1 Operations management research grounded in the resource-based view: A meta-analysis

The resource-based view (RBV) has long been adopted in strategic management research, but its use in opera- tions management (OM) research is relatively new. Many empirical studies based upon RBV have investigated OM functions/capabilities and their impacts on business performance. Despite the considerable amount of research that has been conducted, there is no meta-analysis of application of RBV in the OM field. Hitt et al. (2016) reviewed the use and application of RBV in OM, based upon studies published in nine elite OM journals in the period 2007–2013. We take a meta-analytic approach to statistically combine and critically analyse application of RBV in OM over the period 2007–2020. We identify three primary operational functions/capabilities, namely flexibility, supply chain integration, and organizational capability, that have a positive impact on business performance in general, and on competitive performance, financial performance, and operational performance in particular. This study contributes to the literature on application RBV in OM and provides future research directions.

3 Exploring the dynamics of project management office and portfolio management co-evolution: A routine lens

This paper addresses a recurrent topic of organizational project management (OPM) research: Project Management Offices (PMOs) are perceived to be instrumental in implementing strategy through portfolios of projects, but empirical evidence also shows that PMOs are often short-lived and their value is hard to quantify. We argue that an explanation may lie in the processes of co-evolution that PMOs undergo over time in interaction with organizational capabilities and context. We adopt an innovative research frame in the context of OPM research, using process theories of change and routines as a lens to investigate the co-evolution of PMO and Portfolio Management. A conceptual framework is suggested and we use an empirical case study to test and refine it. We discuss the theoretical implications of the findings and highlight the contributions made in supporting, adding, articulating and contrasting extant literature. We conclude the paper underlining paths for further researches.

4 Examining the influence of organizational capability in innovative business operations and the mediation of profitability on customer satisfaction: An application in intermodal transport operators in Taiwan

Implementation of business model innovation to meet customer needs and market requirements is closely linked with organizational capability. However, the literature remains unclear about the influence of different categories of organizational capability on performance outcomes. While organiza- tional capability enhancement may generate higher revenues, it may also incur higher operating costs. As profitability comprises both cost and revenue components, it is imperative that profitability be taken into consideration in exploring the relationship between organizational capability and customer satisfaction. Using empirical data collected from intermodal transport operators in Taiwan, the relation- ship between organizational capability and customer satisfaction as well as the mediating role of profitability in this relationship is examined. Our findings suggest that organizational capability is positively associated with firm profitability and customer satisfaction. The findings suggest that profitability mediates the relationship between organization capability and customer satisfaction.& 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

5 Enhancing engineer–procure–construct project performance by partnering in international markets: Perspective from Chinese construction companies

The engineer–procure–construct (EPC) approach has been increasingly adopted in international markets, in which contractors need to have adequate capabilities in effectively dealing with a wide range of risks in a complex environment that consists of various stakeholders. Many researchers have embraced the strategy of partnering to integrate diverse project delivery activities by meeting the needs of all project participants. However, limited research has addressed the cause–effect relationships among partnering, risk management, and organizational capability on how performance improvements can be generated from them on a holistic view. This study systematically investigates the causal relationships among these themes by establishing and testing a conceptual model. With the support of data collected from Chinese contractors with experience in delivering EPC projects by questionnaire, interview, and a case study, the results provide empirical evidences on contractors' partnering application degree, strength, and weakness of organizational capabilities, overall picture of risk management, and project performance level, which form a sound basis for contractors' decision making during project implementation. This study further reveals that partnering can not only directly facilitate organizational capability and risk management but also exert its influence on risk management through enhanced organizational capability, thereby improving project performance. The above insights suggest research and practical emphases on combining risk management with partnering principles to assist in both intra- and inter-organizational activities, and contractors' appropriate linking with involved stakeholders to obtain necessary resources and effectively transfer them for successfully delivering international EPC projects.© 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
