Deep reinforcement learning to optimise indoor temperature control and heating energy consumption in buildings
2020 In this work, Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) is implemented to control the supply water temperature
setpoint to terminal units of a heating system. The experiment was carried out for an office building
in an integrated simulation environment. A sensitivity analysis is carried out on relevant hyperparameters
to identify their optimal configuration. Moreover, two sets of input variables were considered for
assessing their impact on the adaptability capabilities of the DRL controller. In this context a static and
dynamic deployment of the DRL controller is performed. The trained control agent is tested for four different
scenarios to determine its adaptability to the variation of forcing variables such as weather conditions,
occupant presence patterns and different indoor temperature setpoint requirements. The
performance of the agent is evaluated against a reference controller that implements a combination of
rule-based and climatic-based logics. As a result, when the set of variables are adequately selected a heating
energy saving ranging between 5 and 12% is obtained with an enhanced indoor temperature control
with both static and dynamic deployment. Eventually the study proves that if the set of input variables
are not carefully selected a dynamic deployment is strictly required for obtaining good performance. Keywords: Deep reinforcement learning | Building adaptive control | Energy efficiency | Temperature control | HVAC |

Comparative study on the annual performance between loop thermosyphon solar water heating system and conventional solar water heating system
بررسی مقایسه ای عملکرد سالانه بین سیستم گرمایش آب خورشیدی حلقه ترموسیفون و سیستم گرمایش آب خورشیدی معمولی-2020 Loop thermosyphon (LT) is usually introduced to overcome the freezing and corrosion problems associated with
the conventional solar water heating (SWH) system. Compared with the conventional SWH system, the LT-SWH
system possesses a lower nighttime heat loss because of the thermal diode property of loop thermpsyphon but
bigger daytime heat loss because of the secondary heat exchange. However, the effect of above interaction to the
system performance is rarely reported based on long-term running. In this study, based on the typical meteorological
year data of Fuzhou city, annual performances of above two systems, including the effective number of
supplying days, effective heat gain and nighttime heat loss, are comparatively analyzed under two different
operational modes. Variations of above mentioned variables with the increment in the set temperature are
discussed. The results indicate that, under the discontinuous heating mode, the effective numbers of supplying
days of SWH system and LT-SWH system are 139 and 153, respectively. While the numbers of days are respectively
168 and 173 under the continuous heating mode. The SWH system possesses an expected bigger
nighttime heat loss ratio with an average annual value of 15.07% corresponding to 6.15% for the LT-SWH
system. Particularly, for the LT-SWH system, the different relative magnitudes of heat loss coefficients functioning
at different times leads to a smaller temperature drop at night and also a smaller temperature rise at the
subsequent day. It generates an unanticipated results that corresponds to the same month from November to
April, the two systems have the approximate effective heat gain. The set temperature significantly influences the
relative magnitudes of annual effective number of supplying days and annual effective heat gain, the superiority
of LT-SWH system gradually diminishes and even reverses with the increment in the set temperature. The bigger
daytime heat loss dominating the dominance is responsible for that transition. Combining with a longer static
payback period, it is conditional to substitute the conventional SWH system with the LT-SWH system, especially
when the water temperature on demand is high. Keywords: Solar water heating system | Loop thermosyphon solar water heating system | Typical meteorological year | Effective heat gain | Nighttime heat loss |

Problems of engineering entrepreneurship in Africa: A design optimization example in solar thermal engineering
مشکلات کارآفرینی مهندسی در آفریقا: نمونه ای از بهینه سازی طراحی در مهندسی حرارت خورشیدی-2020 This paper addresses Africa’s challenges and opportunities to engineering entrepreneurs. A business environmental scan is done in line with the standard PESTLE analysis, identifying at least twenty generic problems across the continent. Focus is directed to an opportunity in solar water heating, where inade- quate electricity supply combines with a plentiful solar resource amidst environmental protection aware- ness, to make investments potentially worthwhile. Three home level market segments are identified. Key issues in the PESTLE scan are linked with available materials to formulate and solve a design optimization model for these segments. A competition-less product emerges for rural homes. Another – for small urban homes – can be retailed at 50% of current equivalent system prices, and yet, still make profitsfor the entrepreneur. Both these systems attain average temperatures in excess of 57 °C, the fatal levelfor most pathogenic bacteria. The 3rd and larger system for rich urban homes incorporates a supplemen-tary electric heater that is programmable to kick in half an hour before water withdrawal if solar energy has failed to maintain water temperature above 60 °C. The entrepreneur can still make profit if the pro- duct retails at 52% of the equivalent competition price.