1 Hash Function Based on Controlled Alternate Quantum Walks With Memory (September 2021)
We propose a Quantum inspired Hash Function using controlled alternate quantum walks with Memory on cycles (QHFM), where the jth message bit decides whether to run quantum walk with one-step memory or to run quantum walk with two-step memory at the jth time step, and the hash value is calculated from the resulting probability distribution of the walker. Numerical simulation shows that the proposed hash function has near-ideal statistical performance and is at least on a par with the state-of-the-art hash functions based on quantum walks in terms of sensitivity of hash value to message, diffusion and confusion properties, uniform distribution property, and collision resistance property; and theoretical analysis indicates that the time and space complexity of the new scheme are not greater than those of its peers. The good performance of QHFM suggests that quantum walks that differ not only in coin operators but also in memory lengths can be combined to build good hash functions, which, in turn, enriches the construction of controlled alternate quantum walks.

2 A simplified method to account for vertical human-structure interaction
To account for vertical human-structure interaction (HSI) in the vibration serviceability analysis, the contact force between the pedestrian and the structure can be modelled as the superposition of the force induced by the pedestrian on a rigid surface and the force resulting from the mechanical interaction between the structure and the human body. For the case of large crowds, this approach leads to (time-variant) models with a very high number of degrees of freedom (DOFs). To simplify analysis, this paper investigates the performance of an equivalent single-degree-of-freedom approach whereby the effect of HSI is translated into an effective natural frequency and modal damping ratio for each mode of the supporting structure. First, the numerical study con- siders a footbridge structure that is modelled as a simply-supported beam for which only the fundamental vertical bending mode is taken into account. For a relevant range of structure and crowd parameters, the comparison is made between the structural response predicted by the simplified model and the more accurate reference model that accounts for all DOFs of the coupled crowd-structure model. Where the simplified model is found to underestimate the structural response, although to a limited extent, this is compensated for by intro- ducing a correction factor for the effective damping ratio. Second, the performance of the simplified method is evaluated through the application on a real footbridge. The results show that the simplified method allows for a good and mildly conservative estimate of the structural acceleration response that is within 10–20% of the predictions of the reference crowd-structure model.

3 Brain activity during walking in older adults: Implications for compensatory versus dysfunctional accounts
A prominent trend in the functional brain imaging literature is that older adults exhibit increased brain activity compared to young adults to perform a given task. This phenomenon has been extensively stud- ied for cognitive tasks, with the field converging on interpretations described in two alternative accounts. One account interprets over-activation in older adults as reflecting neural dysfunction (increased brain activity – indicates poorer performance), whereas another interprets it as neural compensation (in- creased brain activity - supports better performance). Here we review studies that have recorded brain activity and walking measurements in older adults, and we categorize their findings as reflecting either neural dysfunction or neural compensation. Based on this synthesis, we recommend including multiple task difficulty levels in future work to help differentiate if and when compensation fails as the locomo- tion task becomes more difficult. Using multiple task difficulty levels with neuroimaging will lead to a more advanced understanding of how age-related changes in locomotor brain activity fit with existing accounts of brain aging and support the development of targeted neural rehabilitation techniques.

4 Finding the shortest path in a familiar environment: A comparison between describing and walking a path after accounting for the role of individual factors
Finding the shortest path to a destination is a refined navigation ability little explored as yet in familiar envi- ronments. The present study examined this ability when walking or describing the path, and how performance relates to individual differences. Sixty-seven undergraduates familiar with the area around their campus were asked to find the shortest path to a destination by walking there or describing it in writing. Several visuospatial tasks and questionnaires were administered. It emerged that shortest path finding performance was supported by familiarity and sense of direction. After accounting for these individual factors, participants performed better when walking than when describing a path. Overall, the results showed that retrieving spatial knowledge about familiar environments relates to individual differences and recall condition, walking a path being easier than describing it.

5 Bias reduction in the population size estimation of large data sets
Estimation of the population size of large data sets and hard to reach populations can be a significant problem. For example, in the military, manpower is limited and the manual processing of large data sets can be time consuming. In addition, accessing the full population of data may be restricted by factors such as cost, time, and safety. Four new population size estimators are proposed, as extensions of existing methods, and their performances are compared in terms of bias with two existing methods in the big data literature. These would be particularly beneficial in the context of time-critical decisions or actions. The comparison is based on a simulation study and the application to five real network data sets (Twitter, LiveJournal, Pokec, Youtube, Wikipedia Talk). Whilst no single estimator (out of the four proposed) generates the most accurate estimates overall, the proposed estimators are shown to produce more accurate population size estimates for small sample sizes, but in some cases show more variability than existing estimators in the literature.

