2 Biometric indicators can be early signs of declines in activities of daily living functioning among the Indonesian elderly
Background: Signs associated with the onset of disability can be useful in disability projection and have significant implications in elderly care policy. Objective: To explored the associations between biometric screening indicators and declines in activities of daily life (ADLs) functioning among the Indonesian elderly.
Methods: This is a prospective longitudinal cohort study. The Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) 4 conducted in 2007e2008, and IFLS 5 conducted in 2014e2015 were used to assess the association be- tween biometric indicators and ADLs at baseline and follow-up.
Results: Findings revealed that 22.3% of participants surveyed in 2007e2014 had become disabled in terms of ADLs. Anemia status, stage 2 hypertension, lung capacity, and a longer sit-to-stand time were associated with ADLs.
Conclusion: These findings are important to help early detection and potentially help the prevention of ADLs in elderly people in the future. Accuracy of disability estimation could possibly be improved if including biometric parameters.© 2020 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

3 A cancelable biometric authentication system based on feature-adaptive random projection
Biometric template data protection is critical in preventing user privacy and identity from leakage. Random projection based cancelable biometrics is an efficient and effective technique to achieve biometric template protection. However, traditional random projection based cancelable template design suffers from the attack via record multiplicity (ARM), where an adversary obtains multiple transformed templates from different applica- tions and the associated parameter keys so as to assemble them into a full-rank linear equation system, thereby retrieving the original feature vector. To address this issue, in this paper we propose a feature-adaptive random projection based method, in which the projection matrixes, the key to the ARM, are generated from one basic matrix in conjunction with local feature slots. The generated projection matrixes are discarded after use, thus making it difficult for the adversary to launch the ARM. Moreover, the random projection in the proposed method is performed on a local-feature basis. This feature-adaptive random projection can mitigate the negative impact of biometric uncertainty on recognition accuracy, as it limits the error to part of the transformed feature vector rather than the entire vector. The proposed method is evaluated on four public available databases FVC2002 DB1-DB3 and FVC2004 DB2. The experimental results and security analysis show the validity of the proposed method.

4 Refraction seismic complementing electrical method in subsurface characterization for tunneling in soft pyroclastic, (a case study)
The paper highlights the potential drawback of mapping a single geophysical property for subsurface characterization in potential engineering sites. As an exemplary case study, we present the geophysical survey conducted along the surface projection of a tunnel in the quaternary volcanic terrain of the Main Ethiopia Rift. Initially, geoelectrical mapping involving 12 Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) and a short Electrical Resistivity Imaging (ERI) line, was carried out. The 1D geoelectric model indicates that the formation resistivity at tunnel zone varies from 50 to 500 Ω∙m. The corresponding value on 2D model, (>350 Ω∙m), is also compatible. Based on limited available geological information, the geoelectric horizon was attributed to weathered and variably saturated ignimbrite. Following unexpected encounter during excavation, refraction seismic and core drilling were carried out for additional insights. Tomographic analysis of the seismic arrival times revealed that below a depth of 45 m, (tunnel zone), the velocity substratum is marked by a range, (1200–1800 m/s). Such low velocity range is typical of unconsolidated materials and, thus, cannot rationalize the geoelectrical attribution (ignimbrite). In a joint interpretation, the likely formation that may justify the observed range of the electrical resistivity and low P-wave velocity appears to be unwelded pyroclastic deposit (volcanic ash). Eventually, core samples from the tunnel zone confirmed the presence of thick ash flow. However, the unexpected ground conditions encountered at the early phase, due to insufficient information derived from a single geophysical parameter, caused extra cost and considerable delay.

5 The effects of population aging on South Korea’s economy: The National Transfer Accounts approach
This study examines how two factors of population aging, changes in fertility and mortality, will respectively affect South Korea’s economic future. The economic effects of population aging are examined by considering the population in each age group under alternative demographic scenarios. Utilizing recent population projections and South Korea’s National Transfer Accounts, the paper applies a simple decomposition model measuring the respective effects of fertility and mortality on separate aspects of the economy: labor income, private and public consumption, and public and private transfers. The results show that the effects of low fertility and low mortality on the economy are very different in direction, magnitude, timing, and impact by age group. The only effect of an aging population that is the same in all circumstances is the effect on the public pension system: low fertility and mortality will increase pressure on the public pension system of South Korea.

6 The nature and extent of demographic dividend in West Africa: National transfer account approach
The population of West Africa is fast growing with a projection of large youth population which may limit the potential opportunity provided by the African Agenda 2063 and the global 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the sub-region. This study investigates the nature and extent of demographic dividend in the West African sub-region, using the National Transfer Accounts (NTA) methodology. The Countries in the sub- region were aggregated based on the two available monetary zones including West Africa Monetary Zone (WAMZ) and West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA). Findings reveal that children consumption is lower than for adults in West Africa. However, consumption expenditure is lower in the UEMOA countries, than in WAMZ or the West African average at all age groups. It is also found that UEMOA countries reached peak income earlier than those of WAMZ. In addition, consumption expenditure exceeds the labour income at all ages below 29 years while surplus ends at 63 years. The study further discovered that West Africa had entered the period of first demographic dividend since year 1999, and expected to peak in the year 2049.