© 2019 Karabuk University. Publishing services by Elsevier B.V. Decision support methodologies and day-ahead optimization for smart building energy management in a dynamic pricing scenario
روشهای پشتیبانی تصمیم گیری و بهینه سازی روز به روز برای مدیریت انرژی هوشمند ساختمان در سناریوی قیمت گذاری پویا-2020 Nowadays identifying techniques aimed at a rational use of electric power has become even more impor- tant than the production of energy itself. This is caused by different factors, as the progressive saturation of the electricity grid, which is increasingly subject to connection requests, mainly due to the develop- ment of plants which exploit renewable energy sources. This work suggests a new approach based on the combination of the optimizer and the simulator developed in the MATLAB/Simulink environment, in order to reduce the energy costs in buildings during the summer while taking into consideration the user com- fort. The electrical consumption of the entire building is taken into consideration is here examined with the aim of applying an air-conditioning system. The goal is to find, the day before, which is the optimal hourly scheduling of the control variables that must be applied the next day, taking into consideration all external conditions; weather conditions and the hourly energy price. In order to achieve this objective, the control variables, that have been changed, are the room temperature set points and the flow water temperature set point. As required by the UNI EN ISO 7730:2006 standard, comfort measurement is cal- culated by PPD (Predicted Percentage of Dissatisfied) index. Different scenarios are investigated and two optimization algorithms are compared. The results show that there is an average of 10 −28% potential cost saving, while maintaining a high level of comfort ( PPD ≤12). The study is carried out by simulating a real office building in Italy, and the comparisons are shown regarding the actual settings applied to it. Projecting spatiotemporally explicit effects of climate change on stream temperature: a model comparison and implications for coldwater fishes
پیش بینی اثرات مکانی جزئی صریح از تغییرات آب و هوا بر دمای جریان: مقایسه مدل و پیامدهای مربوط به ماهی های آب سرد-2020 Conservation planners and resource managers seek information about how the availability and
locations of cold-water habitats will change in the future and how these predictions vary among
models. We used a physical process-based model to demonstrate the implications of climate
5 change for streamflow and water temperature in two watersheds with distinctive flow regimes:
the Snoqualmie watershed (WA) and Siletz watershed (OR), USA. Our model incorporated a
downscaled ensemble of global climate model outputs and was calibrated with in situ and
remotely sensed water temperatures. We compared predictions from our processed-based model
to those from a publicly available and widely used statistical model. The process-based model
10 projected greater changes in summer maximum water temperatures for the mixed-rain-snow
Snoqualmie watershed than for the rain-dominated Siletz watershed as a result of the nearcomplete
loss of winter snowpack and significant reduction in summer flow in the Snoqualmie
watershed expected by the 2080s. Both models projected generally similar future spatial patterns
of maximum water temperature in the two rivers, with cool reaches distributed farther upstream
15 and fewer in number. However, the process-based model projected higher spatial heterogeneity
in water temperature due to our spatially explicit simulation of streamflow and because we
calibrated the model with spatially continuous remotely sensed water temperature data. We used
stream temperature projections to assess the vulnerability of Pacific salmon and trout to changes
in the spatial distribution of cold-water habitats during August by the 2080s. Results suggest that
20 salmonids may have fewer summertime cold-water habitats in both watersheds. Projected stream
warming may further limit particular species and life stages, especially in the Snoqualmie
watershed. Our comparison of models highlights the importance of considering what might be
gained by using a process-based model for evaluating and prioritizing management actions that
mitigate climate impacts on cold-water habitats for stream fishes. Keywords : water temperature | thermal refuge | climate change | process-based model | spatial stream network model | vulnerability assessment |