6 On testing pseudorandom generators via statistical tests based on the arcsine law
Testing the quality of pseudorandom number generators is an important issue. Security requirements become more and more demanding, weaknesses in this matter are simply not acceptable. There is a need for an in-depth analysis of statistical tests – one has to be sure that rejecting/accepting a generator as good is not a result of errors in computations or approximations. In this paper we propose a second level statistical test based on the arcsine law for random walks. We provide upper bounds for the approximation of the arcsine distribution, what allows us to perform a detailed error analysis of the proposed test.

7 Dynamic texture analysis with diffusion in networks
Dynamic texture is a field of research that has gained considerable interest from computer vision community due to the explosive growth of multimedia databases. In addition, dynamic texture is present in a wide range of videos, which makes it very important in expert systems based on videos such as medical systems, traffic monitoring systems, forest fire detection system, among others. In this paper, a new method for dynamic texture characterization based on diffusion in directed networks is proposed. The dynamic texture is modeled as a directed network. The method consists in the analysis of the dynamic of this network after a series of graph cut transformations based on the edge weights. For each network transformation, the activity for each vertex is estimated. The activity is the relative frequency that one vertex is visited by random walks in balance. Then, texture descriptor is constructed by concatenating the activity histograms. The main contributions of this paper are the use of directed network modeling and diffusion in network to dynamic texture characterization. These tend to provide better performance in dynamic textures classification. Experiments with rotation and interference of the motion pattern were conducted in order to demonstrate the robustness of the method. The proposed approach is compared to other dynamic texture methods on two very well known dynamictexture database and on traffic condition classification, and outperform in most of the cases.

8 CNAVER: A Content and Network-based Academic VEnue Recommender system
The phenomenon of rapidly developing academic venues poses a significant challenge for researchers: how to recognize the ones that are not only in accordance with one’s scholarly interests but also of high significance? Often, even a high-quality paper is rejected because of a mismatch between the research area of the paper and the scope of the journal. Recommending appropriate scholarly venues to researchers empowers them to recognize and partake in important academic conferences and assists them in getting published in impactful journals. A venue recommendation system becomes helpful in this scenario, particularly when exploring a new field or when further choices are required. We propose CNAVER: A Content and Network-based Academic VEnue Recommender system. It provides an integrated framework employing a rank-based fusion of paper-paper peer network (PPPN) model and venue-venue peer network (VVPN) model. It only requires the title and abstract of a paper to provide venue recommendations, thus assisting researchers even at the earliest stage of paper writing. It also addresses cold start issues such as the involvement of an inexperienced researcher and a novel venue along with the problems of data sparsity, diversity, and stability. Experiments on the DBLP dataset exhibit that our proposed approach outperforms several state-of-the-art methods in terms of precision, nDCG, MRR, accuracy, F − measuremacro, average venue quality, diversity, and stability.

9 Keep walking? Geographical proximity, religion, and relationship banking
We investigate the geographical proximity of firms to their relationship banks. We find that Islamic banks are more remote to their borrowers. We also find that the probability for a firm to connect to a bank substantially decreases in distance, but that the choice along bank characteristics determines how potent distance is in its impact. If the bank in the vicinity is an Islamic bank, distance plays a more muted role, especially in cities with a high conservative party vote and higher trust in religious institutions. Overall, these findings suggest that the presence of banks with certain characteristics in the vicinity may determine the within-firm and across-firm configurations of observable firm-bank connections. 10 A novel image steganography technique based on quantum substitution boxes
Substitution boxes play an essential role in designing secure cryptosystems. With the evolution of quantum technologies, current data security mechanisms may be broken due to their construction based on mathematical computation. Quantum walks, a universal quantum computational model, play an essential role in designing quantum algorithms. We utilize the benefits of quantum walks to present a novel technique for constructing substitution boxes (S-boxes) based on quantum walks (QWs). The performance of the presented QWs S-box technique is evaluated by S-box evaluation criteria, and our results prove that the constructed S-box has vital qualities for viable applications in security purposes. Furthermore, a new technique for image steganography is constructed. The proposed technique is an integrated mechanism between classical data hiding and quantum walks to achieve better security for the embedded data. The embedding and extraction procedures are controlled by QWs S-box. The inclusion of cryptographic QWs S-box ensures the security of both embedding and extraction phases. At the extraction phase, only the stego image and the secret values are needed for constructing the secret data. Experimental results demonstrate that the presented technique has a high-security, high embedding capacity and good visual quality.
