1 Internet of Things-enabled Passive Contact Tracing in Smart Cities
Contact tracing has been proven an essential practice during pandemic outbreaks and is a critical non-pharmaceutical intervention to reduce mortality rates. While traditional con- tact tracing approaches are gradually being replaced by peer-to-peer smartphone-based systems, the new applications tend to ignore the Internet-of-Things (IoT) ecosystem that is steadily growing in smart city environments. This work presents a contact tracing frame- work that logs smart space users’ co-existence using IoT devices as reference anchors. The design is non-intrusive as it relies on passive wireless interactions between each user’s carried equipment (e.g., smartphone, wearable, proximity card) with an IoT device by uti- lizing received signal strength indicators (RSSI). The proposed framework can log the iden- tities for the interacting pair, their estimated distance, and the overlapping time duration. Also, we propose a machine learning-based infection risk classification method to char- acterize each interaction that relies on RSSI-based attributes and contact details. Finally, the proposed contact tracing framework’s performance is evaluated through a real-world case study of actual wireless interactions between users and IoT devices through Bluetooth Low Energy advertising. The results demonstrate the system’s capability to accurately cap- ture contact between mobile users and assess their infection risk provided adequate model training over time. © 2021 Elsevier B.V. 2 iRestroom : A smart restroom cyberinfrastructure for elderly people
According to a report by UN and WHO, by 2030 the number of senior people (age over 65) is projected to grow up to 1.4 billion, and which is nearly 16.5% of the global population. Seniors who live alone must have their health state closely monitored to avoid unexpected events (such as a fall). This study explains the underlying principles, methodology, and research that went into developing the concept, as well as the need for and scopes of a restroom cyberinfrastructure system, that we call as iRestroom to assess the frailty of elderly people for them to live a comfortable, independent, and secure life at home. The proposed restroom idea is based on the required situations, which are determined by user study, socio-cultural and technological trends, and user requirements. The iRestroom is designed as a multi-sensory place with interconnected devices where carriers of older persons can access interactive material and services throughout their everyday activities. The prototype is then tested at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. A Nave Bayes classifier is utilized to anticipate the locations of the sensors, which serves to provide a constantly updated reference for the data originating from numerous sensors and devices installed in different locations throughout the restroom. A small sample of pilot data was obtained, as well as pertinent web data. The Institutional Review Board (IRB) has approved all the methods.

3 DQRA: Deep Quantum Routing Agent for Entanglement Routing in Quantum Networks
Quantum routing plays a key role in the development of the next-generation network system. In particular, an entangled routing path can be constructed with the help of quantum entanglement and swapping among particles (e.g., photons) associated with nodes in the network. From another side of computing, machine learning has achieved numerous breakthrough successes in various application domains, including networking. Despite its advantages and capabilities, machine learning is not as much utilized in quantum networking as in other areas. To bridge this gap, in this article, we propose a novel quantum routing model for quantum networks that employs machine learning architectures to construct the routing path for the maximum number of demands (source–destination pairs) within a time window. Specifically, we present a deep reinforcement routing scheme that is called Deep Quantum Routing Agent (DQRA). In short, DQRA utilizes an empirically designed deep neural network that observes the current network states to accommodate the network’s demands, which are then connected by a qubit-preserved shortest path algorithm. The training process of DQRA is guided by a reward function that aims toward maximizing the number of accommodated requests in each routing window. Our experiment study shows that, on average, DQRA is able to maintain a rate of successfully routed requests at above 80% in a qubit-limited grid network and approximately 60% in extreme conditions, i.e., each node can be repeater exactly once in a window. Furthermore, we show that the model complexity and the computational time of DQRA are polynomial in terms of the sizes of the quantum networks.

4 High-accuracy in the classification of butchery cut marks and crocodile tooth marks using machine learning methods and computer vision algorithms
Some researchers using traditional taphonomic criteria (groove shape and presence/absence of microstriations) have cast some doubts about the potential equifinality presented by crocodile tooth marks and stone tool butchery cut marks. Other researchers have argued that multivariate methods can efficiently separate both types of marks. Differentiating both taphonomic agents is crucial for determining the earliest evidence of carcass processing by hominins. Here, we use an updated machine learning approach (discarding artificially bootstrapping the original imbalanced samples) to show that microscopic features shaped as categorical variables, corresponding to intrinsic properties of mark structure, can accurately discriminate both types of bone modifications. We also implement new deep-learning methods that objectively achieve the highest accuracy in differentiating cut marks from crocodile tooth scores (99% of testing sets). The present study shows that there are precise ways of differentiating both taphonomic agents, and this invites taphonomists to apply them to controversial paleontological and archaeological specimens.

5 Predicting social media engagement with computer vision: An examination of food marketing on Instagram
In a crowded social media marketplace, restaurants often try to stand out by showcasing elaborate “Insta- grammable” foods. Using an image classification machine learning algorithm (Google Vision AI) on restaurants’ Instagram posts, this study analyzes how the visual characteristics of product offerings (i.e., their food) relate to social media engagement. Results demonstrate that food images that are more confidently evaluated by Google Vision AI (a proxy for food typicality) are positively associated with engagement (likes and comments). A follow- up experiment shows that exposure to typical-appearing foods elevates positive affect, suggesting they are easier to mentally process, which drives engagement. Therefore, contrary to conventional social media practices and food industry trends, the more typical a food appears, the more social media engagement it receives. Using Google Vision AI to identify what product offerings receive engagement presents an accessible method for marketers to understand their industry and inform their social media marketing strategies.

