1 Rural and agri-entrepreneurial networks: A qualitative case study
The Queijo Serra da Estrela, DOP is the oldest Portuguese cheese recognized internationally. The objective of this paper is to analyse a rural, agri-entrepreneurial network created by a young, female, craft cheese producer located in an area of low population density in the inland central region of Portugal. For data collection, several qualitative semi-structured phone and face-to-face interviews were held with the partners of the network. This paper contributes by helping to understand how a rural agricultural network in the specific sector of a Protected Denomination of Origin (PDO) product works and what its motives, success factors and benefits are. The results indicate that trust, confidence and regular payments are essential to make this network viable and create added value for business in a traditional sector threatened by climate changes, the age of shepherds and importation of exotic breeds of sheep. Some theoretical and practice contributions will be also presented.

2 The liability of rurality and new venture viability
This paper integrates imprinting theory and insights from rural/spatial entrepreneurship research to develop the concept “liability of rurality”. In the paper I argue why increasing rurality of geographical space should be considered a penalty for entrepreneurs. Further, I propose how rurality – as a liability - may influence the emergence, survival and growth prospects of new ventures. This includes a theoretical integration between the liability of rurality and the universal liabilities of newness and smallness. The paper ends with a research agenda discussing how the liability of rurality can add to and rejuvenate spatial and rural entrepreneurship research.

3 The impact of entrepreneurs environmental analysis strategy on organizational performance
The purpose of this paper is to assess the impact of entrepreneurial innovation strategies in environmental analysis and its impact on the performance of rural SMEs in developing countries, particularly in Kenya. The paper argues that improvements in rural SMEs through sustainable environmental analysis strategies can boost the performance of small firms in rural areas. A sample of 272 rural enterprises in Kenya was used as a framework. Partial least squares regression and correlation models are used for content analysis. The results show a non significant influence of environmental instability on the performance of small firms in rural areas. However, by incorporating entrepreneurial invention strategies into environmental scanning, the results indicate a positive impact on the performance of rural SMEs. Entrepreneurs need to be aware of the importance of environmental innovation strategies to cope with disturbances and dynamism of the environment underpinning the performance of rural SMEs. The study suggests that policymakers need to create a conducive business environment through entrepreneurship training and business incubation programs for rural SMEs. The results provide in- formation on the environmental analysis strategy and innovation management theory in defining the future of small business reengineering in rural areas.

4 A conceptual model of entrepreneurial competencies and their impacts on rural youths intention to launch SMEs
The present research aimed to first specify entrepreneurial competencies required for launching small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) among rural youth. Then, weights were assigned to the components by key experts of rural entrepreneurship using a fuzzy analytic hierarchy process. Finally, the impact of entrepreneurial competencies was assessed on rural youths intention to launch SMEs. The research population in the survey part was composed of the rural youth of Kangavar County in Kermanshah province, Iran (N = 6207). The sample size was estimated to be 361 individuals who were taken by the proportionate stratified random sampling technique. The research instrument was a questionnaire whose face and content validity was confirmed by a panel of experts and its reliability was confirmed through a pilot study. Pairwise comparisons by experts showed that strategic, communicative, psychological and opportunistic competences were the most to least important factors underpinning the rural youths intention to establish SMEs. Also, among entrepreneurial competencies, five components including entrepreneurial vigilance, networking ability, individualism, tolerance of ambiguity, and market analysis accounted for 39.2 percent of the variance of the rural youths intention to launch SMEs. It is recommended to empower rural youth in capabilities such as planning to initiate a business and the analysis of markets in order to strengthen their strategic competencies.

5 Mentoring entrepreneurship in a rural territory – A qualitative exploration of an entrepreneurship program for rural areas
This study aims to understand the importance of an entrepreneurship program for a rural territory. For the empirical development of this study, primary data was collected through semi-structured interviews and documents/reports developed by the program. The interviews were conducted with the skilled worker of the institutions that were involved in the development of the EMER-n program and were handled with the support of the NVIVO software. The results show that the EMER-n program, by involving local actors (higher education institutions, business associations and local development associations), allowed the creation of a network that led to an entrepreneurial ecosystem in a rural territory. This entrepreneurial ecosystem has provided entrepreneurs with support both in setting up and validating the business, as well as in supporting established firms to become more competitive and to explore other markets. This study provides empirical evidence on the importance of entrepreneurship programs in rural territories. In addition, this study demonstrates how the interaction of local actors can help foster business creation and contribute to an entrepreneurial ecosystem.

6 Rural entrepreneurship and migration
Using data for U.S. rural counties we examine the how the age profile of migrants from 1990 to 2000 impacts business start-ups in 2000. Depending on the industry classification, we find that younger and older migrants tend to have the largest impacts on rural business start-ups. The impacts tend to be larger for older migrants than younger. This result, which is consistent with the findings of the meta analysis of Akgün et al. (2011), has strong policy implications: from an entrepreneurial perspective, the loss of younger adults is likely out-weighed by the “retirement migration” of older persons. Rural communities should not overlook the in-migration of people who are either pre-retirement age or retirees when pursuing entrepreneurship strategies.
