of process choreographies and decentralized Business Process Management Systems has been named as an alternative to centralized business process orchestration. In choreographies, control over a process instance is shared between independent parties, and no party has full control or knowledge during process runtime. Nevertheless, it is necessary to monitor and verify process instances during runtime for purposes of documentation, accounting, or compensation.To achieve business process runtime verification, this work explores the suitability of the Bitcoin blockchain to create a novel solution for choreographies. The resulting approach is realized in a fully- functional software prototype. This software solution is evaluated in a qualitative comparison. Findings show that our blockchain-based approach enables a seamless execution monitoring and verification of choreographies, while at the same time preserving anonymity and independence of the process participants. Furthermore, the prototype is evaluated in a performance analysis.© 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

3 Establishing competitive intelligence process elements in sport performance analysis and coaching: A comparative systematic literature review

Sport performance analysts and coaches collect and convert competitor and environmental information for strategic decision making. However, existing studies do not provide a systematic approach for this managerial process. Within the business domain, competitive intelligence (CI) is a proven systematic process, which is applied to enhance organizations’ competitiveness through the systematic collection, conversion and countering of information. Therefore, the objective of this comparative systematic literature review (SLR) was to establish similarities between the business CI elements and sport performance analysis (PA). The review was conducted from the functionalist quadrant, to provide rational explanations where mechanical analogies from the business CI domain were used for modelling and understanding the particular phenomenon of the CI process in sport. A systematic review protocol was established, and a total of 61 articles from the CI (34) and PA (27) domains were included. The SLR revealed substantial similarities of the current sport PA elements to the business CI process. The similarities were used to develop an information management process, which is illustrated as a literature CI model for sport coaches. Specific differences between the two domains indicated that empirical research is needed to fill the gaps of sport CI elements description.

4 Behavior of crossover operators in NSGA-III for large-scale optimization problems

Traditional multi-objective optimization evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) do not usu- ally meet the requirements for online data processing because of their high compu- tational costs. This drawback has resulted in difficulties in the deployment of MOEAs for multi-objective, large-scale optimization problems. Among different evolutionary algo- rithms, non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-the third version (NSGA-III) is a fairly new method capable of solving large-scale optimization problems with acceptable com- putational requirements. In this paper, the performance of three crossover operators of the NSGA-III algorithm is benchmarked using a large-scale optimization problem based on human electroencephalogram (EEG) signal processing. The studied operators are simu- lated binary (SBX), uniform crossover (UC), and single point (SI) crossovers. Furthermore, enhanced versions of the NSGA-III algorithm are proposed through introducing the con- cept of Stud and designing several improved crossover operators of SBX, UC, and SI. The performance of the proposed NSGA-III variants is verified on six large-scale optimization problems. Experimental results indicate that the NSGA-III methods with UC and UC-Stud (UCS) outperform the other developed variants.

5 Performance analysis of tilting pad journal bearing using COMSOL Multiphysics and Neural Networks

The objective of this paper is to study the effect of geometrical parameters on the performance of tilting pad journal bearing. COMSOL Multiphysics software is used to simulate the tilting pad journal bearing at different eccentricity ratios and pad clearances. The effect of changing pad numbers (from 3 to 6 pads) and the pads clearance angles (from 2 to 6) on the performance parameters such as the load carrying capacity, frictional torque and attitude angle was analyzed. It was found that as the number of pads increases the load carrying capacity and the friction coefficient increase, while the attitude angle decreases. Decreasing the clearance between pads leads to an increase in the load carrying capacity of the bearing while it has minor effect on the other performance parameters. The characteristic data obtained from COMSOL program is used to train three suggested neural networks. The first is a feed-forward Neural Network which consists of three layers with {80 sigmoid, 5 sigmoid and 1 linear} neurons. The second is a radial bases Neural Network and the third is a generalized regression Neural Network. Applying the three trained Neural Networks (Feed forward, Radial basis, and Generalized regression) to predict the performance of tilting pad bearing at values not used in the training process. The results show a high accuracy to predict the attitude angle, the coefficient of friction and the load carrying capacity. The percentage relative errors between the predicted values and that obtained by COMSOL are between (0 and 0.98) %. The neural networks model show high capacity in predicting the output variables correctly for both the training data and that which was not included.

