1 Sustainable supply chain management considering technology investments and government intervention

With the aggravation of the global environmental crisis, consumers are keen to use green products, and enterprises are more committed to technology investment and innovation to meet consumers’ green preferences. This study considers a supply chain system composed of one manufacturer and one retailer, where the manufacturer invests in green emission reduction technology (GERT) to reduce carbon emissions, and the retailer invests in information disclosure technology to transmit the higher greenness quality of products to consumers. We discuss the technology investment decisions and cooperation strategies between the manufacturer and the retailer, as well as the impacts of government regulations on supply chain members’ decisions. We consider three scenarios: decentralized, government intervention, and cost sharing and government intervention. We derive the optimal technology investment decisions of the manufacturer and retailer. In addition, we identify the conditions for the manufacturer to subsidize the retailer’s disclosure technology costs. The results show that a higher emission reduction subsidy encourages GERT investments and increases supply chain members’ profits. However, when the government sets a higher emission reduction standard, the subsidy neither increases the emission reduction nor benefits the retailer, and hurts the manufacturer’s profit. We also demonstrate that when there is cost sharing and government intervention, emission reduction and supply chain performance are always better than in the other scenarios.

2 Purchasings contribution to supply chain emission reduction

Does environmental purchasing and supplier management (EPSM) help to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the supply chain and, thereby, mitigate climate change? And, if so, under which conditions? Taking these two questions as a starting point, we hypothesize that heightened environmental protection efforts targeting the upstream value chain should lead to a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the buying companies’ supply chain. We continue to delineate three contingency factors that might affect the relationship between EPSM and supply chain GHG emissions: The power of the buying firm over supply chain partners, prior experience in EPSM, and materiality of environmental supply chain management in a certain industry. We collect longitudinal data from 260 companies and analyze them using hybrid panel data analysis. We find that the increase of EPSM leads to a significant reduction of the GHG emission intensity of buying firms’ supply chains and that this reduction is stronger for companies operating in industries where emission management is more material.

3 A social participatory allocation network method with partial relations of alternatives and its application in sustainable food supply chain selection

Choosing a good food supply chain is helpful for realizing the coordination of economic benefits and environmental optimization, so as to promote the sustainable development of the society. To solve such a problem, we need to ensure the accuracy of the original information and the validity of the aggregated information. However, experts may not be able to give professional evaluations in some aspects, and a simple ranking of alternatives cannot accurately reflect the relations between alternatives. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a comprehensive method integrating the social participatory allocation network (SPAN) and ORESTE methods under the q-rung orthopair fuzzy environment. To better deal with the imprecise and uncertain information, the q-rung orthopair fuzzy set is adopted in this study to represent decision-makers’ opinions. The delegate mechanism of the SPAN method is introduced to calculate the weights of experts, which make the assessments of alternatives credible. The ORESTE method is used to explore the relations between alternatives in detail. The preference function is used to deal with the case where the data is not ordinal. Finally, a case study concerning the selection of sustainable food supply chains is presented to verify the applicability of the proposed method.© 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

4 The impact of supply chain network structure on relationship management strategies: An empirical investigation of sustainability practices in retailers

The implementation of sustainability practices in today’s complex supply chain network (SCN) has been a great challenge for focal firms. To establish a sustainable SCN, understanding is needed about how focal firms’ decision-making processes can be affected by the extent to which they are embedded within a wider stakeholder network. Despite the increasing amount of research in sustainable supply chain management (SSCM), the way (why and how) that focal firms and their SCN actors interact in terms of sustainability practices has not been thoroughly explored. This paper investigates the impact of SCN structure on focal firms’ relationship management strategies (RMS) and identifies strategies that may be employed to implement sustainability practices throughout the SCN. A web-based survey was undertaken to collect data from a sample of 66 Australian food manufacturers and suppliers within two large retailers’ SCNs. The paper’s constructs were validated via exploratory factor analysis, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis was conducted to test the hypotheses. Five factors conceptualizing the SCN structure were identified (transparency, power, supplier dependency, buyer dependency, and distance) to determine the impact of the SCN structure on four RMS (non-compliance, transactional, dictatorial, and collaborative). Results show different relationships between each factor and RMS, thereby providing new insights into the implementation of sustainability practices in the SCN. The findings may assist managers to determine a balance in allocating resources to manage sustainability practices within their firms’ SCNs. Developing sustainable supply chain management: The interplay of institutional pressures and sustainability capabilities-2021
With growing concern about social impacts and environmental protection, sustainable supply chain management has become a focus of interest for business practitioners and academics. This study examines the driving forces of sustainable supply chain management practices. Drowning on institutional theory and the resource-based view, this study empirically examines the driving effects of institutional pressures (in terms of governance pressure, customer pressure, and competitive pressure) and internal sustainability capabilities (in terms of top management leadership and technical capability) and their interactions on sustainable supply chain management practices. Based on empirical analysis of data from 172 Chinese firms, the findings reveal that institutional pressures and sustainability capabilities simultaneously and jointly motivate the implementation of sustainable supply chain management practices. Interestingly, the interactions of technical capabilities with governance pressures and customer pressures significantly and negatively influence sustainable supply chain management practice adoption, while the interactions of top management leadership with competitive pressures positively affect the pursuit of sustainable supply chain management practices.© 2021 Institution of Chemical Engineers. 6 Blockchain and sustainable supply chain management in developing countries

