1 Effect of a theory-driven educational intervention on the level of knowledge, attitudes, and assessment practices regarding breakthrough cancer pain (BTCP) management among medical nurses in Hong Kong

Purpose: To examine the effect of an educational intervention intended to improve medical nurses’ adherence to breakthrough cancer pain (BTCP) assessment practices and their level of knowledge, attitudes and perceived assessment practices regarding BTCP management. Methods: Nurses working in a regional hospital were recruited to this quasi-experimental study. The intervention group received a 3-h educational workshop and one session of individual clinical instruction, whilst the control group did not receive any intervention. Chart audits were performed to examine adherence to BTCP assessment practices as the primary outcome. A self-developed questionnaire was used to measure nurses’ knowledge, at- titudes and perceived assessment practices regarding BTCP management as the secondary outcomes. The chi- square or Fisher’s exact test was used to compare the rate of adherence to BTCP assessment practices between groups. A generalised estimating equation was used to compare changes in knowledge, attitudes, and perceived assessment practices between groups over time. Results: One hundred and five nurses completed the study. The chart audits revealed a significantly higher rate of adherence to BTCP assessment practices in the intervention group after the intervention (p < .05). The inter- vention group exhibited significant positive changes in scores for knowledge (β = 25.49, p < .001), attitude (β = 0.98 to 2.81, p < .01), and their perceived assessment practices (β = 1.33 to 3.14, p < .002) when compared with the control group. Conclusions: This theory-driven educational intervention significantly improved the medical nurses’ adherence to BTCP assessment practices and their level of knowledge attitudes and perceived assessment practices regarding BTCP management.

2 Improving learning in the management of gender violence: Educational impact of a training program with reflective analysis of dramatized video problems in postgraduate nurses

Background: Most gender-based violence victims who sought help in Spain did so through health services. Training on gender-based violence with active learning methodologies promotes the management of knowledge, reflection, and adaptation to change. Nurses, along with an educator, can construct knowledge with the same strategies they will use professionally. Purpose: To evaluate the knowledge, skills, and attitudes associated of postgraduate nurses on gender-based violence before and after a reflection-based training program with dramatized problem-videos. The secondary objectives were to evaluate the knowledge in the activation of protocols, skills, and attitudes in the management of women who are victims of gender-based violence, the consolidation of learning, and the applicability to the workplace. Methods: Pre-post quasi-experimental study without a control group. A specifically validated and designed in- strument was utilized to evaluate the dimensions of knowledge, skills, and attitudes when facing gender-based violence, before and after the training sessions, along with additional questions to assess if the participants possessed better tools to address gender-based violence. Results: The difference between the pre and post-tests was statistically significant for the dimensions knowledge, skills, and attitude (p < 0.05), with a smaller effect size in the dimensions skills and attitude. Also, high scores were observed in the consolidation of learning and applicability to the workplace. Conclusion: Reflection-based training with dramatized problem-videos improved the acquisition of tools neces- sary for the detection and management of gender-based violence of nurses.

3 Towards better understanding and narrowing of the science-practice gap: A practitioner-centered approach to management knowledge creation

The lack of mutual communication and collaboration between academic research and management practice, and the limited implementation of the research findings in strategic and tactical decision-making in practice settings, known as the science-practice ‘gap’, remains an essential issue in management research. We challenge the pri- mary focus on academics for the possibilities of bridging the gap by arguing that the picture remains incomplete without a closer look at the positions, perceptions, and attitudes of practicing managers toward the joint pro- duction of relevant management knowledge. Based on the inductive, grounded theory approach, we conducted a qualitative study of 47 practicing managers with different organizational and functional responsibilities across various industry sectors. Although practitioners perceived practice-engaged research design and execution, relevant management research, and benefits from complementary knowledge as enablers of fruitful science- practice collaboration, our emerging findings revealed limited trust, limited cognition, coping strategies, and heuristic information processing to be important barriers for practitioners that hamper the collaboration process. Relying on the cognitive and information processing framework and theory of the conservation of resources, we aimed to explain the antecedent of (un)successful collaboration on the practitioners’ side, thus extending our understanding of the scholarship of integration.

5 Beliefs influencing students’ career choices in Sweden and reasons for not choosing the accounting profession

This study, employing the simplified Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA), investigates student beliefs that influence their attitudes and subjective norms, leading them to not choose the accounting profession in Sweden. Questionnaires were sent electronically to first-year and second-year university students, and, after applying the exclusion criteria, the sample size comprised 228 students. The results reaffirmed the simplified TRA model and revealed that both behavioral (no personal interest in accounting, a boring profession, and higher salaries in other occupations) and normative beliefs (the influence of teachers and peers), through personal attitudes and subjective norms, influenced students’ decision to avoid the accounting profession. The findings suggest that accounting departments and business school faculties should recruit professional accountants and invite Swedish professional accounting bodies to create supportive activities that will motivate and help students learn more about the profession. Furthermore, accounting teachers should be more practical and equipped with engaging pedagogical techniques, and mandatory internships and seminars should be included in the school curriculum. It is also suggested that these implications should be positively communicated through social media.

