A knowledge-based risk management tool for construction projects using case-based reasoning
یک ابزار مدیریت ریسک مبتنی بر دانش برای پروژه های ساختمانی با استفاده از استدلال مبتنی بر مورد-2021 Construction projects are often deemed as complex and high-risk endeavours, mostly because of their vulnera-
bility to external conditions as well as project-related uncertainties. Risk management (RM) is a critical success
factor for companies operating in the construction industry. RM is a knowledge-intensive process that requires
effective management of risk-related knowledge. Although some research has already been conducted to develop
tools to support knowledge-based RM processes, most of these tools ignore some critical features, such as live
knowledge capture, web-based platform for knowledge sharing and effective case retrieval for learning from past
projects. Moreover, several RM phases, such as risk identification, analysis, response and monitoring are not
usually integrated. Thus, this study aims to bridge these gaps by developing a knowledge-based RM tool (namely,
CBRisk) via case-based reasoning (CBR). CBRisk has been developed as a web-based tool that supports the cyclic
RM process and utilises an effective case retrieval method considering a comprehensive list of project similarity
features in the form of fuzzy linguistic variables. Finally, the developed tool was evaluated and validated by
conducting black-box testing and expert review meeting. Results demonstrated that CBRisk has a considerable
potential to enhance the effectiveness of RM in construction projects and may be used in other project-based
industries with minimal modifications. keywords: هوش مصنوعی | فراگیری ماشین | مدیریت ریسک مبتنی بر دانش | مدیریت ریسک | مدیریت دانش | استدلال مبتنی بر مورد | ابزار مبتنی بر وب | Artificial intelligence | Machine learning | Knowledge-based risk management | Risk management | Knowledge management | Case-based reasoning | Web-based tool |

Development of a knowledge-based tool for waste management of prefabricated steel structure projects
توسعه یک ابزار مبتنی بر دانش برای مدیریت زباله پروژه های ساختمانی فولاد پیش ساخته-2021 Although the construction industry is critical for sustainability goals due to the high amount of waste it gen-
erates, its waste management performance is still not at the desired level. One of the main reasons for this can be
attributed to the lack of enough knowledge of construction companies on the sources/reasons of waste and
amount of waste. The major aim of this study was to develop a knowledge-based tool for capturing, storing, and
disseminating waste-related knowledge for prefabricated steel construction projects. The developed tool can be
used for waste estimation, monitoring, and minimization of all materials used during different phases of pre-
fabricated steel structure projects based on the data captured from current and previous projects. One advantage
of the tool is the integration of all processes of waste management, which have been usually considered inde-
pendently in previous studies. Moreover, being a knowledge-based tool, it can increase awareness and learning
ability of companies about waste and its management. Finally, although the process model of the tool is generic
and can operate in alternative domains, the tool is applicable for only prefabricated steel projects. It is believed
that the process model and the tool presented in this paper can be further customized for different project types
and considering different company needs. keywords: ابزار مدیریت زباله مبتنی بر دانش | پروژه های ساختمانی فولاد پیش ساخته | صنعت ساخت و ساز | زباله های مواد | ابزار مبتنی بر وب | Knowledge-based waste management tool | Prefabricated steel structure projects | Construction industry | Material waste | Web-based tool |

Investigating the impact of inflation on building materials prices in construction industry
بررسی تأثیر تورم بر قیمت مصالح ساختمانی در صنعت ساخت و ساز-2020 In spite of the advancement in the management of the construction industry, construction
projects still facing the issue of cost overrun. Many factors influence the cost overrun but one of
the most critical is the inflation rate, which plays a vital role in deviating prices of construction
materials during the project lifecycle. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the behaviour of
building materials prices and its correlation with the inflation rate. The Spearman test was
adopted to measure the correlation between the prices of construction materials and the inflation
rate. It was revealed that a significant positive and negative relationship between the inflation
rate and the building materials prices exists, indicating that the change in the inflation rate will
also affect the prices which will result in deviating the initial budget of a project. The correlation
was investigated by the individual materials of cement, steel reinforcement, plumbing works,
sanitary fitting, ironmongery, bricks, roofing, ceiling board, paints and plywood. All these
materials groups representing an individual industry thus can be concluded that the inflation rate
is influencing these industries as well. Therefore, it is essential to consider the inflation rate
while calculating the budget at the beginning of the construction projects, with a
recommendation to develop a budget estimation model which can incorporate the changing
behaviour of the construction materials due to the inflation rate along with other essential
parameters in setting up the project budget. Keywords: Construction industry| Cost overrun | Building materials prices | Inflation rate | Spearman Correlation |

