Blaming rape on sleep: A psychoanalytic intervention
2019 The governance of sleep sex (or sexsomnia) in the criminal law is a nightmare. Press reports of sleeping, often
drunk, men acquitted as automatons of raping adults and children suggest cases are rising. The use of automatism,
rather than insanity, in these cases is strong evidence of the immemorial struggle faced by legal psychiatry
in appropriately construing unconscious defendants. This paper responds by drawing on well-established
psychoanalytic conceptions of unconsciousness to present sexsomnia as dispositional to the defendant. Taking
the Freudian concepts of eros and death instinct, it asserts that sexsomniacs are acting on repressed sadistic
desires. Accordingly, those on notice of their sexsomnia, who fail to mitigate the risk of further attacks, should be
guilty of rape. Reliance on (a reformed) insanity defence – being a denial of responsibility at the time of the
offence – undermines the scope of the criminal law to self-responsibilise sexsomniacs against perpetrating unwanted
sex. Keywords: Sexsomnia | Rape | Insanity | Automatism | Freud | Repression |

The reality behind the Istanbul convention: Shattering conservative delusions
2019 This paper analyzes the long process of ratification of the Istanbul Convention in Croatia and its political instrumentalization.
The Convention was ratified in 2018, following a strong anti-ratification campaign which
exemplifies the strengthening of a global pushback against womens rights. The conservative movement behind
this campaign, which is still ongoing - with the shifted goal of withdrawing from the Convention through the
mechanism of referendum, spread a number of misconceptions about the Convention, based foremost on the
narrative that the Convention would impose an undesirable “gender ideology”. The aim of this paper is to shatter
these delusions by first deconstructing the notions of gender, gender ideology and gender-based violence, and
then by exploring the extent to which gender (identity) already plays a role within Croatian legal system, including
through the jurisprudence of the ECtHR. The last part focuses on particular positive novelties the
Istanbul Convention will bring to Croatian society. Keywords: Sex | Gender | Gender-based violence | Istanbul convention | Gender ideology | Stereotypes |

Stay alert: Forecasting the risks of sexting in Korea using social big data
2018 Youth sexting, which is commonly defined as the intimate image sharing of persons under 18, is an
emerging phenomenon that has garnered significant attention in South Korea and in particular, the
South Korean government. Widely recognized for its potential to generate undue harm, the South Korean
government has initiated a movement determined to block the participation of obscene content sharing
between youths under the age of 18. While there may be different avenues to examine this phenomenon
from, an approach notably absent from this list is the use of big data and data mining information
produced via the dispersion of the Internet and social media. Using social big data, the study found that
teenagers sexting in hopes of obtaining a higher volume of attention among friends; file sharing is more
frequented than image distribution through sexting; and transactions without “adult pornography” and
with “smishing” were the most influential in addressing the risks of sexting in South Korea. While big
data and data mining do not make any inferences themselves, the benefits of analyzing social big data
lies in its ability to incorporate a much larger volume of data and confirm the thoughts of a diverse range
of participants.

“Being sexy” and the labor market: Self-objectification in job search related social networks
"سکسی بودن" و بازار کار: خود ازمایی در شبکه های اجتماعی مرتبط با جستجوی شغلی-2017 When searching for jobs, many people resort to presenting themselves in ways construed to appeal the
most to potential employers. Subsequently, they are prone to self-objectification (SO), a phenomenon
studied so far in social psychology, but insufficiently in media psychology, and even less so in the context
of job search through social networks. Whereas prior research shows mostly negative, i.e., dehumanizing
SO effects, positive effects were also identified, e.g., reduced uncertainty and increased self-efficacy
perceptions. The present correlational study proposes and validates a scale for job-search related SO,
and applies this to verify a conceptual model of SO effects and predictors, based on a survey involving
N ¼ 258 social network users and structural equations modeling. A positive SO effect on job related self
efficacy and well-being was found. The study adds to social networks research, as well as to social
psychological SO research, emphasizing positive SO effects. Implications for further research, practice
and development are discussed.

Sexy online self-presentation on social network sites and the willingness to engage in sexting: A comparison of gender and age
2017 The present study investigated whether engaging in sexy self-presentations on social
network sites (SNSs) or exposure to sexy self-presentations on SNSs predicts the will
ingness to engage in sexting. A second aim of the present study was to investigate whether
adolescent girls demonstrate stronger relationships between (exposure to) sexy online
self-presentations on SNSs and willingness to sext than adolescent boys and young adult
men and women. A two-wave panel survey among 953 Dutch adolescents (13e17 years
old, 50.7% male) and 899 Dutch young adults (18e25 years old, 43.9% male) showed that
engaging in sexy self-presentations on SNSs increased the willingness to engage in sexting,
but only among adolescent girls. Exposure to sexy self-presentations of others did not
predict the willingness to engage in sexting. The findings call for more research on the role
of gender and age in the link between sexy self-presentation and sexting.