6 Assessment of skills needed in entry-level urban foresters in the USA

Urban forestry is an interdisciplinary field of science and a profession that directly manages green infrastructure. There are many significant benefits to a properly managed urban forest resource, managers need to be appropriately prepared to successfully manage their resources. We conducted a mixed-mode survey that asked employers what skills they were looking for when they hired entry-level urban foresters and if recent hires possessed these skills. The survey was mailed to municipal urban forest managers at the top 200 most populous cities in the United States and was available online as a snowball survey. Most of the skill ratings for entry-level urban foresters in this study were positive. It appears that academic programs are meeting much of the needs for entry-level urban foresters as important-performance analysis found that employers felt most of the urban forestry, arboriculture, & forestry skills were being adequately met. Yet there was room for improvement in skills such as site plan review, project management, conflict resolution and community outreach. Interestingly, accredited degree programs were not valued in this survey, while some professional certifications and licenses were valued.

7 The role of stakeholder participation and sustainability integration in maritime transport: A structure-conduct-performance analysis

Anchored on stakeholder management theory, this study applies the Structure-Conduct-Performance framework to analyse the effects of various stakeholders’ participation on sustainability integration and organisational performance of maritime transport firms. Survey data were collected from 156 maritime transport firms. It was found that sustainability integration fully mediates the effects of stakeholders’ participation on organisational performance, which highlighted the importance of developing sustainability in a business context and engaging stake holder participation in the planning and management of sustainable maritime transport activities. The findings enrich theoretical research on stakeholder management and provide directions for maritime transport firms and transport policymakers to achieve better sustainability results.

8 Determinants of public satisfaction with an Urban Water environment treatment PPP project in Xuchang, China

City dwellers are critical stakeholders in the case of urban water environment treatment Public-Private Partnership projects (UWETP-PPP). This type of partnership is increasingly popular in China. Accordingly, public satisfaction should be considered in any performance evaluation of such a partnership. However, little attention has been paid to identify factors that affect public satisfaction with UWETP-PPP in scholarly studies. To address this gap, this case study aims to apply structural equation modeling (SEM) to explain and identify the determinants of public satisfaction with UWETP-PPP in Xuchang, China. Furthermore, the findings from this case study are intended to inform the development of more effective management strategies for a special-purpose vehicle (SPV) using importance-performance analysis (IPA). A total of 240 questionnaires on public satisfaction were collected through the case of the water environment treatment and ecological restoration project in Xuchang, China. This paper firstly employs exploratory factor analysis to extract 6 primary factors from 33 preliminary indicators that affect the public satisfaction with an UWETP-PPP to determine the factor structure of the model. Then, confirmatory factor analysis was used to verify the goodness of fit between the model and original data. Finally, IPA was applied to assist SPV in diagnosing potential management defects and determine the priority of water environment treatment for the sample of respondents based on SEM analysis. These findings provide a reference for the evaluation of public satisfaction in eco-environmental PPP projects. Moreover, the findings can inform strategic analysis to improve the allocation of limited resources more effectively.

10 Techno-economic performance analysis of zero energy house applications with home energy management system in Japan

ZEHs are one of the main practices in current Japanese low carbon demonstration projects. ZEHs with wide implementation of HEMS are expected to provide energy and cost-saving chances and are playing more as prosumers under collaboratively designed power-pricing schemes. This research focused on in- vestigating the techno-economic performance of real ZEH applications in Japan. Firstly, we introduced the current technological innovations and coordinated smart management strategies to optimize the cost or energy-saving performance of the ZEHs. Then, we illustrated the operational performances of four typical ZEHs focused on the power of self-sufficiency and dynamic power balance. Meanwhile, we examined the role of HEMS in managing integrated on-site generators based on how they operated according to histori- cal data. Results indicated that day-ahead prediction helped enhance the matching scenario between daily thermal consumption and preproduction of heat pumps, fuel cells could respond effectively to changes in simultaneous electricity and heating loads, and cogeneration systems could enhance the local electric- ity self-sufficiency ratio and reduce net load fluctuations, especially under high heating demand periods. We also concluded that efficient performance of ZEHs is not just a matter of advanced technologies but is also highly dependent on real-time demand-side management and local load-matching scenarios. Fi- nally, we analyzed and compared the impacts of integrated on-site generators among ZEHs on improving economic and environmental performance from an overall energy system. The analysis indicated that PV contributed to a significant ratio of annual ZEH’s economic profit. Fuel cells presented an advantage in reducing annual CO 2 emission.
