1 Asymmetric solutions to asymmetric information problems
This paper studies markets plagued with asymmetric information on the quality of traded goods. In Akerlof’s setting, sellers are better informed than buyers. In contrast, we examine cases where buyers are better informed than sellers. This creates an inverse adverse selection problem: the market tends to disappear from the bottom rather than from the top. In contrast to the traditional model, it is the high-value goods (gems) that are traded on the market, rather than the low-value goods (lemons). We refer to this asymmetric information scenario as the “market for gems.” We investigate the consequences of this undisclosed knowledge of hidden qualities — which we refer to as inverse adverse selection — and the reasons why legal theorists have given this form of asymmetric information substantially less consideration. Conventional legal and contractual solutions to the lemons problem are often ineffective in the gems case: the uninformed buyer in a traditional market for lemons experiences the quality of the good he purchased; in a market for gems, instead, the uninformed seller may never know the quality of the good that he sold. We study three alternative solutions to the gems problem — auctions, suppression of information, and inverse warranties — and identify the condition under which each of them is feasible. We then show how the theory sheds light on real-life gems problems arising in the multi-million dollar transactions involving soccer players, artworks, M&As, Hollywood movies, and diamonds.

2 Managing bite risk for divers in the context of shark feeding ecotourism: A case study from French Polynesia (Eastern Pacific)
Shark-based ecotourism has been recently expanding around the world. Provisioning sharks, however, is not without risk and accidental bites on humans are regularly reported. Such events may jeopardise the shark ecotourism industry and local economies. Through a case study from French Polynesia, I investigated whether changes in feeding practices of lemon sharks between the early 1990s and 2013 are related to recent accidental bites of divers. Hand-feeding, ‘smelling’ and surface feeding facilitated the development of agonistic behaviour in sharks, which resulted in accidental bites. The level of interaction between sharks and humans appears to be the most important driver for analysing bite-risk. This paper presents the very first framework for risk-analysis and will allow managers to better manage the risk associated with current practices in shark-feeding around the world. The paper also provides technical guidelines for the design of adequate legal frameworks that will support any sustainable shark feeding operation.

3 Combined data mining/NIR spectroscopy for purity assessment of lime juice
This paper reports the data mining study on the NIR spectrum of lime juice samples to determine their purity (natural or synthetic). NIR spectra for 72 pure and synthetic lime juice samples were recorded in reflectance mode. Sample outliers were removed using PCA analysis. Different data mining techniques for feature selection (Genetic Algorithm (GA)) and classification (including the radial basis function (RBF) network, Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Random Forest (RF) tree) were employed. Based on the results, SVM proved to be the most accurate classifier as it achieved the highest accuracy (97%) using the raw spectrum information. The classifier accuracy dropped to 93% when selected feature vector by GA search method was applied as classifier input. It can be concluded that some relevant features which produce good performance with the SVM classifier are removed by feature selection. Also, reduced spec tra using PCA do not show acceptable performance (total accuracy of 66% by RBFNN), which indicates that dimensional reduction methods such as PCA do not always lead to more accurate results. These findings demonstrate the potential of data mining combination with near-infrared spectroscopy for monitoring lime juice quality in terms of natural or synthetic nature.

4 Genetic variants of the DNA repair genes from Exome Aggregation Consortium (EXAC) database: significance in cancer
DNA repair pathway is a primary defense system that eliminates wide varieties of DNA damage. Any deficiencies in them are likely to cause the chromosomal instability that leads to cell malfunctioning and tumorigenesis. Genetic polymorphisms in DNA repair genes have demonstrated a significant association with cancer risk. Our study attempts to give a glimpse of the overall scenario of the germline polymorphisms in the DNA repair genes by taking into account of the Exome Aggregation Consortium (ExAC) database as well as the Human Gene Mutation Database (HGMD) for evaluating the disease link, particularly in cancer. It has been found that ExAC DNA repair dataset (which consists of 228 DNA repair genes) comprises 30.4% missense, 12.5% dbSNP reported and 3.2% ClinVar significant variants. 27% of all the missense variants has the deleterious SIFT score of 0.00 and 6% variants carrying the most damaging Polyphen-2 score of 1.00, thus affecting the protein structure and function. However, as per HGMD, only a fraction (1.2%) of ExAC DNA repair variants was found to be cancer-related, indicating remaining variants reported in both the databases to be further analyzed. This, in turn, may provide an increased spectrum of the reported cancer linked variants in the DNA repair genes present in ExAC database. Moreover, further in silico functional assay of the identified vital cancer-associated variants, which is essential to get their actual biological significance, may shed some lights in the field of targeted drug development in near future.

7 The management and outcomes of fingolimod first dose cardiac monitoring in UK patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis
Background: Patients initiated on Gilenya (fingolimod) require cardiovascular monitoring for 6 h after the first dose. Novartis has engaged an independent provider (Regent's Park Heart Clinics [RPHC]) to provide a first dose observation (FDO) service to UK neurologists. Objectives: To describe routinely-documented clinical observations (heart rate [HR], blood pressure [BP], cardiac rhythm [CR]) and outcomes from the RPHC fingolimod FDO service. Methods: Pseudonymised data (clinical observations pre-dose and for 6 h after the first dose and any requirement for extended monitoring) were collected retrospectively from RPHC records for the first 850 RPHC FDO episodes (undertaken Jul-2012 to Jan-2015). All episodes involved patients with relapsing- remitting MS who were initiated on fingolimod in routine National Health Service (NHS) clinical practice. Results: In 78% of FDO episodes the patient was female. Mean age at date of episode was 40.1 years. Mean HR was 72.7 bpm (beats per minute) pre-dose, 64.3 bpm at 5 h (the lowest recorded HR) and 66.1 bpm at 6 h post-dose. New-onset heart block was observed in 2% of episodes (1.5% first-degree; 0.5% second- degree). The patient was discharged at 6 hours post-dose in 97% of episodes and required extended monitoring in 3%. In 5 episodes overnight monitoring was required. There were no episodes in which the patient required pharmacological intervention or temporary cardiac pacing. Conclusions: In this real-world UK population fingolimod initiation was predominantly uneventful; clinical observations were similar to previous clinical trials.& 2015 Published by Elsevier B.V.
