Finding the shortest path in a familiar environment: A comparison between describing and walking a path after accounting for the role of individual factors
پیدا کردن کوتاه ترین مسیر در یک محیط آشنا: مقایسه بین توصیف و پیاده روی مسیر پس از حسابداری برای نقش عوامل فردی-2021 Finding the shortest path to a destination is a refined navigation ability little explored as yet in familiar envi-
ronments. The present study examined this ability when walking or describing the path, and how performance
relates to individual differences. Sixty-seven undergraduates familiar with the area around their campus were
asked to find the shortest path to a destination by walking there or describing it in writing. Several visuospatial
tasks and questionnaires were administered. It emerged that shortest path finding performance was supported by
familiarity and sense of direction. After accounting for these individual factors, participants performed better
when walking than when describing a path. Overall, the results showed that retrieving spatial knowledge about
familiar environments relates to individual differences and recall condition, walking a path being easier than

Age, gender, personality, ideological attitudes and individual differences in a persons news spectrum: how many and who might be prone to “filter bubbles” and “echo chambers” online?
-2020 Potential effects of demographics, personality, and ideological attitudes on the number of news sources consumed
should be investigated. The number of news sources consumed, in turn, was seen as inverse proxy for the susceptibility
to be caught in “filter bubbles” and/or “echo chambers” (online), which are hotly discussed topics also
in politics. A sample of 1,681 (n ¼ 557 males) participants provided data on demographics, the Big Five as well as
Right-Wing Authoritarianism (RWA) alongside the number of different news sources consumed and current
voting preferences. Results showed that age (positively), gender (higher in males), Openness (positively), and
RWA (negatively) predicted the number of different news sources consumed. The group of participants consuming
news exclusively offline showed highest scores in Conscientiousness and lowest scores in Neuroticism compared
to the “news feeds only” and the “news feeds and online” groups. However, less than 5% of the participants
exclusively consumed news via news feeds of social networking sites. Participants who stated that they would not
vote reported the lowest number of different news sources consumed. These findings reveal first insights into
predisposing factors for the susceptibility to be caught in “filter bubbles” and/or “echo chamber” online and how
this might be associated with voting preferences. Keywords: Psychology | Media psychology | Individual differences | Digital media | Political science | Political behavior | News spectrum | Big Five | RWA | Filter bubble | Echo chamber |

An Expert System Gap Analysis and Empirical Triangulation of Individual Differences, Interventions, and Information Technology Applications in Alertness of Railroad Workers
تجزیه و تحلیل شکاف سیستم خبره و مثلث تجربی تفاوت های فردی ، مداخلات و کاربردهای فناوری اطلاعات در هوشیاری کارگران راهآهن-2019 In this abstract we would like to provide some exciting concrete information including the
article’s main impact and significance on expert and intelligent systems. The main impact is that
the PTC expert intelligent system fills in the gaps between the human and software decision
making processes. This gap analysis is analyzed via empirical triangulation of rail worker data
collected from its groups, individuals and the rail industry itself. We utilize an expert intelligent
system PTC information technology application to both measure and to improve the alertness of
the groups and workers in order to improve the overall safety of the railways through reduced
human errors and failures to prevent accidents. Many individual differences in alertness among
military, railroad, and other industry workers stem from a lack of sufficient sleep. This continues
to be a concern in the railroad industry, even with the implementation of positive train control
(PTC) expert system technology. Information technology aids such as PTC cannot prevent all
accidents, and errors and failures with PTC may occur. Furthermore, drug interventions are a
short-term solution for improving alertness. This study investigated the effect of sleep
deprivation on the alertness of railroad signalmen at work, individual differences in alertness,
and the information technology available to improve alertness. We investigated various
information and communication technology control systems that can be used to maintain
operational safety in the railroad industry in the face of incompatible circadian rhythms due to
irregular hours, weekend work, and night operations. To fully explain individual differences after
the adoption of technology, our approach posits the necessary parameters that one must consider
for reason-oriented action, sequential updating, feedback, and technology acceptance in a unified
model. This triangulation can help manage workers by efficiently increasing their productivity
and improving their health. In our analysis we used R statistical software and Tableau. To test
our theory, we issued an Apple watch to a locomotive engineer. The perceived usefulness,
perceived ease of use, and actual use he reported led to an analysis of his sleep patterns that
eventually ended in his adoption of a sleep apnea device and an improvement in his alertness and
effectiveness. His adoption of the technology also resulted in a decrease in his use of chemical
interventions to increase his alertness. Our model shows that the alertness of signalmen can be
predicted. Therefore, we recommend that the alertness of all railroad workers be predicted given
the safety limitations of PTC. Keywords : Sleep Deprivation | Fatigue | Stress | Expert System | Alertness | Empirical Analysis |