Theoretical, empirical and anecdotal evidence suggests that there are more violations of sustainability principles in supply chains in developing countries than in developed countries. Recent research has demonstrated that blockchain can play an important role in promoting supply chain sustainability. In this paper we argue that blockchain’s characteristics are especially important for enforcing sustainability standards in developing coun- tries. We analyze multiple case studies of blockchain projects implemented in supply chains in developing countries to assess product quality, environmental accounting and social impact measurement. We have developed seven propositions, which describe how blockchain can help address a number of challenges various stakeholders face in promoting sustainable supply chains in developing countries. The challenges that the propositions deal with include those associated with an unfavorable institutional environment, high costs, technological limitations, unequal power distribution among supply chain partners and porosity and opacity of value delivery networks.

7 A framework for sustainable management of the platform service supply chain: An empirical study of the logistics sector in China

Platforms have become an effective means of innovation in the logistics sector. However, not all platform-based business models become a success. This research investigates how a platform strategy can lead to a sustainable managed platform service supply chain. Based on analysis of data collected within the logistics sectors in China, the research results propose a structural mapping of a platform service supply chain, which differs from the traditional service supply chain structure. This research develops a sustainable management framework for the platform service supply chain, including three key elements: mutual facilitation between platform and business ecosystem; strategic alignment among the structural elements; and a sustainable element including value co- creation, co-opetition and dynamic configuration. The paper also provides a summary of practical implications to guide practitioners in building a successful platform service supply chain and enacting effective management strategies.

8 Dynamic capabilities in sustainable supply chain management: An inter-temporal comparison of the food and automotive industries

This paper seeks to enrich the theoretical debate on dynamic capabilities (DCs) in sustainable supply chain management (SSCM). By extending Beske et al.’s (2014) study, a systematic literature review was conducted, and articles matching our inclusion criteria were analyzed from 2002 to 2018. Yet, two major additions are made. For the first time, two distinctive sectors, i.e., the food and automotive industry, are compared. Furthermore, a temporal perspective is provided by comparing two time periods (2002–2013 and 2014–2018) based on content as well as quantitative contingency analyses.The results for the food sector indicate a shift from “standards and certifications,” a central construct within the 2002–2013 sample, to proactive strategies aiming for the integration of stakeholders in the 2014–2018 sample. Similarly, the findings of the automotive industry indicate a shift from monitoring to joint development and knowledge management. Based on our comparison, the SSCM debate in the food industry appears more diverse in terms of practices and capabilities employed. In contrast, the analysis for the automotive industry indicates a focus on SCM elements instead of a comprehensive SSCM view. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to apply an intra- and inter-sectoral analysis combined with a temporal analysis within the SSCM domain. This provides evidence that the methodological approach taken allows distinguishing among both time periods and industries.

"مسئولیت گسترده تولید کننده" (EPR) از دهه 2000، به عنوان ستون فقرات مدیریت چرخه عمر محصول در اروپا شده است. متاسفانه، اجرای "مسئولیت گسترده تولید کننده" چندین اثر بر روی زنجیره تامین دارد و بنابراین پیامدهای آن همیشه به راحتی قابل مدیریت نیست. اگرچه چندین مطالعه به بررسی مثالهای مختلفی درداخل اروپا پرداخته اند، اما عوامل تعیین کننده سومندی مدیریت "مسئولیت گسترده تولید کننده" هنوزهم کاملا" درک نشده است. این تحقیق به دنبال پر کردن این شکاف از طریق استفاده از تحلیل های کمّی جهت بررسی اینکه چگونه مسائل کلیدی به آن مربوط می شوند، می باشد: جابجایی های رهنمودی WEEE (زباله تجهیزات و وسایل الکتریکی و الکترونیک) و شرایط سازمانی پذیرفته شده توسط هر ایالت عضو بر نتایج به دست آمده در آن ایالت های عضو درمورد جمع آوری این تجهیزات از خانواده ها اثر می گذارد. به صورت جزئی تر، یک تحلیل کلاسی مخفی (LCA) برای تحلیل راهبردهای مختلف مدیریت "مسئولیت گسترده تولید کننده" بر مبنای شرایط سیاست، ساختار زنجیره تامین، و بازدهی جمع آوری زباله الترونیک از خانواده ها، استفاده شده است. نتایج ارتباط قوی بین واگذاری مسئولیت و مدل سازمانی پذیرفته شده در ایالت های عضو و بازدهی مربوط به تجهیزات خانوارهای کوچک را پررنگ می کند. نتایج نشانگر نیاز به هماهنگی قوی تر "مسئولیت گسترده تولید کننده" و سیاست های زباله ای به منظور دستیابی به سطوح کافی از جمع آوری زباله های تجهیزات الکتریکی و الکترونیک، نیاز به تشریح واضح مسئولیت های هر بخش از زنجیره تامین و همچنین اهمیت "خانه های تمیز کننده" در وساطت کردن اثرات رقابت کوته نگرانه بین طرح های جمعی می باشد.