Circular economy in built environment – Literature review and theory development
اقتصاد مدور در محیط ساخته شده - بررسی ادبیات و توسعه نظریه-2020 Circular economy (CE) has evolved gradually since its inception in the late 90s and has been implemented
differently in various sectors across different countries. The implementation of CE in built-environm ent has
vast benefits owing to the potential to reduce the ecological & carbon footprint of the construction industry.
Numerous research articles have been published on the potential of CE in the built environment. This article aims to present a review of the evolution of literature and the development of theory in the given field.
Bibliometric review on the topic is done using R software. For content analysis, the authors have analyzed
the literature in the following subcategories – interpretation of CE in built-environm ent, CE business models, CE enablers, end-of-life management, circular building materials, material stocks, and environmental
impact. The development of the theory of CE in the built-environm ent is analyzed by categorizing the conducted researches into various stages of theory – observation, categorization and association along with understanding if the research has been original, replicated or validated in its form. The article further points
out the gaps in the literature and future scope using theory development models and suggests research implications for academicians and practitioners.

Inter- and intra-organizational safety management practice differences in the construction industry
تفاوت مدیریت عملکرد ایمنی بین سازمانی و درون سازمانی در صنعت ساخت و ساز -2020 This work investigates safety management practice differences in the interorganizational manner between
general contractors and subcontractors as well as in the intraorganizational manner between head offices and
construction sites. While head offices of general contractors determine the safety performance target for a
project, the actual performance is determined by how employees of general contractors and subcontractors
working at construction sites manage the safety management practices together. This study presumes that there
exist safety management practice gaps within an organization and between organizations, which are probably
the reasons for stagnant safety performance improvement in the construction industry. Using 341 survey data
items collected from general contractor and subcontractor companies’ employees working in head offices and at
construction sites, chi-square tests for one safety management practice and two-way analysis of variance
(ANOVA) tests for three different safety management practices were conducted. It was found that there is no
statistically significant safety management practice difference between general contractors and subcontractors.
However, regarding the workplace, four safety management practices consistently showed that head offices have
higher mean values than construction sites and that the differences are statistically significant. The two-way
ANOVA test results also revealed statistically significant interaction effects. The results contribute to justifying
the need for a more holistic and comprehensive approach when establishing a safety management strategy. Keywords: Safety management practice | Company-level safety management | Project-level safety management | Safety |

Factor-based big data and predictive analytics capability assessment tool for the construction industry
داده های بزرگ مبتنی بر فاکتور و ابزار ارزیابی قابلیت تحلیلی پیش بینی کننده برای صنعت ساخت و ساز-2020 Big data and predictive analytics have huge potential to create value to the construction industry. However,
there is a lack of benchmarking system to evaluate organizations competency to adopt big data and predictive
analytics. Hence, this study aims to develop a big data and predictive analytics capability assessment tool that
can measure construction organizations capability in big data and predictive analytics implementation and that
also highlights strengths and weaknesses of the organization to provide a benchmark in the process of big data
and predictive analytics implementation. 21 determinants were identified and assessed in sense of their impacts
on an organizations capability to implement big data and predictive analytics. These determinants were categorized
into five determinant groups and assigned weights, to form the basis for the big data and predictive
analytics capability assessment tool. The developed tool was then validated with four construction organizations
to reflect their big data and predictive analytic capability levels, strengths and weaknesses. The findings of this
study contribute to knowledge and practice by identifying the determinants impacting construction organizations
capability to adopt big data and predictive analytics and in the development of a computerized assessment
tool which also serves as a benchmarking tool for construction organizations in the implementation of big data
and predictive analytics. Keywords: Big data | Predictive analytics | Capability assessment tool | Construction industry | Organization capability |

Integrated Digital Delivery: Implementation status and project performance in the Singapore construction industry
تحویل یکپارچه دیجیتال: وضعیت پیاده سازی و عملکرد پروژه در صنعت ساخت سنگاپور-2020 Integrated Digital Delivery (IDD) was launched to transform the approach to construction through the
implementation of digital technologies. Whilst technologies have the potential to improve project performance,
there are limited studies on IDD in the context of the construction industry. Hence, this study
investigates the level of IDD implementation and the perceived improvements on project performance.
Based on the literature review, 32 digital and cloud technologies have been identified and formed the
basis for a structured survey questionnaire, which was distributed to target respondents covering the
major roles of the construction industry in Singapore. The responses were analyzed to determine the
existing level of IDD implementation and the perceived improvements in project performance
contributed by IDD implementation, followed by post-survey interviews to validate the findings from the
survey. The study found that only 38.71% of the organizations implemented IDD technologies in all four
IDD phases. BIM, prefabrication, BIM-to-field mobile applications and building management system were
the most frequently used technologies in the four phases respectively. The respondents largely agreed
that IDD implementation improved overall project, project cost, project quality and project schedule
performance. The findings from this study provide better understanding of the existing level of IDD
implementation and the perceived improvements in project performance, serving as a starting point for
future research on increasing IDD implementation. Keywords: Integrated digital delivery | Construction industry | Improvements in project performance | Implementation status | Singapore |

