1 An integrated production-logistics-crop rotation planning model for sugar beet supply chains
This paper presents an integrated strategic-tactical planning model for the sugar beet supply chain problem. The model includes the critical agricultural and industrial decisions coupled with the transportation of crops by capacitated vehicles from farms to the processing facilities. In the agricultural stage, the proposed model is used to analyze both agronomic and operational constraints for achieving a sustainable farming system through feasible strategic crop rotation plans. These plans integrate crop sequences with temporal and spatial variations while considering the known seasonal demand. The agricultural decisions involve crops planting and harvesting decisions to fulfill both fresh produce crops and processing demands. In the industrial stage, the key decisions include aggregate production plans for processing the harvested beet, as well as managing the shipping and storage of these agro-materials in the production facility. In this paper, a binary integer programming model is formulated with the objective of minimizing the overall operational cost including transportation and inventory of processed and non-processed beets. A unique time dimension was added to the planning horizon to allow crop rotation planning between different cropping seasons. A realistic case is used to test the formulated model and elaborate its complexity.

297-S235197892030843X-2020
The paper presents business processes business process models in the area of contract management in a workwear rental and laundry service company. The presented diagrams are the result of the analytical work performed by the multidisciplinary team of experts. The team consists of IT specialist, subject-matter experts and employees of the rental company. Business models presented in the article are described in accordance with the assumptions of BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation). The models of the rental company’s activities were created in the ARIS software environment, where the simulation of all necessary operations was carried out. As the result of simulation experiments a number of interesting parameters were obtained. There is no possibility to obtain these parameters in the static analysis of a business process. They can be only determined by the dynamic analysis. A sample results show the frequency of various significant events, accumulated time corresponding to activities performance, number of actions being performed by different people, overall working time for employees, the degree of the human factor use, and the global cost connected with different activities. The following process models have been developed, simulated and optimized: Release of an employee, Locker room change request, Clothing size change request for an employee, Cabinet location change request, Clothing sets amount change request, Personal data change, Employment process, Registration of the own clothing for an employee, New cabinet order, New set of keys set up, Transfer of an employee, Clothing repair request.© 2020 The Authors. 3 Cooperative multi-agent system for production control using reinforcement learning
Multi-agent systems can limit the control problem in complex production systems and solve them more efficiently. However, they often show local optimization tendencies. This paper presents a novel approach for a cooperative multi-agent system, which uses reinforcement learning and considers global key performance indicators. For this purpose, a central deep q-learning module transfers its knowledge to the cooperative order agents. The order agent’s experience is stored in a replay memory for subsequent reinforcement learning. Interdependencies between the characteristics of nonlinear production systems and learning parameters are investigated and the performance is evaluated in comparison to conventional methods of production control.

4 Enhancing supply chain production-marketing planning with geometric multivariate demand function (a case study of textile industry)
In this paper, a multi-period, multi-product, multi-site, multi-sales channel aggregate production planning problem including ordering preferences is presented in an integrated two-echelon supply chain to avoid the suboptimality caused by separate, sequential decisions of production and the marketing/retailing chain. Each customer demand class is affected by price, marketing expenditures and product quality involving customer willingness-to-pay. In addition, the immigration of customers between submarkets (i.e. cannibalization) is considered in the market-segmented environment due to imperfect segmentation. This research develops a geometric programming model to formulate the issue of joint price differentiation and multi-site aggregate production planning decisions by maximizing the total profit of the supply chain. To tackle the model and obtain solutions, we tailor an efficient analytical solution procedure to convert the original highly non-linear programming model into a convex programming equivalent. Finally, a numerical study of garment supply chain is presented to demonstrate the performance of the model and solution approaches. The research findings indicate a positive relationship between the scaling constant of price-dependent demand and the total profit rate. Moreover, as price gaps grow, the utility of price differentiation is decreased.

5 A deep reinforcement learning approach for chemical production scheduling
This work examines applying deep reinforcement learning to a chemical production scheduling process to account for uncertainty and achieve online, dynamic scheduling, and benchmarks the results with a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model that schedules each time interval on a receding horizon basis. An industrial example is used as a case study for comparing the differing approaches. Results show that the reinforcement learning method outperforms the naive MILP approaches and is competitive with a shrinking horizon MILP approach in terms of profitability, inventory levels, and customer service. The speed and flexibility of the reinforcement learning system is promising for achieving real-time optimiza- tion of a scheduling system, but there is reason to pursue integration of data-driven deep reinforcement learning methods and model-based mathematical optimization approaches.

