Internet of Things-enabled Passive Contact Tracing in Smart Cities
2022 Contact tracing has been proven an essential practice during pandemic outbreaks and is a
critical non-pharmaceutical intervention to reduce mortality rates. While traditional con-
tact tracing approaches are gradually being replaced by peer-to-peer smartphone-based
systems, the new applications tend to ignore the Internet-of-Things (IoT) ecosystem that is
steadily growing in smart city environments. This work presents a contact tracing frame-
work that logs smart space users’ co-existence using IoT devices as reference anchors. The
design is non-intrusive as it relies on passive wireless interactions between each user’s
carried equipment (e.g., smartphone, wearable, proximity card) with an IoT device by uti-
lizing received signal strength indicators (RSSI). The proposed framework can log the iden-
tities for the interacting pair, their estimated distance, and the overlapping time duration.
Also, we propose a machine learning-based infection risk classification method to char-
acterize each interaction that relies on RSSI-based attributes and contact details. Finally,
the proposed contact tracing framework’s performance is evaluated through a real-world
case study of actual wireless interactions between users and IoT devices through Bluetooth
Low Energy advertising. The results demonstrate the system’s capability to accurately cap-
ture contact between mobile users and assess their infection risk provided adequate model
training over time.

IoT anomaly detection methods and applications: A survey
2022 Ongoing research on anomaly detection for the Internet of Things (IoT) is a rapidly expanding
field. This growth necessitates an examination of application trends and current gaps. The
vast majority of those publications are in areas such as network and infrastructure security,
sensor monitoring, smart home, and smart city applications and are extending into even more
sectors. Recent advancements in the field have increased the necessity to study the many IoT
anomaly detection applications. This paper begins with a summary of the detection methods
and applications, accompanied by a discussion of the categorization of IoT anomaly detection
algorithms. We then discuss the current publications to identify distinct application domains,
examining papers chosen based on our search criteria. The survey considers 64 papers among
recent publications published between January 2019 and July 2021. In recent publications, we
observed a shortage of IoT anomaly detection methodologies, for example, when dealing with
the integration of systems with various sensors, data and concept drifts, and data augmentation
where there is a shortage of Ground Truth data. Finally, we discuss the present such challenges
and offer new perspectives where further research is required.

Smart City Data Science: Towards data-driven smart cities with open research issues
2022 Cities are undergoing huge shifts in technology and operations in recent days, and ‘data science’
is driving the change in the current age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0 or 4IR).
Extracting useful knowledge or actionable insights from city data and building a corresponding
data-driven model is the key to making a city system automated and intelligent. Data science
is typically the scientific study and analysis of actual happenings with historical data using a
variety of scientific methodologies, machine learning techniques, processes, and systems. In this
paper, we concentrate on and explore ‘‘Smart City Data Science’’, where city data collected from
various sources such as sensors, Internet-connected devices, or other external sources, is being
mined for insights and hidden correlations to enhance decision-making processes and deliver
better and more intelligent services to citizens. To achieve this goal, artificial intelligence,
particularly, machine learning analytical modeling can be employed to provide deeper knowledge
about city data, which makes the computing process more actionable and intelligent in various
real-world city services. Finally, we identify and highlight ten open research issues for future
development and research in the context of data-driven smart cities. Overall, we aim to provide
an insight into smart city data science conceptualization on a broad scale, which can be used
as a reference guide for the researchers, industry professionals, as well as policy-makers of a
country, particularly, from the technological point of view.

2022 This study examines how the application of the IoT in smart cities is discussed in the current
academic literature. Based on bibliometric techniques, 1,802 articles were retrieved from the
Scopus database and analyzed to identify the temporal nature of IoT research, the most relevant
journals, authors, countries, keywords, and studies. The software tool VOSviewer was used to
build the keyword co-occurrence network and to cluster the pertinent literature. Results show the
significant growth of IoT research in recent years. The most productive authors, journals, and
countries were also identified. The main findings from the keyword co-occurrence clustering and
an in-depth qualitative analysis indicate that the IoT is used alongside other technologies
including cloud computing, big data analytics, blockchain, artificial intelligence, and wireless
telecommunication networks. The major applications of the IoT for smart cities include smart
buildings, transportation, healthcare, smart parking, and smart grids. This review is one of the
first attempts to map global IoT research in a smart city context and uses a comprehensive set of
articles and bibliometric techniques to provide scholars and practitioners with an overview of