Public and private blockchain in construction business process and information integration
بلاکچین دولتی و خصوصی در فرآیند تجارت ساخت و ساز و ادغام اطلاعات-2020 Blockchain as an emergent decentralized digital technology has been widely explored in many sectors to remedy the deficiencies of centralized solutions It has been recognized that blockchain technology has great potential to facilitate business activities spanning the whole life cycle of a building project in the construction industry, such as better communication or understanding, documents sharing, stage transition and quality endorsement. A comprehensive review of the literature regarding the application of blockchain in the construction domain found that there are few studies and applications of blockchain in construction practices, and most of the current research involves qualitative studies only. In this paper, we aim to explore the feasibility of applying both public blockchain and private blockchain technologies in the construction industry using two industry cases. Two business process cases (i.e., Case 1 and Case 2) were selected and used to drive the blockchain-based software system architecture design. The proposed architectures were demonstrated using Hyperledger Fabric (a private, permissioned and open source blockchain platform) and Ethereum (a public blockchain platform) respectively, to reflect the different requirements of the two use cases. This pilot study also illustrates the process, benefits, and challenges of adopting private and public blockchain technologies in construction domain. This research provides insights to researchers and practitioners regarding the adoption of blockchain technology, especially in construction industry. Blockchain Technology: Is it Hype or Real in the Construction Industry?
فناوری بلاکچین: آیا اعتیاد به مواد مخدر در صنعت ساخت و ساز واقعی است؟-2020 The dawn of the 21st century has seen the advent of many technologies targeting commercial
and financial sectors. These include Big Data, Internet of Things and FinTechs such as
blockchain. Blockchain is a type of a distributed database that is used to replicate, share, and
synchronise data spread across different geographical locations such as multiple sites,
countries, or organisations. The main property of blockchain is that there is no central
administrator or centralised data storage mechanism. Consensus algorithms govern the peerto-
peer decentralised network. Numerous benefits and applications of blockchains have
resulted in it becoming popular among a broad spectrum of businesses, but is it the case in the
construction industry? Given, the backward nature of the construction industry in
digitalisation and its reticence to change it becomes important to analyse the potential impact
of Blockchains as a potential disruptive technology.
Although there exists a significant research gap and the potential possibility to test
blockchain in the construction sector, the construction industry is historically reported as the
second lowest sector to have adopted information technology. This leads to a conundrum
whether blockchain is a pure technological hype or whether there is a real potential
application in construction. The paper is aimed at critically analysing the application potential
of blockchains in construction through a use case analysis and comprehensive literature
review to resolve whether it is pure hype or real. The exploration revealed that due to the
exponential uses of blockchain, investments involved, and a number of start-up businesses
contributing to Industry 4.0, blockchain indeed has a credible potential in the construction
industry. Keywords: Blockchain | Smart Contracts | Blockchain Applications | Construction Industry | Industry 4.0 | Digitalisation |

Knowledge transfer for occupational health and safety: Cultivating health and safety learning culture in construction firms
انتقال دانش برای بهداشت و ایمنی شغلی: پرورش فرهنگ یادگیری بهداشت و ایمنی در شرکتهای ساختمانی-2020 Within the last decades the incidence of workspace injuries and fatalities in the UK construction industry has
declined markedly following the developments in occupational health and safety (OHS) management systems.
However, safety statistics have reached a plateau and actions for further improvement of OHS management
systems are called for. OHS is a form of organizational expertise that has both tacit and explicit
dimensions and is situated in the ongoing practices. There is a need for institutionalization and for the
transfer of knowledge across and along construction supply chains to reduce OHS risks and facilitate cultural
change. The focus of this article is the factors that facilitate OHS knowledge transfer in and between organizations
involved in construction projects. An interpretative methodology is used in this research to
embrace tacit aspects of knowledge transfer and application. Thematic analysis is supported by a cognitive
mapping technique that allows understanding of interrelationships among the concepts expressed by the
respondents. This paper demonstrates inconsistency in OHS practices in construction organizations and
highlights the importance of cultivating a positive safety culture to encourage transfer of lessons learnt from
good practices, incidents, near misses and failures between projects, from projects to programmes and across
supply chains. Governmental health and safety regulations, norms and guidelines do not include all possible
safety issues specific to different working environments and tied to work contexts. The OHS system should
encourage employees to report near misses, incidents and failures in a ‘no-blame’ context and to take appropriate
actions. This research provides foundation for construction project practitioners to adopt more
socially oriented approaches towards promoting learning-rich organizational contexts to overcome variation
in the OHS and move beyond the current plateau reached in safety statistics.. Keywords: Occupational health and safety | Safety culture | Knowledge transfer | Knowledge management | Organizational learning | Construction industry |