7 Microplastic abundance quantification via a computer-vision-based chemometrics-assisted approach
Microplastic (MP) contamination is a topic of growing global concern; these particles are ubiquitous in environmental ecosystems and have been found in aquatic, terrestrial, and atmospheric mediums. However, the protocols to quantify MPs in environmental samples have limitations and may lead to overestimation and/or underestimation of the plastic debris. Therefore, the aim of this research was to develop a simple procedure to determine the abundance of MPs using digital image processing and chemometric treatment. The proposed method combined computer-vision-based and multivariate calibration by partial least squares coupled with in- terval selection (iPLS and successive algorithm projection - iSPA). The abundance ranges of the yellow, blue, black, colourless, green, and red MPs were 1–212, 7–134, 0–50, 6–290, 0–113, and 20–392, respectively. When the models were applied to an independent set of samples, the following RMSEP values were found: 9.8 (yellow),6.4 (blue), 3.5 (black), 8.1 (colourless), 7.5 (green), and 19.3 (red). The results showed that image processing has the potential to quantify MPs with respect their colour. This method could help to reduce time-consuming and to avoid subjectivity in future analyses.

8 Carbon reduction decisions under progressive carbon tax regulations: A new dual-channel supply chain network equilibrium model
Since the production process in manufacturing industry is one of the main sources of carbon emissions, most governments have enacted relevant carbon policies to encourage manufacturers to invest in green production technology and reduce carbon emissions. However, the effectiveness of the carbon policy deserves further investigation because the manufacturers focus more on economic profits in actual operations. For this purpose, this paper proposes a dual-channel supply chain network (DCSCN) equilibrium model based on variational inequality theory to examine progressive carbon tax mechanism design of the government and its impacts on the production/pricing and abatement level decisions of the manufacturers in the DCSCN. In addition, this paper also examines the influences of the online channel introduction on supply chain network equilibrium decisions, carbon emissions and profits. We employ the modified projection and contraction algorithm to obtain the numerical solutions for several examples, and analyze the impacts of the key parameters on the equilibrium decisions and derive several managerial insights. The results show that if the government sets the high-level carbon tax and the cut-off value in progressive carbon tax policy appropriately, it can induce the manufacturers to improve abatement level actively; meanwhile the profit maximization goal of the manufacturer and the whole DCSCN can be consistent with the government’s low-carbon emission target. Moreover, the introduction of online channel may depress the economic activities and lead to profit loss for the supply chain network but contributes to reducing the carbon emissions under progressive carbon tax policy. The conclusions may be useful for reference in the study of the low-carbon supply chain and the design of carbon emission reduction policy for government.

9 Spacecraft relative navigation with an omnidirectional vision sensor
With the onset of autonomous spacecraft formation flying missions, the ability of satellites to autonomously navigate relatively to other space objects has become essential. To implement spacecraft relative navigation, relative measurements should be taken, and processed using relative state estimation. An efficient way to generate such information is by using vision-based measurements. Cameras are passive, low-energy, and information-rich sensors that do not actively interact with other space objects. However, pointing cameras with a conventional field-of-view to other space objects requires much a-priori initialization data; in particular, dedicated attitude maneuvers are needed, which may interfere with the satellite’s main mission. One way to overcome these difficulties is to use an omnidirectional vision sensor, which has a 360-degree horizontal field of view. In this work, we present the development of an omnidirectional vision sensor for satellites, which can be used for spacecraft relative navigation, formation flying, and space situational awareness. The study includes the development of the measurement equations, dynamical models, and state estimation algorithms, as well as a numerical study, an experimental investigation, and a space scalability analysis.

10 Jointly learning compact multi-view hash codes for few-shot FKP recognition
As a relatively new biometric trait, Finger-Knuckle-Print (FKP) plays a vital role in establishing a personal authentication system in modern society due to its rich discriminative features, low time cost in image capture and user-friendliness. However, most existing KFP descriptors are hand-crafted and fail to work well with limited training samples. In this paper, we propose a feature learning method for few-shot FKP recognition by jointly learning compact multi-view hash codes (JLCMHC) of a FKP image. We first form the multi-view data vectors (MVDV) to exploit the multiple feature-specific information from a FKP image. Then, we learn a feature projection to encode the MVDV into compact binary codes in an unsupervised manner, where 1) the variance of the learned feature codes on each view is maximized and 2) the difference of the inter-view binary codes is enlarged, so that the redundant information in MVDV is reduced and more informative features can be obtained. Lastly, we pool the binary codes into block-wise statistics features as the final descriptor for FKP representation and recognition. Experimental results on the existing benchmark FKP databases clearly show that the JLCMHC method outperforms the state-of-the-art FKP descriptors.© 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