Workflows and individual differences during visually guided routine tasks in a road traffic management control room
2017 Road traffic control rooms rely on human operators to monitor and interact with information presented
on multiple displays. Past studies have found inconsistent use of available visual information sources in
such settings across different domains. In this study, we aimed to broaden the understanding of observer
behaviour in control rooms by analysing a case study in road traffic control. We conducted a field study in
a live road traffic control room where five operators responded to incidents while wearing a mobile eye
tracker. Using qualitative and quantitative approaches, we investigated the operators’ workflow using
ergonomics methods and quantified visual information sampling. We found that individuals showed
differing preferences for viewing modalities and weighting of task components, with a strong coupling
between eye and head movement. For the quantitative analysis of the eye tracking data, we propose a
number of metrics which may prove useful to compare visual sampling behaviour across domains in
future.

General and specific factors in the processing of faces
2017 The ability to recognize faces varies considerably between individuals, but does performance co-vary for
tests of different aspects of face processing? For 397 participants (of whom the majority were university
students) we obtained scores on the Mooney Face Test, Glasgow Face Matching Test (GFMT), Cambridge
Face Memory Test (CFMT) and Composite Face Test. Overall performance was significantly correlated for
each pair of tests, and we suggest the term f for the factor underlying this pattern of positive correlations.
However, there were large variations in the amount of variance shared by individual tests: The GFMT and
CFMT are strongly related, whereas the GFMT and the Mooney test tap largely independent abilities. We
do not replicate a frequently reported relationship between holistic processing (from the Composite test)
and face recognition (from the CFMT)—indeed, holistic processing does not correlate with any of our
tests. We report associations of performance with digit ratio and autism-spectrum quotient (AQ), and
from our genome-wide association study we include a list of suggestive genetic associations with perfor
mance on the four face tests, as well as with f.

Social network sites influence recovery from social exclusion: Individual differences in social anxiety
سایت های شبکه های اجتماعی از محرومیت اجتماعی جلوگیری می کنند: تفاوت های فردی در اضطراب اجتماعی-2017 Social network sites (SNSs) have been found to be closely associated with responses to social exclusion
and to impact people with high or low levels of social anxiety in different ways. Our study tested whether
social anxiety, an individual difference variable, affected the association between SNSs and responses to
social exclusion. A Cyberball game was conducted to create social exclusion, followed by a waiting period
during which participants were observed to see whether they would choose to use SNSs. Afterwards,
recovery from participants negative responses to exclusion was measured. Results showed that using
SNSs benefited the highly socially anxious (HSA) group in terms of recovering from disconnection and
feeling a sense of meaningful existence more than the low socially anxious (LSA) group. However, re
covery from disconnection was lower for LSA individuals who used SNSs than those who did not use
SNSs. Our research suggests that SNSs benefited HSA individuals after social exclusion, but hindered the
recovery of LSA individuals.

Individual differences and Information Security Awareness
تفاوت های فردی و آگاهی از امنیت اطلاعات-2017 The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between individuals Information Se- curity Awareness (ISA) and individual difference variables, namely age, gender, personality and risk- taking propensity. Within this study, ISA was defined as individuals knowledge of what policies and procedures they should follow, their understanding of why they should adhere to them (their attitude) and what they actually do (their behaviour). This was measured using the Human Aspects of Information Security Questionnaire (HAIS-Q). Individual difference variables were examined via a survey of 505 working Australians. It was found that conscientiousness, agreeableness, emotional stability and risk- taking propensity significantly explained variance in individuals’ ISA, while age and gender did not. Findings highlighted the need for future research to examine individual differences and their impact on ISA. Results of the study can be applied by industry to develop tailored InfoSec training programs.Crown Copyright © 2016 Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
