Effect of REDDþ projects on local livelihood assets in Keo Seima and Oddar Meanchey, Cambodia
تأثیر پروژه های REDDþ بر دارایی های معیشت محلی در Keo Seima و Oddar Meanchey ، کامبوج-2020 Climate-change mitigation projects are expected to improve local livelihoods in targeted areas. Several REDDþ
projects aimed at reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, conserving and enhancing forest
carbon stocks, and sustainably managing forests have been implemented in Cambodia but few studies have
examined the effects on local livelihoods before and during project implementation. Our study applies a sustainable
livelihood framework to assess the livelihood assets of local communities in the Oddar Meanchey and
Keo Seima REDDþ project sites in Cambodia before and during project implementation. Five capital assets,
namely natural, physical, human, financial, and social capital, are assessed and scored on a 1-to-5 Likert scale.
Data analysis collected through 252 interviews in Oddar Meanchey and Keo Seima reveals a slight increase in
livelihood assets in both sites from project validation to implementation. Generally, the mean scores for local
livelihood assets increased from 2.81 0.07 (is followed by the standard error) and 2.66 0.06 to 3.07 0.09
and 3.06 0.08 in Oddar Meanchey and Keo Seima, respectively. Nevertheless, natural capital assets sharply
declined from 3.50 and 3.32 to 2.09 and 2.25, respectively. Respondents mainly blamed illegal logging for the
decline, suggesting that strict patrolling and enforcement must be implemented. Furthermore, the scarcity of
carbon-credit buyers and the projects’ inability to generate carbon-based revenues has led to dissatisfaction
among local communities, inducing avoidable illegal activities in pursuit of short-term benefits. A financial
mechanism to ensure sufficient and sustained financial support regardless of carbon-market volatility is urgently
needed. When salient science is not enough to advance climate change adaptation: Lessons from Brazil and Australia
وقتی علم برجسته برای پیشبرد سازگاری با تغییرات آب و هوا کافی نیست: درسهایی از برزیل و استرالیا-2020 Increased social and environmental vulnerability to extreme climatic events and inherent aggravation of environmental
and social problems has placed climate change adaptation as an urgent challenge for decisionmakers.
Understanding and using climate change information to advance the implementation of climate-friendly
policies further compounds this challenge. A rich scholarly literature focusing on climate change adaptation
endorses that investing in mechanisms that narrow the gap between climate change information production and
its use is crucial to increase adaptive capacity. Based on this assumption, this paper investigates the extent to
which two collaborative projects that functioned as boundary organisations in Brazil (CiAdapta project) and
Australia (Climate Change Adaptation for Natural Resource Management in East Coast Australia) increased
access to information, and enabled the continual and continuous usefulness of produced knowledge for climate
change adaptation. Considering the distinction between usable and useful information, we applied six criteria to
guide the data analysis and extract key lessons from each project. Our findings confirm that face-to-face interactions
are more likely to result in research having the societal impact that is being increasingly required by
research and funding bodies. Our findings also indicate that two key systemic changes are critical for the longterm
influence of boundary organisations for advancing climate change adaptation. These include changes to the
science, knowledge production process; and shift in the political culture. Keywords: Boundary organisation | Cities | Natural resources management | Knowledge co-production | Adaptive capacity |

Understanding the historical institutional context by using content analysis of local policy and planning documents: Assessing the interactions between tourism and landscape on the Island of Terschelling in the Wadden Sea Region
درک زمینه سازمانی تاریخی با استفاده از تحلیل محتوایی سیاست محلی و اسناد برنامه ریزی: بررسی برهم کنش های بین گردشگری و منظره جزیره ترسچلینگ در منطقه دریایی وادان-2018 Content analysis is a valuable tool to identify changes in policy. By analysing historical documents, policymakers and planners can improve their understanding of the institutional context in which decisions were made. Using the Island of Terschelling in the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden region of the northern Netherlands as our example, we show how content analysis can be used to understand the historical institutional context. We analysed policy and planning documents from 1945 to 2015, which was supported by semi-structured interviews with local key informants. We specifically considered tourism–landscape interactions. Although there were fluctuations between socio-economic development and nature protection over time, we found that there has been an increasing awareness of synergy. Synergies are crucial to balance nature protection with socio-economic development and to increase the social-ecological resilience of regions. We conclude that, by using content analysis, local documents can be used as a proxy for the institutional context.

How would big data support societal development and environmental sustainability? Insights and practices
چگونه داده های بزرگ از توسعه اجتماعی و پایداری زیست محیطی حمایت می کنند؟ بینش و شیوه های-2017 The theme of this Special Volume (SV) focuses on improving natural resource management and human
health to ensure sustainable societal development. Natural resources have been exploited unduly
regardless of the consequences, which has resulted in inappropriate management natural resources and
has caused severe environmental degradation. Contributions in this SV addressed improved environ
mental management, utilization, and allocation of natural resources; evaluation of sustainable natural
resource management; pollution prevention and treatment; and evaluation and suggestions for
improved natural resource-related policies. The authors presented an inspiring panorama of the ini
tiatives that have been developed throughout the world for sustainable natural resource management
and improve societal development. Theoretically, new approaches to bridge the gaps between the
economic development and environmental protection were increasingly dominant. Empirically, many of
the papers provided case studies of regions in China and other regions. The authorship reflected growing
collaboration between researchers from many different countries or universities. While the great di
versity of contributions on the topic reflected the wealth of insights generated on the topic in recent
years, there is much more that must be done to achieve societal sustainability in natural resource
management.
