A knowledge-intensive adaptive business process management framework
2021 Business process management has been the driving force of optimization and operational efficiency for
companies until now, but the digitalization era we have been experiencing requires businesses to be
agile and responsive as well. In order to be a part of this digital transformation, delivering new levels
of automation-fueled agility through digitalization of BPM itself is required. However, the automation
of BPM cannot be achieved by solely focusing on process space and classical planning techniques. It
requires a holistic approach that also captures the social aspects of the business environment, such as
corporate strategies, organization policies, negotiations, and cooperation. For this purpose, we combine
BPM, knowledge-intensive systems and intelligent agent technologies, and yield one consolidated
intelligent business process management framework, namely agileBPM, that governs the entire BPM
life-cycle. Accordingly, agileBPM proposes a modeling methodology to semantically capture the
business interests, enterprise environment and process space in accordance with the agent-oriented
software engineering paradigm. The proposed agent-based process execution environment provides
cognitive capabilities (such as goal-driven planning, norm compliance, knowledge-driven actions, and
dynamic cooperation) on top of the developed business models to support knowledge workers’ multicriteria decision making tasks. The context awareness and exception handling capabilities of the
proposed approach have been presented with experimental studies. Through comparative evaluations,
it is shown that agileBPM is the most comprehensive knowledge-intensive process management
solution.

Testing an instrument to measure the BPMS-KM Support model
BPMS-KM-2021 BPMS (Business Process Management System) represents a type of software that automates the organizational
processes looking for efficiency. Since the knowledge of organizations lies in their processes, it seems probable
that a BPMS can be used to manage the knowledge applied in these processes. Through the BPMS-KM Support
Model, this study aims to determine the reliability and validity of a 65-item instrument to measure the utility and
the use of a BPMS for knowledge management (KM). A questionnaire was sent to 242 BPMS users and to
determine its validity, a factorial analysis was conducted. The results showed that the measuring instrument is
trustworthy and valid. It represents implications for research, since it provides an instrument validated for
research on the success of a BPMS for KM. There would also be practical implications, since managers can
evaluate the use of BPMS, in addition to automating processes to manage knowledge. keywords: مدیریت فرآیند کسب و کار | مدیریت دانش | تجزیه و تحلیل فاکتوریل | ابزار اندازه گیری | اعتبار سنجی مقیاس | Business Process Management | Knowledge management | Factorial analysis | Measuring instrument | Scale validation |

Customer-centric prioritization of process improvement projects
2020 Today, customers can conveniently compare products and decide how to interact with companies. With customer
centricity becoming an important success factor, companies must drive customer satisfaction not only
through excellent products but also through customer-centric processes. As many companies face an abundance
of action possibilities, fast-changing customer needs, and scarce resources, guidance regarding the customercentric
prioritization of process improvement projects is in high need. As existing approaches predominantly
focus on process efficiency, we propose a decision model that accounts for the effects of process improvement on
customer centricity in line with justificatory knowledge on value-based process decision-making, project portfolio
selection, and the measurement of customer satisfaction. When building the decision model, we adopted
the design science paradigm and used multi-criteria decision analysis as well as normative analytical modeling as
research methods. We evaluated the model by discussing it with practitioners, by building a software prototype,
and by applying it at a German insurance company. Overall, our research extends the prescriptive knowledge on
process prioritization and customer process management. Keywords: Business process management | Business process improvement | Process decision-making | Customer centricity | Project portfolio selection | Kano model |

Understanding complex process models by abstracting infrequent behavior
درک مدلهای پیچیده فرآیند با انتزاع رفتارهای غیرمعمول-2020 Process mining has become very popular in the last years as a way to analyze the behavior of an organization by offering techniques to discover, monitor and enhance real processes. A key point in process mining is to discover understandable process models. To achieve this goal in complex processes, several simplification techniques have been proposed, from the structural simplification of the model to the simplification of the log to discover simpler process models. However, obtaining a comprehensible model explaining the behavior of unstructured large processes (for instance containing hundreds of activities) is still an open challenge. In this paper, we introduce UBeA, a novel technique to abstract non-core behavior from a process model. We also present IBeA, a specific implementation of this proposal to simplify process models by abstracting infrequent behavior, using a frequent behavior extraction algorithm to detect the core behavior. IBeA has been validated with more than 10 complex real processes, most of them from the Business Process Intelligence Challenge (BPIC), showing that it simplifies the process obtaining a better process model than other simplification techniques.© 2020 Elsevier B.V. Runtime verification for business processes utilizing the Bitcoin blockchain
2019 The usage of process choreographies and decentralized Business Process Management Systems has been
named as an alternative to centralized business process orchestration. In choreographies, control over a
process instance is shared between independent parties, and no party has full control or knowledge during
process runtime. Nevertheless, it is necessary to monitor and verify process instances during runtime for
purposes of documentation, accounting, or compensation.
To achieve business process runtime verification, this work explores the suitability of the Bitcoin
blockchain to create a novel solution for choreographies. The resulting approach is realized in a fullyfunctional
software prototype. This software solution is evaluated in a qualitative comparison. Findings
show that our blockchain-based approach enables a seamless execution monitoring and verification
of choreographies, while at the same time preserving anonymity and independence of the process
participants. Furthermore, the prototype is evaluated in a performance analysis Keywords: Choreographies | Blockchain | Business process management | Runtime verification |

Knowledge Management – The Foundation for a Successful Business Process Management
2018 In today’s dynamic business environment, organizations need up-to-date knowledge to execute their business in the best way.
Through the ongoing digitalization and linked communities, companies and businesses, changing parameters as well as varying
business framework conditions must be analyzed fast as possible to optimize the processes and gain the best direction for the own
company. Therefore, organization use Business Process Management (BPM) to model and manage the existing processes. To
perform BPM and optimize processes, data and information there have to be developed a knowledge inventory regarding all
processes in order to model the organizational processes together with the required resources. In the following paper, this
necessary knowledge process will be analyzed as foundation to perform BPM regarding the known BPM Trends. In addition, the
relevance of digitalization will be matched to the Knowledge Management and BPM approach to underline the importance of the
correct data and information as BPM infrastructure. Therefore, the mandatory terms will be defined and described theoretically.
This literature research will be the starting basis for the approach and following scientific research. To evaluate the KM-BPM
Model a survey with different companies has been developed. The research results will contributed to a combined Knowledge
and BPM approach for the application in the business in times of digitalization.

Designing like a Pro: The automated composition of workflow activities
2016 To design a workflow process that is efficient, meaningful, and understandable it is important to properly
consider how to compose the activities it will consist of. In this paper, guidelines are presented for this
exact purpose. These focus on the elementary data-processing steps that are at the core of a workflow
process. The guidelines help to determine the relative importance of these data-processing steps as well
as their relatedness, such that activities can be composed in a fully automated manner. We implemented
this approach in freely available software. A thorough evaluation that incorporates real-life workflow
designs indicates that the use of these guidelines leads to activities that closely resemble those designed
by experienced modelers. As such, the proposed guidelines provide a proper and automated alternative
to what is otherwise a complex and time-consuming task.