6 “Messy” marginal costs: Internal pricing of environmental aspects on the firm level
Internal pricing of environmental aspects is usually not embedded in management accounting systems. Therefore, we first show that pricing from a corporative perspective is possible and applicable. Contrary to common belief, we also show that marginal costs curves of environmental aspects are often not monotonic and price changes are highly context-specific. We introduce a model that addresses different environmental aspects that translate into constraints or change direct cost factors in the objective function. Environmental constraints originate from different types of limit values concerning emissions and production processes as well as restraining the potential environmental damage as the outcome of ecological valuation methods. Direct cost factors include the taxation of emissions and costs stemming from being involved in the emissions trading market. Our model allows for calculating the marginal (indirect) costs of these environmental aspects as the constraints might enforce factor and product substitutions. We show that the marginal costs differ substantially from the direct costs and do not follow a predictable pattern. Sensitivity analysis and parametric programming are applied to set up an internal pricing and cost allocation scheme for environmental aspects, specifically focusing on the pricing of emissions, resources and processes, of production and recycling. The models implications on corporate decision making are illustrated by a numerical example that draws on the opportunity of process substitution, e.g. producing a product on different machines. Even though we cannot use original data for proprietary reasons, such settings are highly relevant in industry and the energy sector.

7 Avoiding the capacity cost trap: Three means of smoothing under cyclical production planning
Companies tend to set their master production schedule weekly, even when producing and shipping on a daily basis—the term for this is staggered deliveries. This practice is common even when there is no marginal cost of setting a new schedule. We argue that the practice is sound for companies that use the ubiquitous order-up-to (OUT) policy to control production of products with a significant capacity cost. Under these conditions, the length of the order cycle (time between schedule updates) has a damping effect on production, while a unit (daily) order cycle can cause significant capacity costs. We call this the capacity cost trap. Developing an analytical model based on industrial evidence, we derive capacity and inventory costs under the staggered OUT policy, showing that for this policy there is an optimal order cycle possibly greater than unity. To improve on this solution, we consider three approaches to smoothing: either levelling within the cycle, deferring excess production or idling to future cycles via a proportional OUT policy, or increasing the length of the cycle. By deriving exact cost expressions we compare these approaches, finding that smoothing by employing the proportional OUT policy is sufficient to avoid the capacity cost trap.

8 Subcontracting strategies with production and maintenance policies for a manufacturing system subject to progressive deterioration
This paper investigates the case of a manufacturing system subject to several progressive deterioration processes through an integrated model that seeks to determine the subcontracting, production and maintenance strategies employed simultaneously. The model is based on the premise that such deterioration affects several performance indices of the machine, centered mainly on the quality of the parts produced and on its reliability. When a machine fails, a minimal repair is conducted and preventive maintenance is available to restore the machine to initial conditions. The control policies indicate the production and preventive maintenance rates, as well as the amount of subcontracting required as a support measure to satisfy product demand. The main objective of the model is to minimize the discounted overall cost, which comprises production, subcontracting, inventory, backlog, preventive maintenance, defectives and repair costs. Hence, we develop a stochastic optimal control model, and numerical methods are used to solve optimality conditions in order to define the structure of the control policies. A simulation-based approach comprising statistical analysis and optimization techniques is applied to determine the optimal parameters associated with the structure of the control policies. The results obtained highlight the strong relations between production, maintenance, deterioration, reliability and quality, which justify the development of an integrated model. Through a numerical example and an extensive sensitivity analysis, we validate our approach.

10 From process control to supply chain management: An overview of integrated decision making strategies
Optimal decision-making in a process industry is fundamental in order to guarantee optimality of oper ations and increase profits and performance of a company. Decision-making occurs at different levels, from process control to supply chain management. Traditionally, these decisions have been considered individually, with little or no interaction between each other. However, an integrated decision-making framework can guarantee solutions closer to optimality. Such integration usually results in complex and large scale problems that are difficult to solve. We provide an overview of integrated decision-making strategies and review recent advances in the area, highlighting promising works as well as the main challenges that have yet to be overcome.
