1 Proposed Quantum AI solution for the Travelling Tournament Problem
In this paper, we propose an idea/solution for the Travelling Tournament Problem, which is a unique combinatorial problem tackling both feasibility and optimality of the solution. Being an NP-Hard problem, generating solutions can be extremely cost-ly, with most of the solutions of the said problem having a time complexity of as high as O(n!). Quantum Computing and artificial intelligence, on the other hand, is making great strides, and we believe that the immense computational potential of quantum computing can be used to solve these scheduling problems. Artificial Intelligence and machine learning present us with excellent frame-work strategies that we have envisaged to incorporate in our implementation. In the following paper, we delineate the features of our solution and how we propose to incorporate the quantum and classical aspects of computing.

2 Never underestimate your opponent: Hindsight bias causes overplacement and overentry into competition
This study investigates a source of comparative overconfidence, or over placement, which occurs when people overestimate themselves relative to others. We present a simple application of information projection (Madarász, 2012) to show that hindsight bias can lead to over placement and excessive willingness to compete. We run an experiment in which subjects choose between a competitive tournament and piece-rate compensation after observing some of their competitors’ past performance. We exogenously manipulate whether subjects have ex post information about their competitors’ past tasks (hindsight) or not (no hindsight). We find that hindsight bias generates over placement and increases subjects’ valuation of tournament participation by 19%. In line with theory, the additional tournament entry in the hindsight setting is driven by low-performing participants who should not have entered the tournament.

3 Tournament incentive mechanisms based on fairness preference in large-scale water diversion projects
Large-scale water diversion project has the characteristics of linear distribution and is usually conducted simultaneously by multiple contractors. A typical principal-agent relationship exists between the project owner and each contractor involved in executing the project. Due to the asymmetry of information and the different interest goals of the owner and contractors, the contractors are likely to engage in opportunistic behavior. This can have a seriously negative effect on the interests of the project owner and the public. In order to solve this problem and optimize contractors’ effort levels, this paper establishes a tournament incentives model operating under the existence of contractors’ fairness preferences, based on the principle-agent theory in the large-scale water diversion project. Also, a tournament incentives compensation distribution scheme is designed. The scheme is based on each agent’s ranking and degree of fairness preference. The results show that multiple contractors will be more inclined to put forth optimal effort after tournament incentives mechanism is introduced. Moreover, contractors’ optimal effort levels will increase as the degree of the incentive compensation gap between the two contractors increases. The study finds that the incentive coefficient for both top-ranked and second-ranked contractors should increase in line with corresponding increases in fairness preference degrees. This method will help to ensure that contractors put forward their optimal effort level, indirectly causing an increase in the total output performance of a large-scale water diversion project, thus achieving a win-win situation. Finally, the study’s conclusions are verified through a research study. The findings offer new insights for the development of stakeholder management between the owner and multi-contractor in large-scale water diversion projects.

4 Promoting the polluters? The competing objectives of energy efficiency, pollutant emissions, and economic performance in Chinese municipalities
With the rapid development of Chinas economy, energy efficiency and pollutant emissions have also entered our horizons and become two big issues. To explore the impacts that these three factors have on the promotion probability of municipal party secretaries, we have collected the data of 810 municipal party secretaries with position changes in the period of 2005–2015 and mainly adopted the probit model to conduct our empirical tests. Our results are as follows: (1) Higher economic performance, higher energy efficiency and lower pollution emissions can significantly increase the promotion probability of municipal party secretaries; (2) these three correlations evolve differently, the impact of economic performance declines slightly but always predominates, the impact of pollutant emission tends to grow while that of energy efficiency continues to decrease. This research provides a dynamic understanding of Chinese local officials’ promotion incentive and their trade-off among economy, energy and environment, which would be a valuable supplement for Institution Change Theory and an important reference for other countries with similar developing dilemma.

