1 Power to the people: Applying citizen science and computer vision to home mapping for rural energy access

To implement effective rural electricity access systems, it is fundamental to identify where potential consumers live. Here, we test the suitability of citizen science paired with satellite imagery and computer vision to map remote off-grid homes for electrical system design. A citizen science project called “Power to the People” was completed on the Zooniverse platform to collect home annotations in Uganda, Kenya, and Sierra Leone. Thou- sands of citizen scientists created a novel dataset of 578,010 home annotations with an average mapping speed of 7 km2/day. These data were post-processed with clustering to determine high-consensus home annotations. The raw annotations achieved a recall of 93% and precision of 49%; clustering the annotations increased precision to 69%. These were used to train a Faster R-CNN object detection model, producing detections useful as a first pass for home-level mapping with a feasible mapping rate of 42,938 km2/day. Detections achieved a precision of 67% and recall of 36%. This research shows citizen science and computer vision to be a promising pipeline for accelerated rural home-level mapping to enable energy system design.

2 Grover on KATAN: Quantum Resource Estimation

This article presents the cost analysis of mounting Grover’s key search attack on the family of KATAN block cipher. Several designs of the reversible quantum circuit of KATAN are proposed. Owing to the National Insitute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) proposal for postquantum cryptography standardization, the circuits are designed focusing on minimizing the overall depth. We observe that the reversible quantum circuits designed using and gates and T-depth one Toffoli gate give more shallow circuits. Grover oracle for KATAN is designed based on the reversible circuits, which are used further to mount Grover’s key search attack on KATAN. The designs are implemented using the software framework ProjectQ, which provides a resource estimation tool to perform an appropriate cost analysis in an automated way. While estimating the resources, NIST’s depth restrictions are also respected.

3 Computer vision for anatomical analysis of equipment in civil infrastructure projects: Theorizing the development of regression-based deep neural networks

There is high demand for heavy equipment in civil infrastructure projects and their performance is a determinant of the successful delivery of site operations. Although manufacturers provide equipment performance hand- books, additional monitoring mechanisms are required to depart from measuring performance on the sole basis of unit cost for moved materials. Vision-based tracking and pose estimation can facilitate site performance monitoring. This research develops several regression-based deep neural networks (DNNs) to monitor equipment with the aim of ensuring safety, productivity, sustainability and quality of equipment operations. Annotated image libraries are used to train and test several backbone architectures. Experimental results reveal the pre- cision of DNNs with depthwise separable convolutions and computational efficiency of DNNs with channel shuffle. This research provides scientific utility by developing a method for equipment pose estimation with the ability to detect anatomical angles and critical keypoints. The practical utility of this study is the provision of potentials to influence current practice of articulated machinery monitoring in projects.

5 ‘Going agile’: Exploring the use of project management tools in fostering psychological safety in group work within management discipline courses

While psychological safety is widely acknowledged to be a crucial factor in determining how well teams function, little attention has been paid to this phenomenon in management education and HE more broadly. This highlights an important gap, given the ‘thorny’ nature, and pervasive use, of group work. We contribute the first examination of an HE intervention to increase psycho- logical safety. Specifically, through a two-phase mixed methods approach (pre/post surveys and focus groups, student diaries), we examine the implementation of Agile project management principles in both an undergraduate and postgraduate digital marketing course (total n = 131). The findings illustrate that the intervention increased psychological safety along with team- performance, group learning, interpersonal communication and creativity, whilst also reducing the free-rider problem. The study provides three contributions. First, we extend knowledge of psychological safety by showing it can be fostered through interventions providing two core antecedents (supporting facilitation and a cohesive framework). Second, we build knowledge of psychological safety in education by evidencing a greater breadth of positive outcomes, which until now has been mostly limited to knowledge development. Third, we expand understanding of implementing group work interventions in management, providing five important considerations for educational practitioners.

