1 Coordination of vehicle-to-home and renewable capacity resources for energy management in resilience and self-healing building

The home energy management is an efficient tool to manage energy in the buildings that organizes different technologies and mathematical techniques to minimize energy cost. Home energy management often utilizes renewable energy resources to supply load demand in the building. Current home energy management systems utilize one or several of the available hardware-software capacity resources to deal with energy consumption in the buildings. However, a comprehensive model including various hardware and software capacity resources may increase the flexibility of the model. In this regard, this paper studies an efficient paradigm for home energy management in the building connected to electric grid. The proposed model forms an energy hub including the hardware resources (i.e., vehicle-to-home, wind turbine, and diesel generator) and software tools (i.e., demand response program). All the capacity resources and grid power are optimally adjusted to minimize the daily operational cost of the building as well as improvement of resiliency and self-healing. Wind energy and load uncertainty are modeled through stochastic programming. The seasonal pattern is considered for loads, prices, and wind energy. Simulation results demonstrate that operating all capacity resources minimizes the daily operational cost. When the wind energy, demand response program, vehicle-to-home, and diesel generator are not utilized, the cost is increased by 900, 230, 84, and 322%, respectively. It is also confirmed that the building not only can operate when one of the components is not connected, but also it is able to supply the demand under off-grid operation.

2 A novel biomimetic design of a 3D vascular structure for self-healing in cementitious materials using Murrays law

Nature has always been a source of inspiration in engineering applications and vascular networks, as in human skin and in a tree leaf, are one attribute that has received attention in the design of resilient structures. A vascular system houses healing agents within its hollow channels or interconnected networks which are incorporated within a cement matrix. It is the only self-healing approach that has the capability to address different scales of damage in cementitious materials. The main aim of this work is to develop a novel vascular network inspired by nature for self-healing in cementitious systems. To achieve this, a biomimetic three-dimensional (3D) vascular networkwas designed and generated followingMurrays lawfor circulatory blood volume transfer. The designed structureswere constructed through 3D printing and assessed in a cement-based matrix. One-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) models were also designed, printed and embedded into cement prisms to compare with the 3Dvascular system. Load recoverywas used to assess recovery inmechanical properties after the sample was cracked and pumped with sodium silicate for 28 days. Mechanical testing assessed the compatibility of the system with the surrounding matrix as well as the functionality of the network in delivering and releasing the healing agent at the location of damage. This initial proof of conceptwork confirmed the ability of all vascular systems to deliver the healing agent after a damage event, and the 3D vascular system demonstrated a significantly enhanced healing performance.

3 Big data analytics for wireless and wired network design: A survey

Currently, the world is witnessing a mounting avalanche of data due to the increasing number of mobile network subscribers, Internet websites, and online services. This trend is continuing to develop in a quick and diverse manner in the form of big data. Big data analytics can process large amounts of raw data and extract useful, smaller-sized information, which can be used by different parties to make reliable decisions. In this paper, we conduct a survey on the role that big data analytics can play in the design of data communication networks. Integrating the latest advances that employ big data analytics with the net works’ control/traffic layers might be the best way to build robust data communication networks with refined performance and intelligent features. First, the survey starts with the introduction of the big data basic concepts, framework, and characteristics. Second, we illustrate the main network design cycle em ploying big data analytics. This cycle represents the umbrella concept that unifies the surveyed topics. Third, there is a detailed review of the current academic and industrial efforts toward network design using big data analytics. Forth, we identify the challenges confronting the utilization of big data analytics in network design. Finally, we highlight several future research directions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first survey that addresses the use of big data analytics techniques for the design of a broad range of networks.
