1 Biophilia and biophobia in website design: Improving internet information dissemination

The Internet is increasingly a source of information for populations around the world, and thus theorizing that website design, which leads to enhanced recall of web-based information, has important theoretical and practical implications. On the basis of evolutionary psychology, biophilia and biophobia theories show how humans developed emotional responses to aspects of their natural environments so as to enhance survival by triggering approach or avoidance behaviors. Enhanced memory for biophobic elements such as predators and biophilic elements such as food would be further fitness enhancing. This study aimed to show how website design based on biophilia and biophobia theories can elicit emotions and improve recall of web-based information. An experiment was performed with simulated national park websites that contained images designed to elicit emotional responses. The emotional responses (e.g., valence and arousal) were associated with increased recall of information presented on the websites. The study contributes by showing that biophilia theory and biophobic theory can guide website design research and improve information recall.

2 Extending the model of internet standards adoption: A cross-country comparison of IPv6 adoption

Internet standards are very important for the effective operation of organizations. This study extends on the model of Internet standards adoption by examining the effect of organizational factors on adoption of Internet standards across different cultures. We propose attitude, top management support, and participation as important organizational factors influencing Internet standards adoption. Surveys were conducted in Australia and China, and the results show that organizational factors indeed play an important role in Internet standards adoption. Moreover, the effects of organizational factors are significantly different between the two countries. Discussion and implications of these findings are provided to conclude this study.

3 Questioner or question: Predicting the response rate in social question and answering on Sina Weibo

With the noted popularity of social networking sites, people increasingly rely on these social networks to address their information needs. Although social question and answering is potentially an important venue seeking information online, it, unfortunately, suffers from a problem of low response rate, with the majority of questions receiving no response. To understand why the response rate of social question and answering is low and hopefully to increase it in the future, this research analyzes extrinsic factors that may influence the response probability of questions posted on Sina Weibo. We propose 17 influential factors from 2 different perspectives: the content of the question, and the characteristics of the questioner. We also train a prediction model to forecast a questions likelihood of being responded based on the proposed features We test our predictive model on more than 60,000 real-world questions posted on Weibo, which generate more than 600,000 responses. Findings show that a Weibos question answerability is primarily contingent on the questioner versus the question. Our findings indicate that using appreciation emojis can increase a questions response probability, whereas the use of hashtags negatively influences the chances of receiving answers. Our contribution is in providing insights for the design and development of future social question and answering tools, as well as for enhancing social network users’ collaboration in supporting social information seeking activities.

4 Keyword length and matching options as indicators of search intent in sponsored search

Sponsored search is an online advertising channel that has gained momentum worldwide. The key challenge is deciding on the types of keywords to bid on and matching options to utilise for the keywords. In this paper, we address this problem by providing a broad analysis on how the various traffic search metrics (length, CTR, average cost per click (CPC), average position, and quality score) influence the bidding results as the keyword matching option becomes broader, that is, from exact, to phrase to broad. Drawing on the shopping goals theory, we also establish the profile of the metrics associated with a more focused search intent across the matching options. Using a random sample of keywords selected from 9 640 keywords that online advertisers have bid on, spanning a variety of markets, the results indicate that as the matching option becomes narrower, that is, from broad to exact, the keyword traffic metrics increase in general, except for cost, which does not differ significantly across the matching options. Longer keywords, which are typically associated with a more focussed search intent, generate more clicks and have a higher quality measure on average across all matching options. The longer keywords are cheaper for the exact match option, but more expensive for the other matching options. The results are inconclusive with regard to the position that longer keywords occupy on a results page across the matching options. Thus, the narrower matching options and longer keywords matching those that a customer would typically use to search for a companys goods and services need to be targeted to ensure higher visits to a companys website.

5 Syntactic based approach for grammar question retrieval

With the popularity of online educational platforms, English learners can learn and practice no matter where they are and what they do. English grammar is one of the important components in learning English. To learn English grammar effectively, it requires students to practice questions containing focused grammar knowledge. In this paper, we study a novel problem of retrieving English grammar questions with similar grammatical focus. Since the grammatical focus similarity is different from textual similarity or sentence syntactic similarity, existing approaches cannot be applied directly to our problem. To address this problem, we propose a syntactic based approach for English grammar question retrieval which can retrieve related grammar questions with similar grammatical focus effectively. In the proposed syntactic based approach, we first propose a new syntactic tree, namely parse-key tree, to capture English grammar questions’ grammatical focus. Next, we propose two kernel functions, namely relaxed tree kernel and part-of-speech order kernel, to compute the similarity between two parse-key trees of the query and grammar questions in the collection. Then, the retrieved grammar questions are ranked according to the similarity between the parse-key trees. In addition, if a query is submitted together with answer choices, conceptual similarity and textual similarity are also incorporated to further improve the retrieval accuracy. The performance results have shown that our proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art methods based on statistical analysis and syntactic analysis.

6 The Internet of Things: A survey

This paper addresses the Internet of Things. Main enabling factor of this promising paradigm is the integration of several technologies and communications solutions. Identification and tracking technologies, wired and wireless sensor and actuator networks, enhanced communication protocols (shared with the Next Generation Internet), and distributed intelligence for smart objects are just the most relevant. As one can easily imagine, any serious contribution to the advance of the Internet of Things must necessarily be the result of synergetic activities conducted in different fields of knowledge, such as telecommunications, informatics, electronics and social science. In such a complex scenario, this survey is directed to those who want to approach this complex discipline and contribute to its development. Different visions of this Internet of Things paradigm are reported and enabling technologies reviewed. What emerges is that still major issues shall be faced by the research community.