6 Graph Kernels Encoding Features of All Subgraphs by Quantum Superposition
Graph kernels are often used in bioinformatics and network applications to measure the similarity between graphs; therefore, they may be used to construct efficient graph classifiers. Many graph kernels have been developed thus far, but to the best of our knowledge there is no existing graph kernel that uses some features explicitly extracted from all subgraphs to measure similarity. We propose a novel graph kernel that applies a quantum computer to measure the similarity obtained from all subgraphs by fully exploiting the power of quantum superposition to encode every subgraph into a feature of particular form. For the construction of the quantum kernel, we develop an efficient protocol that clears the index information of the subgraphs encoded in the quantum state. We also prove that the quantum computer requires less query complexity to construct the feature vector than the classical sampler used to approximate the same vector. A detailed numerical simulation of a bioinformatics problem is presented to demonstrate that, in many cases, the proposed quantum kernel achieves better classification accuracy than existing graph kernels.

7 Disintegration testing augmented by computer Vision technology
Oral solid dosage forms, specifically immediate release tablets, are prevalent in the pharmaceutical industry. Disintegration testing is often the first step of commercialization and large-scale production of these dosage forms. Current disintegration testing in the pharmaceutical industry, according to United States Pharmacopeia (USP) chapter 〈701〉, only gives information about the duration of the tablet disintegration process. This infor- mation is subjective, variable, and prone to human error due to manual or physical data collection methods via the human eye or contact disks. To lessen the data integrity risk associated with this process, efforts have been made to automate the analysis of the disintegration process using digital lens and other imaging technologies. This would provide a non-invasive method to quantitatively determine disintegration time through computer algorithms. The main challenges associated with developing such a system involve visualization of tablet pieces through cloudy and turbid liquid. The Computer Vision for Disintegration (CVD) system has been developed to be used along with traditional pharmaceutical disintegration testing devices to monitor tablet pieces and distinguish them from the surrounding liquid. The software written for CVD utilizes data captured by cameras or other lenses then uses mobile SSD and CNN, with an OpenCV and FRCNN machine learning model, to analyze and interpret the data. This technology is capable of consistently identifying tablets with ≥ 99.6% accuracy. Not only is the data produced by CVD more reliable, but it opens the possibility of a deeper understanding of disintegration rates and mechanisms in addition to duration.

8 High-Performance Reservoir Computing With Fluctuations in Linear Networks
Reservoir computing has emerged as a powerful machine learning paradigm for harvesting nontrivial information processing out of disordered physical systems driven by sequential inputs. To this end, the system observables must become nonlinear functions of the input history. We show that encoding the input to quantum or classical fluctuations of a network of interacting harmonic oscillators can lead to a high performance comparable to that of a standard echo state network in several nonlinear benchmark tasks. This equivalence in performance holds even with a linear Hamiltonian and a readout linear in the system observables. Furthermore, we find that the performance of the network of harmonic oscillators in nonlinear tasks is robust to errors both in input and reservoir observables caused by external noise. For any reservoir computing system with a linear readout, the magnitude of trained weights can either amplify or suppress noise added to reservoir observables. We use this general result to explain why the oscillators are robust to noise and why having precise control over reservoir memory is important for noise robustness in general. Our results pave the way toward reservoir computing harnessing fluctuations in disordered linear systems.

9 Non-destructive and contactless estimation of chlorophyll and ammonia contents in packaged fresh-cut rocket leaves by a Computer Vision System
Computer Vision Systems (CVS) offer a non-destructive and contactless tool to assign visual quality level to fruit and vegetables and to estimate some of their internal characteristics. The innovative CVS described in this paper exploits the combination of image processing techniques and machine learning models (Random Forests) to assess the visual quality and predict the internal traits on unpackaged and packaged rocket leaves. Its perfor- mance did not depend on the cultivation system (traditional soil or soilless). The same CVS, exploiting its ma- chine learning components, was able to build effective models for either the classification problem (visual quality level assignment) and the regression problems (estimation of senescence indicators such as chlorophyll and ammonia contents) just by changing the training data. The experiments showed a negligible performance loss on packaged products (Pearson’s linear correlation coefficient of 0.84 for chlorophyll and 0.91 for ammonia) with respect to unpackaged ones (0.86 for chlorophyll and 0.92 for ammonia). Thus, the non-destructive and con- tactless CVS represents a valid alternative to destructive, expensive and time-consuming analyses in the lab and can be effectively and extensively used along the whole supply chain, even on packaged products that cannot be analyzed using traditional tools.

10 Computer vision for anatomical analysis of equipment in civil infrastructure projects: Theorizing the development of regression-based deep neural networks
There is high demand for heavy equipment in civil infrastructure projects and their performance is a determinant of the successful delivery of site operations. Although manufacturers provide equipment performance hand- books, additional monitoring mechanisms are required to depart from measuring performance on the sole basis of unit cost for moved materials. Vision-based tracking and pose estimation can facilitate site performance monitoring. This research develops several regression-based deep neural networks (DNNs) to monitor equipment with the aim of ensuring safety, productivity, sustainability and quality of equipment operations. Annotated image libraries are used to train and test several backbone architectures. Experimental results reveal the pre- cision of DNNs with depthwise separable convolutions and computational efficiency of DNNs with channel shuffle. This research provides scientific utility by developing a method for equipment pose estimation with the ability to detect anatomical angles and critical keypoints. The practical utility of this study is the provision of potentials to influence current practice of articulated machinery monitoring in projects.