6 Pain management in the older adult: The relationship between nurses knowledge, attitudes and nurses practice in Ireland and Jordan

Background: Research studies regarding nurses’ knowledge attitudes and practice in the older adult are limited. Furthermore, none of these studies attempted to investigate the relationship between knowledge attitudes and practice. Furthermore, little studies compared nurses’ knowledge, attitudes and practice between Eastern and Western countries. Aim: To describe the factors associated with nurses’ acute pain management practice in the context of caring for older adult patients. Method: A quantitative, correlational, comparative and cross-sectional survey approach. Data collection: Data were collected using survey questionnaire. Sample: A sample of 267 registered nurses from Ireland and Jordan (one private hospital in each country). Results: A multiple linear regression analysis revealed that nurses’ general knowledge and attitude towards pain management was associated with their pain management practice, with a regression coefficient of 0.14 (p = 0.002). However, knowledge of pain in the elderly failed to reach a statistically significant relationship with pain management practice. In regards to country and gender, Irish nurses had an average score that was 2.61 points higher than Jordanian nurses (p < 0.001), female nurses had an average score that was 0.67 points higher than male nurses (p = 0.025). The overall regression model was significant (p < 0.001) with an R2 value of 43.2%, indicating that 43.2% of the variation in scores was explained by knowledge, attitude and practice. Conclusion: More research studies combining the three concepts (knowledge, attitude and practice) are recom- mended in the area of pain management.

7 Predictors of nurses attitudes and knowledge towards pain management in Italy: A cross-sectional study in the hospital settings

Introduction: Pain is multidimensional, and as such it is the chief reason patients require urgent health care services. If inadequately assessed and untreated, pain may negatively impact on the quality of life of the patient. Pain management is an essential part of Nursing. The aim to this study is to examine the level of knowledge and attitudes with regard to pain among Italian nurses who work in clinical settings. Methods: The Ferrell and McCaffery’s Knowledge and Attitudes Survey Regarding Pain was distributed to 266 nurses employed in one specialized hospital in Rome, Italy. The staff in the survey work in three different set- tings: the intensive care unit, the sub-intensive care unit, and an ordinary ward. Descriptive statistics were employed and a logistic regression model was performed to evaluate the factors that may influence the attitude and knowledge of care providers. Results: 49.6% of the sample correctly answered items about attitudes, 47.4% about knowledge, and 36.5% about assessment. The results show that the odds ratio of developing positive attitudes towards pain was 1.76 times higher in nurses employed in the sub-intensive care unit than in other settings. There are no statistically sig- nificant associations of knowledge between setting, sex or education. Conclusions: Our survey revealed a limited overall level of knowledge and attitudes with regards to pain man- agement among nurses. Implementing specific training for health professionals, starting with academic educa- tion, is therefore a priority. Further research is needed on a larger sample of Italian nurses. 8 Judicial attitudes under shifting jurisprudence: Evidence from Brazils new drug law of 2006

This paper attempts to quantify the response of different types of appellate judges to a major shift in criminal jurisprudence on drug offenses in Brazil, which, in 2010, revoked the prohibition of conversion of prison sentences in drug offenses. Appellate judges may react to criminal reform by changing their rates of judgements that are favorable to defendants and, depending on the judge type, responses run in different directions and with variable intensity. This study offers detailed estimates of such responses and interprets them in the light of the literature on the determinants of judicial decision-making, which resorts not only on legal factors but also on the ideology, personal attributes and strategic behavior of judges. According to the Brazilian constitution, 10% of the seats in appellate courts must be filled by formerly practicing lawyers and 10% by former prosecutors, both by executive appointment. The remaining 80% are reserved for career judges. In addition to these appointments, appellate panels also rely heavily on judges sitting by designation, who acted as rapporteurs, between 2009 and 2013, in as many as 14% of all criminal appeals in the state court of São Paulo, which is the subject of the analysis. A large dataset of criminal appeals related to drug offenses and the exogenous assignment of cases allow identifying the causal effects of career backgrounds on the response of appellate judges to the shift in drug jurisprudence. Estimates of the effect of judge types on appellate case outcomes, conditional on case characteristics and judging panel-specific effects, confirm that career judges are more likely to rule in favor of defendants, in line with the shift in jurisprudence. Former prosecutors and sitting judges seem to react against the shift, by increasing their rate of rulings against defendants. Former lawyers tend to exhibit mixed behavior, possibly resulting from a combination of liberal attitudes and strategic behavior, in deference to policy preferences of the executive branch.

9 Organizational governance and prosecutorial attitudes: Regulating Chinese prosecutors through the performance evaluation mechanism

Performance evaluations shape the behavior of prosecutors in China, yet scholarship on the implementation of such evaluations is scarce. Based on documentary analysis and in-depth interviews with criminal justice officers in China, we show that the Chinese procuratorial evaluation system has been enforced from the top down, incentivizing upper-level prosecutors to pressure their subordinates to be more zealous in carrying out their functions. Highly quantitative parameters are used in the organizational governance of the procuratorial system, drawing different reactions from upper-level prosecutors versus front-line prosecutors and causing reciprocal relationship between prosecutors and other criminal justice actors. This study not only uses the latest empirical data to broaden our understanding of the details and logics of the Chinese procuratorial performance evaluation mechanism, but also stimulates the debate on organizational governance in comparative law and justice studies.