6 Use and non-use of accounting information: The case of controversial projects in public and non-profit settings
استفاده و عدم استفاده از اطلاعات حسابداری: مورد پروژه های بحث برانگیز در تنظیمات عمومی و غیر انتفاعی-2021
This paper investigates whether and how accounting information is used in debates and decision- making processes about controversial projects in public sector and non-profit settings in the Netherlands and Italy. The research is based on two case studies and relies on multiple methods of qualitative data collection, including documents, interviews with key actors and media reports. The research finds a more limited extent of accounting information use than expected given the controversiality of the projects. It raises various types of explanations for this limited accounting information use, especially that ruling groups of actors supporting the project do not give room to the opposing minority for putting forward their concerns and preferences. The power position of the ruling majority thus matters in mitigating opportunities for a dialogic use of accounting in- formation leading to the decision-making about the projects. So, controversiality is a determining factor, but insufficient as an explanation for the extent to which accounting information is used. In addition, the type of accounting information use is depending on the actors’ appreciation of the project. Advocates and opponents concerning both projects were in general inclined to an ammunition type of accounting information use, whereas actors holding a neutral position used available accounting information in a more rational way.

7 The myth of workforce reduction efficiency: The performativity of accounting language

This paper draws on Austin’s conceptualization of performativity to show how the accounting strategies implemented before a workforce reduction can contribute to performing the myth of workforce reduction efficiency. To address this issue, we use both quantitative and qualitative methods. First, through quantitative analyses on a sample of 117 workforce reductions announced by 101 French listed firms from 2007 to 2012, we shed light how, by not taking accounting strategies into account in their models, prior mainstream studies may have conveyed false knowledge about improved performances after the operation and performed the workforce reduction efficiency supported by economic theories. Second, through a case study, we provide an in-depth illustration of the performativity effect of these accounting strategies and more precisely of downward earnings management, which can be considered a calculation act that contributes to performing the myth of the efficiency of these operations. Overall, this paper contributes to the workforce reduction literature by providing a critical illustration of how accounting numbers construct efficiency through the performative role given to earnings management. It also con- tributes to the critical accounting project by notably participating in the debate on the use of quantitative and mixed research methodologies in the critical accounting project.

8 Agility and system documentation in large-scale enterprise system projects: a knowledge management perspective

The growth of the agile approach usage comes with a deemphasis on formal documentation (explicit knowledge) and an increased reliance on personal interactions (tacit knowledge) for knowledge transfer. However, the sharing of tacit knowledge poses challenges. The agile approach is prone to knowledge hoarding, as well as knowledge loss from employee turnover and reassignment during periods of significant organizational changes. This study proposes a model that frames documentation and personal interactions as co-agents of system knowledge transfer. We report the preliminary confirmation of crucial antecedents along the dimensions of codification and personalization strategies to support our model. We present a set of findings on current practices, as well as a set of knowledge-sharing issues on system documentation based on three main categories. The first category incorporates system development approaches applied in large-scale enterprise systems projects. The second and the third categories comprise eight knowledge management themes, classified into the dimensions of personalization and codification for knowledge sharing and document practices. Finally, we put forward five propositions based on our findings.

9 The role and meaning of lessons learned in project knowledge management in organizations in Poland
نقش و معنای درس های آموخته شده در مدیریت دانش پروژه در سازمان ها در لهستان-2021
The aim of this article is to establish the role and meaning of lessons learned collection and application practices in project knowledge management based on an empirical research in organizations running operations in Poland. The analysis conducted for the purpose of this article included hypothesis verification by means of statistical testing performed on data gathered from an online survey distributed among project management professionals in Poland. The testing results revealed that Polish project managers and project team members present positive attitude towards lessons learned practices and that there is a statistically significant correlation between lessons learned collection and application practices and benefits realization in terms of scope, time and budget in projects in the surveyed organizations differentiated by means of sector of operations, project maturity level and organizational culture. Also, specific barriers and obstacles in learning lessons from past experience in project management have been found and correlated with lessons learned collection and application practice.

10 Towards agile knowledge management in an online organization

Effective knowledge management is a powerful driver for product and organizational growth. Knowledge management allows for the efficient creation, sharing and use of information. But it is not entirely clear what basic knowledge is involved in agile practice and how teams handle it. The main aim of the article was the theoretical and empirical analysis of the agile knowledge management approach. The principles of knowledge management in connection with agile methodology were examined in the cognitive-theory section. The methodology is based on a case study applying an observational technique within an online organization. The empirical part presents a theoretical model that describes how knowledge management is used in the agile approach. These findings can aid in the understanding of agile knowledge management practices inside an online company, which includes iterative development, knowledge management and engineering practices. The results show that agile knowledge management improved in the organizations proactive process management. The significant influence is observed on staff efficiency, economic growth, and hence on customer loyalty, which boosts corporate morale while reducing resource consumption.