A proactive role of IoT devices in building smart cities
2022 Due to rapid advancement in technology the world is rapidly changed to face the upcoming challenges and going
towards automation. The use of various IoT devices is making a vast approach and every happening becomes part
of the network and due to that towns are converting into smart cities. The IoT devices collect the data of every
happening smartly and send it for further processing. An imperative part of these devices is containing the
wireless sensors used for building smart cities. A giant set of data is collected in the sensors and is stored in the
data center. Subsequently, the huge data becomes an exorbitant mountain that must be managed smartly if a
smooth operation is required. In this study, how such big data can be managed shrewdly is going to explore and
the proactive role of IoT sensors are investigated which helps in building the future smart cities more independently. The impact of services such as Smart transport, smart energy, smart infrastructure, smart health, smart
agriculture, and smart recreation in respect of smart cities and the old traditional city has been analyzed through
an Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The obtained results showed a satisfactory level of local communities about
98% of people living in smart cities are satisfied in contrast to people living in old traditional cities and others
having a neutral opinion.

A systematic review of technologies and solutions to improve security and privacy protection of citizens in the smart city
بررسی سیستماتیک فناوری ها و راه حل ها برای بهبود امنیت و حفاظت از حریم خصوصی شهروندان در شهر هوشمند-2022 The development of smart cities through digital communications has improved citizens’ quality of
life and well-being. In these cities, IoT technology generates vast amounts of data at any given
time, which is analyzed to provide services to citizens. In the proper implementation of these
cities, a critical challenge is the violation of citizens’ privacy and security, which leads to a lack of
trust and pessimism toward the services of the smart city. To ensure citizens’ participation, smart
city developers should adequately protect their security and privacy from gaining their trust. If
citizens don’t want to participate, the main benefits of a smart city will be lost. This article
presents a comprehensive review of smart city security issues and privacy. It provides a basis for
categorizing current and future developments in this area and developing a thematic classifica-
tion to highlight the requirements and security strategies for designing a smart and safe city. The
paper identifies current security and privacy solutions and describes open research challenges and
issues. An output of this study is a systematic map of literature on the subject that identifies
critical concepts, evidence, challenges, solutions, and gaps. It summarizes the findings into a body
of evidence that has previously been heterogeneous and complex. keywords: مرور سیستماتیک توصیفی | شهر هوشمند | اینترنت اشیا | حریم خصوصی | امنیت | Descriptive systematic review | Smart city | IoT | Privacy | Security |

Perceptual quality-preserving black-box attack against deep learning image classifiers
حمله جعبه سیاه با کیفیت ادراکی علیه طبقه بندی کننده های تصویر یادگیری عمیق-2021 Deep neural networks provide unprecedented performance in all image classification problems, including biometric recognition systems, key elements in all smart city environments. Recent studies, however,
have shown their vulnerability to adversarial attacks, spawning intense research in this field. To improve
system security, new countermeasures and stronger attacks are proposed by the day. On the attacker’s
side, there is growing interest for the realistic black-box scenario, in which the user has no access to
the network parameters. The problem is to design efficient attacks which mislead the neural network
without compromising image quality. In this work, we propose to perform the black-box attack along
a high-saliency and low-distortion path, so as to improve both attack efficiency and image perceptual
quality. Experiments on real-world systems prove the effectiveness of the proposed approach both on
benchmark tasks and actual biometric applications. Keywords: Image classification | Face recognition | Adversarial attacks | Black-box |

A primer of knowledge management for smart city governance
2021 The concepts of smart city cannot be understood without examining their links with the knowledge society. In
this kind of society, knowledge must be considered as a capital shared not only with experts, but also with
citizens, within the target of sustainable development. After studying those concepts, the scope is to examine how
human knowledge and artificial intelligence can be combined in geographic knowledge systems, essentially
based on machine-processable knowledge and the concept of rules. Several geospatial rules are detailed in order
to distinguish several categories implying locational issues. Then, a general structure for geographic knowledge
base systems is given together with some fundamental elements for an infrastructure in which human collective
intelligence is a key-element. To conclude this paper, a research agenda is given to integrate urban and regional
management into the knowledge society. keywords: جامعه دانش | شهرهای هوشمند | برنامه ریزی شهری | سیستم های دانش جغرافیایی | قوانین جغرافیایی | مدیریت دانش | Knowledge society | Smart cities | Urban planning | Geographic knowledge systems | Geospatial rules | Knowledge management |