5 Tennis superstars: The relationship between star status and demand for tickets
Akin to other sports, professional tennis is urged to adopt a consumer centred strategy and understand the influence of the star status of elite players on demand for its core product. Measuring the impact that tennis players have on demand for match attendance remains a key element towards achieving that goal. Using data from the Australian Open ticket sales, the authors demonstrate how individual players have influenced stadium attendance at the Grand Slam. Findings indicate that some players are associated with a strong positive impact on demand for tickets, above and beyond their performance ratings, reflecting their value to the Australian Open. The authors discuss how this star status can be used to inform business decisions related to tournament management, match scheduling, and determining player appearance fees, to ultimately drive better commercial outcomes and deliver a world-class sporting event. The findings have implications for tournament organisers, player managers and those that market player activities.© 2019 Sport Management Association of Australia and New Zealand. 6 The effects of tournament horizon and the percentage of winners on social comparisons and performance in multi-period competitions
We examine the effects of two important tournament design features, tournament horizon and percentage of winners, on social comparisons and performance in a multi-period setting. Prior research has individually examined these two features, but has not examined their joint effects. Replicating prior research, we predict that a higher percentage of winners will result in better performance than a lower percentage of winners by inducing more social comparisons. We also predict that grand tournaments will result in better performance than repeated tournaments through their effects on the extent to which competitors will engage in social comparisons. We expect that relative to repeated tournaments, grand tournaments will encourage more social comparisons because the performance feedback provided to competitors will be more indicative of the likelihood of future period outcomes (i.e., winning or losing) than in a repeated tournament. We also examine the extent to which the percentage of winners moderates the strength of the predicted relations among tournament horizon, social comparisons and performance. Finally, we predict that in repeated tournaments using a higher percentage of winners will be more effective at sustaining effort in later periods but that these effects will be weaker for grand tournaments. Results from a laboratory experiment with 400 undergraduate student participants support these predictions. Moreover, we find no evidence that the percentage of winners influences the impact of tournament horizon on social comparisons or overall performance. We identify implications for theory and practice.

7 Competition, reach for yield, and money market funds
Do asset managers reach for yield because of competitive pressures in a low rate environment? I propose a tournament model of money market funds (MMFs) to study this question. When funds care about relative performance, an increase in the risk premium leads funds with lower default costs to increase risk taking, while funds with higher default costs decrease risk taking. Without changes in the premium, lower risk-free rates reduce the risk taking of all funds. I show that these predictions are consistent with MMF risk taking during the 2002–2008 period and that rank-based performance is a key determinant of money flows to MMFs.

8 Economics meets psychology: Experimental and self-reported measures of individual competitiveness
This study examines the relationship between economic and psychological approaches to measure individuals competitiveness. While psychologists typically use self-reported psychometric scales, economists tend to use behavioral measures obtained from economic experiments, where subjects confronted with specific paid tasks have to select into either a competitive or a piece-rate payment scheme. Both measurement approaches have remained largely isolated from one another. We demonstrate that a standard behavioral measure and a psycho metric scale of individual competitiveness are positively associated, but distinguishable with respect to the role of personal development motives. While self-reported competitiveness also emerges from personal development motives, the behavioral measure does not reflect such motives. The distinction between both measures is validated based on divergent associations with personality and interests in a competitive career.

9 A new hybrid approach for feature selection and support vector machine model selection based on self-adaptive cohort intelligence
This research proposes a new hybrid approach for feature selection and Support Vector Machine (SVM) model selection based on a new variation of Cohort Intelligence (CI) algorithm. Feature selection can improve the accuracy of classification algorithms and reduce their computation complexity by removing the irrelevant and redundant features. SVM is a classification algorithm that has been used in many ar eas, such as bioinformatics and pattern recognition. However, the classification accuracy of SVM depends mainly on tuning its hyperparameters (i.e., SVM model selection). This paper presents a framework that is comprised of the following two major components. First, Self-Adaptive Cohort Intelligence (SACI) algo rithm is proposed, which is a new variation of the emerging metaheuristic algorithm, Cohort Intelligence (CI). Second, SACI is integrated with SVM resulting in a new hybrid approach referred to as SVM–SACI for simultaneous feature selection and SVM model selection. SACI differs from CI by employing tournament based mutation and self-adaptive scheme for sampling interval and mutation rate. Furthermore, SACI is both real-coded and binary-coded, which makes it directly applicable to both binary and continuous do mains. The performance of SACI for feature selection and SVM model selection was examined using ten benchmark datasets from the literature and compared with those of CI and five well-known metaheuris tics, namely, Genetic Algorithm (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Differential Evolution (DE) and Artificial Bee Colony (ABC). The comparative results demonstrate that SACI outperformed CI and compa rable to or better than the other compared metaheuristics in terms of the SVM classification accuracy and dimensionality reduction. In addition, SACI requires less tuning efforts as the number of its control parameters is less than those of the other compared metaheuristics due to adopting the self-adaptive scheme in SACI. Finally, this research suggests employing more efficient methods for high-dimensional or large datasets due to the relatively high training time required by search strategies based on metaheuris tics when applied to such datasets.
